Cybernews reported that researchers found a passwordless, 631 GB database containing an estimated 4 billion records on May 19, 2025; the instance was closed the next day. That is a count of records, not a verified count of people. The database’s owner, how long it was exposed before discovery, and whether any information was misused remain unknown.
What happened?
Cybernews said its researchers, working with cybersecurity researcher Bob Dyachenko, discovered the exposed database on May 19, 2025, and that it was closed on May 20. The reports do not establish how long it had been reachable before it was found. Cybernews described the database as passwordless and estimated its contents at roughly 4 billion records.
This is best described as an exposed database or data leak. The reporting does not establish who assembled it or the circumstances in which its information was collected, so it does not support a definitive account of how the database came to exist.
Does 4 billion records mean 4 billion people?
No. The figure is Cybernews’s estimate of records, not unique people. Collections may overlap, and the reports do not establish how many individuals were represented or how many records were accurate. TechRadar repeated the roughly 4 billion estimate on June 6, 2025, but that does not turn it into a verified user count.

What information did the database reportedly contain?
Cybernews described a mix of personal, financial, and platform-related information. Its collection names and contents do not amount to a complete independent audit, so some categories are reported or inferred rather than confirmed for every record.

These are reported counts for named collections, not a tally of distinct people. Cybernews did not establish whether records in one collection duplicated records in another.

Who owned the database, and why was it compiled?
The owner was not identified. Cybernews said attribution information and ownership headers were absent, and its reporting did not establish a responsible company, government, or individual.
The mix of data led Cybernews’s research team to suggest possible surveillance, profiling, or data enrichment. The team wrote that the diversity of information “suggests that this was likely a centralized aggregation point,” potentially maintained for those purposes. That is a hypothesis about possible purpose, not a confirmed finding about who maintained the database or why.

What could the exposure mean for people?
The combination of identifying and financial information could plausibly be used in phishing, fraud, blackmail, identity theft, or attempts to misuse accounts. Those are potential risks described in the reporting, not documented outcomes: the reports do not confirm particular victims or resulting crimes.
Cybernews did not say that passwords were present. Nor did it identify a list of affected people, so there is no basis in these reports to determine whether a particular person’s information was included. The unknown owner and lack of an identified notification channel also mean the reporting provides no direct route for individuals to check with the database operator.
