Later research showed how weaknesses in path checks and Windows audio parsing could extend the attack chain to remote code execution (RCE). These were distinct vulnerabilities with different effects and, in some cases, different interaction requirements—not one flaw that always gave an attacker control of a computer.
What is CVE-2023-23397?
CVE-2023-23397 was an Outlook reminder sound-path vulnerability. An attacker could put a specially crafted path in a reminder; when the Outlook client processed it, it could try to connect to an attacker-controlled server using SMB. That connection could expose the user’s NTLM credentials. The recipient did not have to open the message or click a link for this original attack.
Microsoft addressed the vulnerability in March 2023 after it had been exploited in targeted attacks. Akamai’s account says the issue had been used for roughly a year by the time it was reported. Its primary effect was credential coercion and exposure—not direct code execution. An exposed credential can create further risk, but that is different from the original flaw executing an attacker’s code on the device.
How did the Outlook reminder sound vulnerability lead to zero-click RCE?
The chain developed in stages. Microsoft’s initial mitigation classified the sound-file path with Windows’ MapUrlToZone function to distinguish remote paths. Akamai then found path-parsing cases that could make a remote path appear local, undermining that check. A separate Windows audio parsing vulnerability could provide a route from processing the sound file to code execution. The RCE result depended on combining relevant weaknesses; it was not the direct effect of CVE-2023-23397 alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Vulnerability | Role in the sequence | Effect and interaction | Fix timing reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2023-23397 | Original Outlook reminder sound-path flaw | Could coerce an outbound SMB connection and expose NTLM credentials; no user interaction was required for the described attack. | Microsoft addressed it in March 2023. |
| CVE-2023-29324 | Bypass involving the initial path classification mitigation | Path parsing could make a remote path appear local. Akamai assigned a CVSS base score of 6.5; this bypass was not established as having the same interaction requirements as the original exploit. | Microsoft addressed it in May 2023. |
| CVE-2023-35384 | A later path-type confusion bypass | SecurityWeek reported that Microsoft described this issue as requiring interaction, so it should not be treated as having the original attack’s no-interaction profile. | Microsoft addressed it in August 2023. |
| CVE-2023-36710 | Windows Audio Compression Manager sound-parsing companion flaw | SecurityWeek’s December 19, 2023 summary of Akamai’s research described an integer overflow in mapWavePrepareHeader. Combined with the relevant Outlook or instant-messaging attack surface, researchers reported RCE without user interaction. |
Discussed in Akamai’s December 2023 research; the cited account describes the relevant vulnerabilities as fixed but does not give a separate date for this row. |
The distinction between credential exposure and RCE matters: an outbound authentication attempt can disclose credentials without running attacker-controlled code, while RCE means code can execute on the target system. Akamai’s December 2023 assessment said the relevant chain vulnerabilities had been fixed, but also noted that the broader Outlook attack surface remained. Akamai could not rule out bypass of an Exchange mitigation that dropped messages containing PidLidReminderFileParameter. That was a contemporaneous assessment, not confirmation of current Exchange behavior.
Was CVE-2023-35628 part of the same chain?
It was a later, related discovery—not the same two-vulnerability RCE chain. In April 2024, Akamai disclosed CVE-2023-35628, a memory-corruption flaw in CreateUri path parsing. Akamai reported that a crafted Outlook email could trigger it without user interaction and that it could provide zero-click RCE on its own. The earlier RCE primitive, by contrast, relied on combining vulnerabilities. Akamai said Windows updates released in December 2023 addressed CVE-2023-35628.

Can an Outlook email exploit you without clicking?
Some of the attacks described could be triggered when a vulnerable Outlook client processed a crafted message or reminder, without the recipient opening it or clicking a link. That is what “zero-click” means here. It does not mean every vulnerability in the sequence had identical requirements: Microsoft described CVE-2023-35384 as requiring interaction, and matching interaction requirements were not established for every other bypass.

The historical fix dates identify when Microsoft addressed reported issues; they do not establish whether a particular computer or server is protected now. Installed product, version, and update state matter. Administrators should verify the applicable Microsoft security update and build guidance for each affected Windows and Outlook installation, and review Microsoft’s official Exchange guidance for their deployment.
