When Classic Outlook shows “This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it” for a PDF, the usual causes include a disabled Outlook preview handler, mismatched Outlook and Acrobat bitness, or a competing preview component. Start by checking Outlook’s Trust Center setting, then try the other fixes below.

These fixes apply mainly to Classic Outlook for Windows. New Outlook uses a different attachment-preview system, so its troubleshooting steps are different.

1. Turn on Outlook’s PDF Preview Handler

Classic Outlook has a Trust Center setting for attachment previewers. It is separate from your Windows default PDF app. Microsoft’s Outlook and File Explorer preview troubleshooting confirms this setting path.

  1. Open Classic Outlook.
  2. Select File > Options.
  3. Choose Trust Center, then select Trust Center Settings.
  4. Open Attachment Handling.
  5. Select Attachment and Document Previewers.
  6. Make sure PDF Preview Handler is checked.
  7. Make sure Turn off Attachment Preview is not checked.
  8. Select OK on each dialog and restart Outlook.

Open an email with a PDF attachment and select the attachment once. If Outlook still displays the missing-previewer message, continue with the next fix.

Important: this menu path is for Classic Outlook. You will not find it in New Outlook.

2. Make Outlook and Acrobat the same bitness

Microsoft identifies mismatched architectures as a cause of the missing PDF previewer error. Classic Outlook and Acrobat Reader should both be 32-bit or both be 64-bit. See Microsoft’s PDF preview error guidance; that article was last updated March 18, 2022.

Check Outlook

  1. In Outlook, go to File > Office Account.
  2. Select About Outlook.
  3. Read the bitness shown in the About Outlook window. It will say 32-bit or 64-bit.

Check Acrobat Reader

  1. Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
  2. Select Help > About Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  3. Check whether it says 32-bit or 64-bit.

If the values do not match, uninstall the current Acrobat or Reader installation and install the matching architecture. For example, if Outlook is 64-bit, install the 64-bit Acrobat or Reader package. Restart Windows or at least restart Outlook after reinstalling.

Do not confuse Windows’ architecture with the applications’ architecture. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit Outlook and 32-bit Reader. The relevant match is between Outlook and the PDF viewer.

3. Turn off PowerToys’ competing PDF preview

Microsoft identifies Microsoft PowerToys as a program that can override the PDF preview setting. If PowerToys is installed, disable its PDF option temporarily.

  1. Open PowerToys from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Select File Explorer Add-ons.
  3. Turn off Enable PDF (.pdf) preview.
  4. Close and restart Outlook.
  5. If necessary, restart File Explorer as well.

You can restart File Explorer from Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.

The PowerToys option is specifically called Enable PDF (.pdf) preview. It is not the same setting as Outlook’s PDF Preview Handler checkbox.

4. Re-register Acrobat as the default PDF handler

Changing the default app in Windows does not always repair Acrobat’s file-association registration. Re-registering it from Acrobat can restore the connection used by Outlook.

  1. Close Outlook completely.
  2. Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
  3. Select Menu > Preferences.
  4. Choose General.
  5. Select Select as Default PDF Handler.
  6. Restart Outlook and test the attachment.

This is a reported Microsoft Q&A workaround, not a guaranteed Microsoft Support fix. It helps some installations but not all. If the option is unavailable or the preview still fails, check the bitness and PowerToys settings above before reinstalling software. See the Microsoft Q&A report.

5. Enable Acrobat’s Windows Explorer PDF component

Acrobat and Acrobat Reader include a PDF Shell component for Windows Explorer previews. Adobe says this feature is off by default. Although it primarily controls File Explorer thumbnails and previews, enabling it can repair a missing or disabled Acrobat preview component on some systems.

  3. Open General.
  4. Check Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart Outlook and test the PDF again.

This setting is not the same as Outlook’s Trust Center PDF Preview Handler setting. Enable both when you are troubleshooting Classic Outlook.

If Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer is missing, update Acrobat or Reader through Help > Check for updates, then look for the option again. See Adobe’s instructions for enabling PDF thumbnail previews.

Additional checks for File Explorer previews

If PDFs also fail in the Windows File Explorer preview pane, check these settings:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View > Options.
  3. Open the View tab.
  4. Check Show preview handlers in preview pane.
  5. Clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  6. Select Apply and OK.

These settings affect File Explorer. They do not replace Outlook’s own PDF Preview Handler setting.

If the problem occurs only in New Outlook

Do not spend time looking for the Classic Outlook Trust Center path if you are using New Outlook. New Outlook has a separate attachment-preview implementation.

Long or deeply nested cache paths have been suggested as a possible cause, but this is a community diagnosis rather than a confirmed Microsoft root cause. Avoid the reported workaround of removing permissions from this folder or making it read-only: it can stop the Open action from working, may only help temporarily, and can return after an update.

For a New Outlook-only failure, use Help > Feedback in New Outlook and include whether the attachment works in Outlook on the web and whether the downloaded file is corrupt. The reported symptoms and cache details are discussed in the Microsoft Q&A thread.

Acrobat > Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) > clear Enable Protected Mode at startup

Restart Acrobat and test the preview. If this changes the result, re-enable Protected Mode immediately after testing. Disabling this security feature is not a recommended permanent fix.

Best order to try the fixes

  1. Enable PDF Preview Handler in Classic Outlook.
  2. Check that Outlook and Acrobat have matching 32-bit or 64-bit architectures.
  3. Disable PowerToys’ Enable PDF (.pdf) preview option.
  4. Re-register Acrobat as the default PDF handler.
  5. Enable Acrobat’s PDF thumbnail preview component and update Acrobat if the option is missing.

FAQ

Why does Outlook say there is no PDF previewer installed?

In Classic Outlook, the PDF Preview Handler may be disabled, Acrobat and Outlook may have mismatched 32-bit and 64-bit installations, or PowerToys may be overriding the PDF preview component. The message does not necessarily mean that Acrobat is absent.

Does setting Adobe Acrobat as the Windows default fix Outlook PDF previews?

It can repair file associations, but it is not guaranteed. Also check Outlook’s PDF Preview Handler setting, application bitness, and PowerToys’ PDF preview option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is the PDF Preview Handler setting in New Outlook?

It is not available in New Outlook. File > Options > Trust Center > Attachment Handling is a Classic Outlook setting. New Outlook uses a separate attachment-preview system.

Should I disable Acrobat Protected Mode permanently?

No. Disabling Protected Mode is only a diagnostic test suggested in community troubleshooting. Re-enable it after testing.

Why does the PDF work in Outlook on the web but not New Outlook?

That pattern points to a New Outlook client-specific preview or attachment-download problem rather than a general PDF-file problem. Use Help > Feedback in New Outlook and report the comparison.

The Bottom Line

For Classic Outlook, first enable PDF Preview Handler, then verify that Outlook and Acrobat use the same bitness. If the error remains, disable PowerToys’ Enable PDF (.pdf) preview option, re-register Acrobat, and enable its Windows Explorer PDF component. If only New Outlook fails, use Help > Feedback rather than searching for the Classic Outlook Trust Center setting.
