The study results are model-specific, not a reliable ranking of the brands or of newer devices. Choose based on the form factor and features you will use, and treat sleep-stage results as estimates.
How reliable are Oura and Fitbit sleep readings?
Neither wearable is a substitute for polysomnography, or PSG, the clinical sleep test used as a reference in validation research. A wearable’s sleep score and stage breakdown can help you follow patterns over time, but they should not be treated as a diagnosis or a definitive account of a particular night.
What the 2023 comparison found
A 2023 prospective multicenter study assessed 11 consumer sleep technologies against PSG in 75 participants. Oura Ring 3 showed fair agreement with PSG for sleep-stage classification, while Fitbit Sense 2 showed moderate agreement. Performance varied by sleep stage and participant characteristics. What a later study can—and cannot—tell you
A 2024 validation study compared Oura Ring, Fitbit, and Apple Watch with PSG during one inpatient night. It enrolled 35 healthy adults aged 20–50. That defined sample and single-night design cannot establish a brand-wide winner, and the available summary does not provide enough model-specific results to rank Oura against Fitbit. For either brand, focus on trends rather than treating one reading as ground truth. If you are concerned about a sleep or health problem, use a wearable as a prompt to seek appropriate medical advice, not as a diagnostic tool.

What health tracking does Oura Ring offer?
Oura Ring 4 illustrates the company’s current ring approach: it uses optical sensors for heart rate and heart-rate variability, a temperature sensor that tracks variations, an accelerometer, and red and infrared LEDs for nighttime blood-oxygen sensing. Oura says Ring 4 with active membership includes detailed sleep analysis and other health features. What health tracking does Fitbit offer?

Ring or wrist: which form factor fits your routine?
