In Sarah Matthews’s two-month review for Expert Reviews, she praised its comfort and unobtrusive design, but also found activity detection imperfect. Its UK price and ongoing membership make it a considered purchase, especially for Ring 3 and Ring 4 owners, whose tracking features are largely shared.
What the Oura Ring 5 is—and who it suits
Ring 5 is a screen-free wearable focused on health, recovery, readiness and sleep insights in the Oura app. It is not a smartwatch replacement: it has no display for notifications or live workout feedback, and it does not include built-in GPS, ECG or fall alerts, according to Expert Reviews’ review, updated 21 September 2026.
Matthews wore the ring for two months. She compared its heart-rate readings with a separate monitor and its sleep tracking with a Garmin smartwatch; her comments about comfort and tracking are her review observations, not independent laboratory findings. She found the low-profile form factor appealing, while noting that the device’s activity detection can misidentify movement and that live tracking must be stopped manually.

The review says the Ring 5’s base price is £50 above Ring 4’s launch base price, with premium finishes also £50 more at launch. That is a comparison of launch prices, not a current Ring 4 price comparison. The charging case is described as holding a month’s worth of charge and is most relevant to frequent off-grid travel, rather than essential for everyday charging.
Does Oura Ring 5 require a subscription?
The ring can show basic readiness, sleep and activity scores without membership, according to the review. Oura membership is needed for the full set of health insights and data points. The reported UK price is £5.99 monthly or £70 annually; check Oura’s current UK membership terms before purchase.
That recurring fee changes the total cost of ownership. Compare the ring’s hardware price plus membership over the period you expect to use it, rather than judging value by the ring price alone.

What does the ring track?
Expert Reviews lists heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), blood oxygen, VO2 Max, activity, calories, steps, temperature, respiratory rate and sleep among the measures and estimates. The app organizes insights around heart health, stress, recovery, sleep and readiness.

The review also reports live activity tracking, the ability to enter activities later, automatic activity detection, Strava data transfer, lab-result uploads, expanded menopause tracking and the ability to add birth-control information. How sleep tracking works
Oura says its sleep tracking combines photoplethysmography (PPG), temperature sensors and motion sensors. Its company explanation describes using heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, body-temperature trends and movement to produce sleep insights. Oura’s article names sleep-staging validation references from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (2024), the National University of Singapore (2022 and 2023), the University of Tokyo (2024) and MDPI Sensors (2021). The article’s list alone does not establish the studies’ results, so it is not a basis for quoting a specific accuracy percentage or claiming clinical-grade measurement.
Battery life, fit and charging
Expert Reviews describes the ring as titanium, weighing 2–2.69g, and 40% smaller than its predecessor. It reports an IP68 rating and eight sizes, from 6 to 13—one fewer size than Ring 4, which could make fit harder for people with very thin fingers. Treat these as specifications reported in the September 2026 review, and verify current manufacturer specifications before buying.
The review reports a claimed six to nine days of battery life, depending on ring size, and an 80-minute full charge. A size-specific USB-C charger and dock are included, according to the article. The battery figure is a manufacturer claim as reported by the reviewer, not a guarantee of runtime for every person or usage pattern.

Where Ring 5 falls short for workouts
For running or cycling pace and distance, the review says Ring 5 relies on the phone for location; the ring itself has no built-in GPS. It also lacks live activity feedback, ECG and fall safety alerts that some smartwatches offer.
Matthews reports that automatic detection sometimes registered phantom activity. She also found it inconvenient to remember to stop a live-tracked workout. If you want a device for workout pacing, on-device guidance, or safety functions, those omissions matter more than the ring’s discreet design.

The review says Ring 5’s tracking features are also available on Ring 3 and Ring 4. Its reasons to consider upgrading are the smaller size, claimed tracking-accuracy improvements and marginally longer battery life. The reviewer’s heart-rate comparison is an individual observation; the review does not independently establish the size of an accuracy gain.

For an existing owner whose current ring fits and provides the insights they need, shared app features make replacement harder to justify on tracking alone. A new buyer has a different calculation: weigh fit, comfort and screen-free health tracking against the upfront cost, membership and lack of smartwatch functions.
Verdict
Oura Ring 5 is a strong fit for someone who values a comfortable, unobtrusive ring and broad sleep and health insights more than smartwatch features. Its compromises are clear: substantial hardware and membership costs, imperfect automatic activity detection, phone-dependent location and no ECG or fall alerts. It is less compelling as an upgrade from Ring 3 or Ring 4 unless the smaller size or reported hardware improvements solve a specific need.
