Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is an overnight rigid-lens treatment that temporarily reshapes the cornea, so some people can see clearly during the day without wearing lenses. Conventional contact lenses correct vision while they are on the eye. Ortho-K may suit someone who values daytime freedom from lenses and can manage nightly lens care; daytime contacts may suit someone who prefers not to sleep in lenses. Only an eye-care professional can determine which option fits your eyes and prescription.
How Ortho-K and conventional contacts work
Orthokeratology: overnight wear, daytime effect
Ortho-K uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses, usually worn while sleeping. The lenses temporarily change the shape of the cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—to reduce myopia while the lenses are out. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes Ortho-K as a lens-fitting procedure that temporarily improves the eye’s ability to focus; it is not permanent correction. FDA: Types of Contact Lenses
The effect can vary in strength and duration. Continued wear on the schedule prescribed by the clinician is needed to maintain it, and vision may fluctuate if the schedule is not followed. FDA: EUCLID Systems Ortho-K device record

Conventional contacts: correction while worn
Conventional contacts correct vision while they sit on the eye. They include different materials, replacement cycles, and approved wear schedules, so “regular contacts” is not a single uniform option. Many are worn during waking hours, but the exact schedule and care routine depend on the prescribed lens. FDA: Types of Contact Lenses

Ortho-K vs. conventional contact lenses
| Consideration | Orthokeratology | Conventional contact lenses |
|---|---|---|
| Typical wear | Usually overnight, then removed in the morning; follow the clinician’s prescribed schedule. FDA | Often worn during waking hours; the prescribed lens determines its schedule. FDA |
| When it corrects vision | Temporarily changes corneal curvature, with an effect while the lenses are out. FDA | Corrects vision while the lenses are worn. FDA |
| Daytime without lenses | Possible for some wearers; effect and duration vary. | Not the usual result when the lenses are removed. |
| Routine | Overnight insertion and removal, lens care, prescribed maintenance schedule, and professional follow-up. FDA FDA device record | Wear, cleaning, disinfection, and replacement depend on lens type and practitioner instructions. FDA |
| Overnight exposure | Overnight wear is part of the treatment and carries infection risk. American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), 2022 | Daily-wear lenses should not be slept in; use only according to the product’s approved schedule. FDA |
| Fitting | Requires specialist fitting and careful adherence to the lens-care directions. In the U.S., practitioners must be trained and certified to fit overnight Ortho-K lenses. FDA | Requires an appropriate prescription, fit, and care instructions from an eye-care professional. National Eye Institute (NEI) |
What to consider when choosing
Ortho-K may fit your routine if daytime lens-free vision matters
It may appeal if you want to be without lenses during daytime activities and can reliably handle overnight insertion, removal, cleaning, and follow-up. These are practical considerations based on the wear schedule, not a determination that the treatment is medically suitable for you.
Daytime contacts may fit if you do not want overnight wear
Wearing contacts only while you need vision correction during the day may better match your preference if you do not want to sleep in lenses. The specific lens still has its own wear, cleaning, and replacement instructions, which should come from your practitioner and the product labeling.

Prescription and eye health require an examination
Suitability depends on individual factors, including eye health and prescription. AAO’s 2022 Preferred Practice Pattern describes FDA approval for temporary Ortho-K reduction of myopia up to 6.00 diopters in eyes with astigmatism up to 1.75 diopters. These are stated device and indication limits—not a prediction of results or a universal eligibility rule. Confirm current labeling for the specific device with an eye-care professional. AAO, Refractive Errors Preferred Practice Pattern
Overnight wear and contact-lens safety
Sleeping in contact lenses is a meaningful safety distinction. FDA warns against sleeping in daily-wear lenses, and clinical guidance describes greater microbial keratitis risk with overnight than with daily wear. Ortho-K involves overnight wear, so its risks and care requirements should be discussed with the fitting professional. The available guidance does not establish an individual’s probability of infection or provide a personalized risk comparison between options. FDA AAO, 2022

- For better hard contact lens removal. The silicone suction cups make it easier to remove hard contact lenses without having to touch them with your fingers
- Each silicone succer is individually packed in a storage cylinder with a screw cap. For easy hardlens removal, moisten the tip of the succer & eye with your wetting solution
- Economy pack with 4 pieces, contains 1 contact lens sucker each in the colours: yellow, blue, pink and transparent. Always have a spare on hand, also ideal for travel
- Removing hard lenses with your fingertip is difficult and can lead to the lens breaking. JB White Silicone succers are easy to use and facilitate the removal
- Scope of delivery, 4x JB White contact lens suction cups with storage container. For dimensionally stable hard monthly, six-monthly and annual lenses -NOT for soft lenses-
Follow the prescribed lens-care routine and all care-product labeling, including instructions for the case. Do not substitute a different cleaning product or schedule without professional guidance. FDA
Questions to ask at a fitting
- Which lens options and care systems are appropriate for my eyes and prescription?
- What insertion, removal, cleaning, and replacement routine would I need to follow?
- What follow-up visits are required for this option?
- What should I do if I notice redness, pain, irritation, or fluctuating vision?
- What alternatives fit my daily routine if this option is not appropriate?
Ortho-K fitting and contact-lens selection both require professional assessment; the NEI advises discussing Ortho-K with an eye doctor. NEI: Other Types of Contact Lenses

In the United States, FDA says practitioners must be trained and certified before fitting overnight Ortho-K lenses. The FDA describes the procedure as temporary corneal reshaping for refractive correction. That U.S. regulatory context should not be assumed to describe approval or practice rules in other countries.
