Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Lux and Discovery are two planned AMD- and HPE-powered systems for U.S. scientific research. Lux is the nearer-term cluster, designed for AI training and distributed inference; Discovery is the longer-term flagship for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI, and is planned as the successor to Frontier. Their published schedules differ: Lux was targeted for deployment in early 2026, while Discovery delivery is planned for 2028 and AMD has said user operations are expected in 2029. Those are plans, not confirmation that either system is online.

What are Discovery and Lux?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and ORNL announced the systems on October 27, 2025. They are separate supercomputing projects intended to support AI-enabled scientific computing and research priorities such as energy, fusion and fission, materials, quantum science, advanced manufacturing, medicine, biology, cybersecurity and the electric grid.

The systems are being built around different time horizons and workloads. Lux is intended to provide near-term AI capacity. Discovery is the planned next-generation flagship, combining traditional HPC with AI and succeeding ORNL’s Frontier system.

How do the systems compare?

Category Lux Discovery
Role Near-term AI cluster for AI training and distributed inference. Long-term flagship for HPC and AI; planned successor to Frontier.
Planned schedule Deployment at ORNL was planned for early 2026. That target has passed; the available ORNL information, updated March 5, 2026, does not establish whether Lux is now deployed or operating. Delivery is planned for 2028. AMD has said user operations are expected in 2029.
Compute and servers AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and AMD EPYC CPUs in HPE ProLiant Compute XD685 servers. HPE Cray Supercomputing GX5000 platform with next-generation AMD EPYC processors, codenamed “Venice,” and AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs.
Networking and storage AMD Pensando networking; no separate storage product is identified in the cited system description. HPE Cray Storage Systems K3000, described as a DAOS-based storage system.
Partnership model Developed with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) as a co-development partner, alongside ORNL, DOE, AMD and HPE. Led by HPE with DOE, ORNL and AMD.

What hardware powers Discovery?

Processors, accelerators and platform

Discovery is planned around HPE’s Cray Supercomputing GX5000 platform. Its compute is to combine next-generation AMD EPYC CPUs, known by the codename Venice, with AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs. These are components of a planned national-laboratory system, not consumer products offered for individual purchase.

Storage and rack design

ORNL’s system description names HPE Cray Storage Systems K3000, a DAOS-based storage system. ServeTheHome’s technical reporting describes K3000 as HPE’s productized DAOS storage system. The same reporting characterizes GX5000 as designed for higher compute density and heterogeneous computing, with liquid cooling and rack pumps in redundant sidecars. Those are descriptions of the platform’s implementation, not independently measured performance results.

What powers Lux?

Lux is planned to use AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and AMD EPYC CPUs in HPE ProLiant Compute XD685 servers, with AMD Pensando networking. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is a co-development partner. This combination supports Lux’s stated focus on AI training and distributed inference; it should not be confused with the GX5000-based architecture planned for Discovery.

Why is DOE building two AMD supercomputers?

The projects address different needs rather than simply duplicating one another. Lux is intended to bring AI-focused capacity to ORNL sooner, while Discovery is a longer-term HPC-and-AI flagship planned to replace Frontier. Together, they are meant to support a broad range of scientific workloads, from AI-enabled research to energy, materials, medicine and grid-related work.

The announcement also reflects a public-private partnership among DOE, ORNL and industry. AMD said the fully deployed Discovery and Lux systems represent a combined $1 billion investment of public and private funding. That is the combined investment figure AMD announced, not a published per-system cost breakdown.

When will the systems be online?

Lux: early 2026 target

Lux was planned for deployment at ORNL in early 2026. ORNL’s information was updated on March 5, 2026, but the cited material does not confirm that deployment was completed or give an actual date when users began running work. Because the target period has passed, it is more accurate to describe early 2026 as the announced plan than to call Lux operational.

Discovery: delivery in 2028, operations expected in 2029

Discovery’s delivery is planned for 2028. AMD has separately said user operations are expected in 2029. Delivery and user operations are different milestones, and both dates remain forward-looking plans rather than guarantees.

What performance has been announced?

The cited official announcements do not provide a measured FLOPS figure, benchmark score or independently verified claim that either system is a specified number of times faster than another. ORNL’s announcement describes Discovery as offering “significantly greater performance,” but that qualitative characterization should not be treated as a quantified comparison. Until measured results are published, claims about exact speed or ranking are not established by these announcements.

AMD cautions that availability, timing, functionality and expected benefits may change. The published schedules and descriptions should therefore be read as plans for systems under development.
