Choose OCI File Storage when you need a managed NFSv3 file share for workloads running in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and that protocol meets your clients’ needs. Consider an appropriate NetApp ONTAP implementation when your requirements call for NFS and SMB, an existing ONTAP operating model, or a choice of on-premises, virtualized, and cloud deployments. They are different kinds of products, so compare the specific service or platform you would deploy—not the names as though they were equivalent storage services.

What are you comparing?

OCI File Storage is a managed cloud file service

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) File Storage provides shared network file access. Compute instances connect through mount targets, and exports associate file systems with those endpoints. Oracle documents support for NFSv3 and Network Lock Manager (NLM) file locking. Capacity grows without customers pre-provisioning a storage pool. Oracle identifies shared file access, big data and analytics, media processing, and content management as use cases. See Oracle’s File Storage overview and its File Storage documentation.

ONTAP is a storage platform family

NetApp ONTAP is software for managing storage, not a single cloud file service or appliance. NetApp documents deployments on AFF, AFX, ASA, and FAS systems; ONTAP Select on supported commodity hardware; and cloud offerings including Cloud Volumes ONTAP, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Azure NetApp Files, and Google Cloud NetApp Volumes. Capabilities, operating responsibilities, and commercial terms depend on which implementation you select. NetApp describes the options in its ONTAP platform overview and ONTAP documentation.

How the options compare

Decision area OCI File Storage NetApp ONTAP
What it is Managed OCI network file service. Storage management software and platform family; the deployment must be specified.
File protocols NFSv3; Oracle also documents NLM locking. NFS and SMB are supported in ONTAP NAS management; available features depend on implementation and configuration.
Deployment choices OCI service, configured with OCI resources, network access, exports, and client mounts. NetApp systems, supported hardware/software deployments, and several cloud forms.
Performance evidence Oracle publishes mount-target read-throughput tiers and their test conditions; these are not a head-to-head benchmark. A comparable figure for a specific ONTAP implementation is not stated in the cited platform documentation.
Cost comparison Depends on region, capacity, snapshots, performance choice, networking, and data movement; there is no single price established here. Depends on deployment, capacity and performance configuration, cloud infrastructure where applicable, licensing, support, and administration.

Protocol details are in Oracle’s overview and NetApp’s NAS management documentation. Platform choices are described in the NetApp platform overview.

Which workloads favor each option?

OCI File Storage is a candidate for OCI-based shared NFS data

Look more closely at OCI File Storage if compute runs in OCI, multiple clients need shared file access, and NFSv3 fits the application and operating systems. A managed service can suit teams that prefer OCI to operate the storage service rather than pre-provision and manage a storage pool. Oracle lists analytics, media processing, and content-management workflows among possible uses, but suitability still depends on the application’s protocol, latency, and throughput requirements.

ONTAP is a candidate when protocol breadth or platform continuity matters

Evaluate a specific ONTAP implementation when clients need NFS and SMB access, when file and block use cases may be consolidated on a suitable platform, or when the organization already operates ONTAP and wants a consistent administration approach. Its range of on-premises, virtualized, and cloud forms may also matter when data and applications span those environments. These are reasons to investigate ONTAP, not guarantees that every ONTAP feature is present in every cloud service. Verify the selected implementation and release in NetApp’s NAS management documentation and the platform overview.

Will clients and applications work with it?

Start with protocol compatibility rather than a product feature checklist. OCI File Storage is specifically documented as NFSv3; do not assume standard OCI File Storage provides SMB. ONTAP’s NAS management supports NFS and SMB, and NetApp documents provisioning a volume for both protocols. That does not mean every ONTAP-based cloud service supports every protocol combination.

For each workload, confirm the client operating systems and protocol versions, identity services, permissions, locking behavior, and whether Windows and Linux clients must access the same dataset. If the application needs block or object access as well as files, include that in the requirement: OCI File Storage is a file service, while ONTAP capabilities depend on the specific deployment. NetApp’s dual-protocol provisioning workflow is a reference for an ONTAP configuration, not proof that the same setup applies to every ONTAP offering.

Who operates the storage, and where does it live?

OCI service responsibilities

Oracle operates File Storage as an OCI service. Customers still configure the OCI resources, network reachability, exports, identity and access policy, and client mounts. Oracle recommends placing the mount target in the same availability domain as the compute instances for optimal performance. A file system resides in its selected availability domain; placing data elsewhere requires copying it or using another data-movement process. Consult the OCI overview when planning placement and access.

ONTAP responsibilities depend on the implementation

Operating a customer-managed array or software deployment differs materially from consuming a cloud service built on ONTAP. For the particular option under consideration, establish who handles upgrades, capacity planning, network design, monitoring, and recovery operations. The platform overview helps distinguish deployment forms; it does not make their operating models interchangeable.

How should you compare performance and scale?

Oracle documents maximum read-throughput tiers for OCI mount targets: 1 Gbps for Standard, and 20, 40, or 80 Gbps for High Performance. These are published maxima for reads with block sizes of at least 1 MiB and sufficient concurrency and queue depth. High Performance tiers also have capacity entitlements. Oracle’s mount-target documentation describes the tiers; its 2024 performance guide describes scaling by changing mount-target performance and adding mount targets. The guide gives an example of 80 Gbps per high-performance mount target and 640 Gbps aggregate across eight targets; that is an example, not a guaranteed workload result.

These figures cannot establish that OCI File Storage is faster than ONTAP. A fair comparison requires naming the ONTAP implementation and testing both options against the same workload. Benchmark representative file sizes, metadata intensity, client counts, read/write mix, concurrency, and cache behavior. Measure latency and sustained throughput against the application’s service level, and include failure and recovery scenarios rather than testing only steady-state transfers.

How do snapshots and recovery differ?

OCI File Storage

OCI File Storage supports consistent point-in-time snapshots with copy-on-write behavior, policy-based scheduling, and encryption at rest. Oracle meters snapshot usage against differentiated snapshot data. Oracle also documents cloning and replication workflows; validate the supported topology for your configuration and whether its recovery point objective (RPO), recovery time objective (RTO), and cross-region requirements meet your plan. See the snapshot documentation and the broader File Storage documentation.

ONTAP

ONTAP documentation covers data protection and disaster recovery as part of the platform’s management capabilities, and NetApp’s provisioning workflow can add SnapMirror protection. Availability and exact behavior depend on the chosen system or cloud implementation. Compare the recovery objectives, retention requirements, and runbooks for the actual configurations; the word “snapshot” alone does not establish equivalent protection. Relevant references include the ONTAP documentation and NetApp’s provisioning workflow.

How should you compare total cost?

There is not enough information to call either option universally cheaper. For OCI, build a regional estimate that accounts for capacity, snapshots, mount-target performance choice, networking, and data movement. For ONTAP, identify the deployment first, then account for capacity and performance configuration, cloud infrastructure if applicable, licensing, support, and administration. Compare like-for-like capacity and service levels, and include migration, protection, operating labor, and transfer needs—not just the storage line item. Oracle’s mount-target documentation, service overview, and NetApp’s platform overview describe the factors that shape these estimates.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Write down the access contract. Record required protocols and versions, clients, identity model, locking behavior, and whether one dataset must be shared across operating systems.
  2. Map placement constraints. Identify where compute and data must reside, latency limits, data-residency needs, and any dependencies on OCI, on-premises infrastructure, or another cloud.
  3. Choose the operating model. Decide whether the team wants an OCI-managed service or can take responsibility for the specific ONTAP platform and its operations.
  4. Set measurable service targets. Define capacity growth, workload mix, concurrency, metadata demand, throughput, latency, RPO, and RTO before sizing.
  5. Test and price the actual designs. Benchmark representative application behavior, then compare regional costs and implementation and operating effort for the named service and ONTAP deployment.
