OCI File Storage is managed, shared NFSv3 storage that scales capacity automatically. Before migrating, compare the billable capacity—including retained snapshot data and any replica—with performance measured for your own workload and client layout. Oracle publishes a list rate, but a reliable cost or speed estimate depends on your target region, protection plan, file mix, concurrency, and network placement.
What Oracle Cloud File Storage is—and what it is not
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) File Storage is a managed NFSv3 service for shared-file workloads. Unlike fixed-capacity storage that requires you to provision a pool in advance, its capacity scales automatically as data is stored. Compare it with systems that provide the same shared-file access pattern; OCI Block Volume, Object Storage, and File Storage with Lustre are separate services with different characteristics.
Oracle says a file system cannot be moved to another availability domain or region. A change of location therefore requires copying or otherwise transferring the data, rather than relocating the existing file system. See Oracle’s Overview of File Storage.
How to estimate the monthly cost
Start with the published rate, not a promised bill
Oracle’s price list shows $0.39318 per gigabyte of storage capacity per month for OCI File Storage, SKU B89057. This is a published list figure, not a universal quote: validate the applicable region, currency, contract terms, and current pricing. Oracle directs customers to its OCI Cost Estimator and service price information for a more granular estimate.

Use metered utilization for capacity planning
Oracle identifies meteredBytes as the authoritative utilization measure for charges. It updates hourly, and changes to stored data can take up to an hour to appear. The measured amount includes data and metadata, so it may not match an instantaneous du result or a simple count of files. Details are in Oracle’s File System Usage and Metering.
Include snapshots and replicas
Snapshots initially share existing blocks with the file system. Additional snapshot usage is metered for differentiated data, so the number of snapshots alone does not determine their storage cost; the amount of changed data retained matters. Replication meters both source and target file systems, which Oracle says are priced at the same rate. Inter-region replication may also incur applicable network costs. Check Oracle’s metering documentation and replication documentation.

For a useful estimate, specify the target region and currency, average and peak stored capacity, expected growth, snapshot cadence and retention, expected change rate, whether you need a replica and where it will live, and any transfer or network costs. Without those inputs, a precise monthly total cannot be established.
How to compare performance for your workload
Account for concurrency, network, and locality
Observed performance depends on parallelism, client and instance network bandwidth, mount-target design, and where the clients, mount targets, and file system are placed. Oracle says multiple threads, clients, and mount targets can help, particularly when work is spread across independent parts of a file system; larger compute instances generally provide more network bandwidth. Oracle recommends keeping clients, mount targets, and the file system in the same availability domain where possible to minimize latency. See the File Storage FAQ and service overview.

Interpret Oracle’s mount-target guidance carefully
Oracle’s FAQ reports a limit of about 600 MB/s read or write per mount target, attributed to OCI VNIC limitations. For bandwidth-heavy workloads on file systems above 10 TB, it suggests considering multiple mount targets. These are Oracle’s documented guidance—not guaranteed results for a particular tenancy, region, instance type, protocol behavior, or workload. Validate the design under representative conditions.
Measure the work your applications actually do
Throughput alone is not a complete comparison for shared files. File sizes, metadata-operation mix, concurrency, client compute shapes, mount-target layout, latency, and throughput can all affect application behavior. OCI File Storage metrics expose throughput, IOPS, and latency; Oracle says the service emits one raw data point per minute to Monitoring. Use the File System Metrics documentation to identify available measurements.

What to plan for migration and cutover
Choose a transfer method and test it
Since file systems cannot be relocated between regions or availability domains, plan a data copy. Oracle identifies NFS-compatible copy tools and FastConnect as options for large initial transfers and data-mobility workflows. Its snapshot guidance recommends the File Storage Parallel File Toolkit’s partar and parcp tools for parallel movement; it also mentions rsync or regular tar for other operating systems. Confirm operating-system support and test permissions, metadata, and application consistency in a pilot. Refer to the service overview and Managing Snapshots.
Separate snapshots from migration
Snapshots are consistent point-in-time views, use copy-on-write, and are scoped to an entire file system. They can support rollback and data protection, but they do not transfer an on-premises file system into OCI. Plan an actual initial copy separately. See Oracle’s snapshot documentation.

Plan the final sync and write freeze
OCI replication copies data between OCI file systems; it cannot be used to migrate data from on premises into OCI. If the final destination must match the source exactly, Oracle’s replication transfer guidance says to stop writes to the source and delete its exports. Schedule the final synchronization and write-freeze window, then validate the copied data and application before switching readers and writers. See File System Replication and Using Replication for Data Transfer.
