Fortnite’s best FPS settings depend on whether your priority is maximum frame rate, a stable competitive image, or fewer crashes. For most PCs, the strongest starting point is Fullscreen, VSync Off, Fortnite’s current Performance rendering mode, 100% 3D Resolution, and low texture and mesh settings.

Apply the settings below, restart Fortnite when prompted, then use the in-game FPS counter to check whether frame times are stable. A high but inconsistent FPS number usually feels worse than a lower, steady result.

How to open Fortnite’s graphics settings

From Fortnite’s main menu, press Esc, select the gear icon, and open Video. Epic also describes this route as Main Menu → Settings → Video.

Change the settings below in order. Apply the changes and restart Fortnite if the game requests it, particularly after changing Rendering Mode.

Recommended Fortnite settings for higher FPS

Setting Recommended value Why
Window Mode Fullscreen Minimizes display overhead and input latency.
Resolution Your monitor’s default resolution; 1920×1080 is common for competitive play Maintains a clear image without rendering more pixels than necessary.
VSync Off Reduces latency. Turn it back on only if you specifically prefer tear-free output.
Rendering Mode Performance Reduces CPU/GPU load and memory use.
Frame Rate Limit Unlimited Lets the system render as many frames as it can. Match the monitor’s refresh rate if tearing occurs.
View Distance Near Reduces the amount of distant geometry that must be processed.
3D Resolution 100% Preserves image clarity. Reduce it in 10-percentage-point steps only if FPS remains too low.
Textures Low Reduces video-memory use.
Meshes Low Reduces geometry detail and rendering workload.

Epic’s current Performance setting is described as using DirectX 12 while disabling most rendering features to reduce CPU/GPU load and memory usage. Older advice that calls Performance Mode a DX11 or “legacy” mode is no longer a reliable description of the current setting.

Advanced Graphics settings

Scroll to Advanced Graphics and make these changes:

  • Show FPS: Enabled — useful for checking whether a change actually improves performance.
  • NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency: On + Boost — use this if the PC has an NVIDIA GPU. Epic describes Reflex as reducing GPU latency. It is not an AMD or Intel setting.

Do not confuse NVIDIA Reflex with NVIDIA Control Panel settings. Reflex is configured inside Fortnite; Control Panel options apply only to NVIDIA graphics cards and are not universal FPS requirements.

Performance Mode label: check what your client shows

Epic’s newer guide calls the setting Performance. An Epic troubleshooting page uses the longer label Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity. These may reflect different versions or presentations of the Fortnite interface, not two separately confirmed rendering modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you see the longer label, use this route:

  1. Open Fortnite.
  2. Click the menu icon and open Display options.
  3. Set Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.
  4. Click Apply and restart Fortnite.

Choosing a sensible FPS limit

Start with Unlimited if the system remains stable. Watch for tearing, temperature spikes, or large fluctuations in frame rate. If tearing is distracting, set Frame Rate Limit to the monitor’s default refresh rate instead.

For example, a 144 Hz display can use a 144 FPS cap if Unlimited produces tearing. The best cap is not necessarily the largest number the PC can briefly reach; a stable limit can produce more consistent frame delivery.

Do not lower 3D Resolution immediately

Fortnite’s current troubleshooting baseline is 3D Resolution: 100%, and the current Performance guide also starts at 100%. Keep it there initially. If FPS is still insufficient, reduce the value by 10 percentage points at a time—90%, then 80%, and so on—and test after each change.

This approach makes the trade-off visible. Lower 3D Resolution can improve FPS, but it also makes distant players, structures, and textures look softer. Lowering every setting at once makes it difficult to identify which change solved the problem.

Use the Low preset when the game is unstable

If Fortnite has graphics problems or you are unsure which setting is causing them, use Epic’s troubleshooting baseline:

  1. Open Main Menu → Settings → Video.
  2. Set Quality Presets to Low.
  3. Set 3D Resolution to 100%.
  4. Apply the settings and test a match.
  5. Raise individual settings gradually until you find the best stable balance.

This is more useful than copying a high-end PC configuration to a low-end system. Increase one option at a time and monitor FPS, stutter, image quality, and temperatures.

Reduce Fortnite’s storage footprint

High-resolution textures consume disk space and can increase storage and memory demands. To remove them:

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Find Fortnite, click the three dots, and select Options.
  3. Uncheck Use High Resolution Textures.
  4. Apply the change and allow the launcher to update the installation.

Epic says this saves more than 14 GB and can reduce the installation to approximately 17 GB when using Performance Mode. This is a storage option, not a guaranteed FPS setting.

If Fortnite keeps reverting your settings

A read-only GameUserSettings.ini file can prevent Fortnite from saving graphics changes or switching Performance Mode. Fix it as follows:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter %localappdata% and press Enter.
  3. Open FortniteGame → Saved → Config → WindowsClient.
  4. Right-click GameUserSettings.ini and select Properties.
  5. Clear the Read-only checkbox, select Apply, and click OK.

Restart Fortnite and set the graphics options again. The equivalent full path is C:Users[username]AppDataLocalFortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient.

Fix crashes, freezes, or a black screen from DirectX 12

If changing to Performance causes crashes, freezing, or a black screen, Epic documents a launcher command-line workaround. In the Epic Games Launcher:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down and expand Fortnite.
  3. Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
  4. Enter exactly:
-d3d12 -es31
  1. Launch Fortnite.

Do not substitute -FeatureLevelES31, -FeatureLevelD3D12, or -dx12 and present them as Epic’s verified current syntax. The documented command for this procedure is -d3d12 -es31.

Make sure Fortnite uses the dedicated GPU

On a laptop or multi-GPU desktop, Fortnite may use integrated graphics instead of the high-performance GPU.

NVIDIA

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Go to Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings.
  3. Select Fortnite.
  4. Set Preferred graphics processor to the high-performance NVIDIA processor.

AMD

  1. Open Radeon Settings.
  2. Open Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings.
  3. Select Fortnite.
  4. Set it to High Performance.

A dedicated GPU is not mandatory for Performance Mode, according to Epic, although it can provide a smoother experience.

Other causes of poor FPS and stuttering

Update graphics drivers

Outdated NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel drivers can cause poor performance and graphics problems even when the in-game settings are correct. Install the current driver for the GPU, then restart Windows and test Fortnite again.

Close resource-heavy background programs

Browsers with many tabs, recording software, overlays, launchers, and hardware-monitoring tools can consume CPU, GPU, RAM, or disk resources. Close anything unnecessary before testing FPS. Disable one overlay at a time rather than changing several variables together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check heat and airflow

If FPS is acceptable at first but degrades after several hours, overheating is a plausible cause. Clean blocked vents, remove dust, and make sure the laptop or desktop has adequate airflow. Thermal throttling can reduce performance without any Fortnite setting being wrong.

Verify the installation

Corrupt or incomplete game files can cause crashes, missing graphics, and unstable behavior:

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher → Library.
  2. Find Fortnite and click the three dots, or right-click the game.
  3. Select Manage → Verify.
  4. Wait for verification to finish, then click Launch.

Fix NVIDIA fullscreen crashes

If Fortnite crashes or freezes specifically in fullscreen on an NVIDIA system, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Adjust desktop size and position. Select the display, set Scaling mode to Full-screen, and set Perform scaling on to GPU.

Black bars in competitive modes

Black bars at the sides of the screen in Ranked, tournaments, or similar competitive modes may be expected. Epic says these modes are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Side bars in those modes are therefore not automatically evidence of a damaged installation or incorrect graphics driver.

FAQ

What are the best Fortnite settings for FPS on PC?

Use Fullscreen, VSync Off, the current Performance rendering mode, View Distance Near, Textures Low, Meshes Low, and 3D Resolution at 100% to start. Use Unlimited for the frame limit unless you experience tearing; then match the monitor’s refresh rate.

Is Fortnite Performance Mode DX11 or DX12?

Epic’s current April 30, 2026 guide describes the Performance setting as using DirectX 12. Older descriptions that call it DX11 or a legacy mode are outdated or incomplete.

Should I lower Fortnite 3D Resolution for more FPS?

Keep 3D Resolution at 100% initially. If FPS is still too low, reduce it in 10-percentage-point steps and test after each change. Lower values improve performance at the cost of image sharpness.

Why do my Fortnite graphics settings reset after I restart?

The GameUserSettings.ini file may be read-only. Open %localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient, open the file’s Properties, clear Read-only, and apply the change.

How do I remove Fortnite high-resolution textures?

In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, use Fortnite’s three-dot menu, choose Options, and uncheck Use High Resolution Textures. Epic says this saves more than 14 GB and reduces the Performance Mode installation to approximately 17 GB.

What should I do if Fortnite crashes after switching rendering modes?

In Epic Games Launcher, open Settings, expand Fortnite, enable Additional Command Line Arguments, enter -d3d12 -es31, and launch the game. You can also verify Fortnite from Library → Fortnite → Manage → Verify.

The Bottom Line

Start with Fortnite’s current Performance rendering mode, Fullscreen, VSync Off, low textures and meshes, View Distance Near, and 100% 3D Resolution. Tune downward only when testing shows you need more FPS. If the game ignores your settings, check GameUserSettings.ini; if it crashes, use Epic’s documented -d3d12 -es31 command and verify the installation.
