Optical and stereo RCA are not two versions of the same cable: optical carries digital audio, while the familiar red-and-white RCA pair carries analog left and right channels. Neither automatically sounds better. The right choice depends on the ports and audio formats your devices support, and on which component you want to convert digital audio to analog.
First, identify which RCA connection you mean
“RCA” describes a connector style, not one signal type. A red-and-white pair is typically stereo analog audio: one plug carries the left channel and the other the right. A single RCA-style jack may instead carry digital coaxial S/PDIF. Those connections are not interchangeable just because both use RCA-shaped plugs. Sony distinguishes optical from digital coaxial, and Philips describes S/PDIF connections.
How optical, stereo RCA, and digital coaxial differ
| Connection | Signal carried | Typical connection | Where digital-to-analog conversion happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optical/TOSLINK | Digital audio bitstream sent as light | Optical output to optical input | In the receiving device’s DAC |
| Stereo RCA | Analog left and right audio | Red/white outputs to matching analog inputs | Before the signal reaches the receiving analog input |
| Digital coaxial S/PDIF | Digital electrical audio signal | Usually one RCA-style digital jack to a matching digital input | In the receiving device’s DAC |
With stereo RCA, the source has already converted its digital audio to analog before sending it. With optical, the signal remains digital until the receiving component converts it for analog playback. The DAC, processing, and other components in the signal chain can therefore affect what you hear; the connection type alone does not establish which setup will sound better. Philips explains the distinction between digital and analog audio connections, while Cambridge Audio’s connection guidance describes RCA analog outputs and inputs.
Which connection should you use?
Choose optical when both devices have matching optical ports
Optical/TOSLINK is a straightforward digital connection when the source has an optical output and the receiver or DAC has an optical input. Because it carries the signal as light, it can also provide electrical isolation between connected devices. Confirm that the devices support the audio format you plan to send.

- 【Excellent Sound Quality】Our dac audio converter adopts a built-in professional audio amplifier chip and a dual-channel operational amplifier, which can amplify the RCA output level and make the sound pure and clear
- 【Professional Input Signal Processing】Analog to digital audio converter provides professional 24Bit/192KHz sampling rate, avoiding distortion of the original signal. Optical input supports signal processing up to 32, 44.1, 48, 96, 192 sample rates, and 24-bit bit streams
- 【Plug and Play】SPDIF to RCA converter works great with HDTVs, set-top boxes, DVD/Blu-Ray players and game consoles. (NOTE: It is incompatible with 5.1 channel signal such as Dolby AC3, please adjust the audio output to PCM before use.)
- 【Note】Before using the product, adjust the audio output format of the TV to PCM (Device Home→System Settings→Picture and Sound→Sound Settings→Digital Audio Output→PCM), and Volume can only be adjusted on the output device, not via the TV remote control. In addition, the product does not support connection to headphones
Choose stereo RCA when both devices have matching analog ports
A red-and-white stereo RCA cable is appropriate when the source provides analog left/right outputs and the receiver has matching analog inputs. This uses the source component’s digital-to-analog conversion, which may be useful if you prefer that component’s output or if analog is the available connection. Make sure you are using line-level analog jacks, not a single digital coaxial jack.
Keep digital coaxial separate from stereo RCA
If both devices have matching digital coaxial S/PDIF ports, use that digital connection rather than treating it as an analog RCA pair. Sony notes that digital coaxial uses an RCA-type connector but carries a digital signal. See Sony’s optical-versus-coaxial explanation.

Check ports and format support before connecting
- Match the output to the input. Check the labels and manual for an optical output and optical input, stereo analog L/R output and input, or digital coaxial output and input. A connector that fits is not proof that its signal type matches.
- Verify the audio format. Devices vary in the digital formats they accept. Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic 100, for example, accepts two-channel LPCM/stereo PCM but not Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS; for that model, a source may need to be set to PCM. This is a model-specific limitation, not a rule for every DAC. Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic 100 guidance explains the PCM setting.
- Use a converter if the ports do not match. If a TV provides optical output but the receiving system has only analog RCA inputs, you need an active digital-to-analog converter (DAC), not a passive cable. An optical-to-coaxial converter changes one digital connection type to another; it does not turn digital audio into analog RCA audio. Philips describes converter use for connection mismatches.
- Check the selected input and connection. If you get silence or noise, confirm the receiving device is set to the input you used, then check the source’s output format and the manuals for both devices. For optical, also ensure the cable is seated securely and routed without sharp bends.
Optical versus digital coaxial: what published capability does—and does not—tell you
Optical and digital coaxial are both ways to carry S/PDIF; they are not the same as analog stereo RCA. Cambridge Audio’s revised October 14, 2025 guidance says optical and coaxial can transmit S/PDIF and PCM information up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and that audible differences between reasonable examples are uncommon in domestic use. Treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a guarantee that every device supports those formats or a universal listening result. Read Cambridge Audio’s optical-versus-coaxial discussion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line: choose by signal, ports, and supported formats
Use optical when you have compatible optical ports and want a digital connection; use stereo RCA when both devices offer matching analog left/right connections; and use digital coaxial only with matching digital coaxial ports. Sound quality is determined by the whole signal chain and its capabilities, not by a blanket claim that optical or RCA always wins.
