Opera’s January 2024 announcement was a plan to bring its AI-focused Opera One browser to iOS—not a launch. Opera announced the iOS release on August 13, 2024, after Apple’s Digital Markets Act (DMA)-related changes opened new room for browser choice in the European Union. Opera’s launch announcement described its Aria AI assistant and a redesigned mobile interface; those are Opera’s product claims, not independent test results.
What changed—and what Opera announced
On January 26, 2024, Opera welcomed Apple’s response to the DMA and said it intended to deliver an AI-centric Opera One for iOS. Opera framed the EU changes as an opportunity for alternative browsers and browser engines to compete on better terms. Opera announced that it was releasing Opera One for iOS on August 13, 2024. It presented the browser as a mobile version inspired by the desktop Opera One design, with Aria AI and updated navigation and search. (Opera’s iOS release announcement)
The regulatory opportunity discussed here is specific to the EU. The announcements do not establish that iOS browser-engine rules changed worldwide, nor do they provide a current country-by-country guide to Opera’s availability or engine eligibility.

What Opera said Opera One for iOS includes
Opera’s August 2024 launch description listed interface controls and AI capabilities. The company’s release notes are a launch-era feature snapshot; they do not independently establish usability, performance, privacy effectiveness, or whether every feature remains available today.
Navigation and search
- Three navigation styles: Standard Navigation, Fast Action Button, and Bottom Search.
- Search shortcuts: swipe-to-search and predictive search suggestions.
- More reading space: Opera said browser bars could hide as a reader scrolls, making more screen space available.
Aria AI
Opera described Aria as providing web-informed answers and help with information retrieval, text or code generation, and product inquiries. The company also listed voice input and image generation using Google’s Imagen2 model, with options to refine, copy, save, share, or use generated images as wallpaper. Opera’s release announcement also listed a built-in ad blocker and free VPN. These are Opera’s stated features, not a comparative assessment against Safari or other iOS browsers. What the EU browser-choice measures did
Apple’s August 22, 2024 announcement described further EU changes to the browser choice screen, default apps, and app deletion. Apple said the updated browser choice screen would appear for EU users who had Safari set as their default browser. (Apple’s announcement of planned EU changes)
On April 23, 2025, the European Commission said it had closed its investigation into Apple’s DMA user-choice obligations after Apple changed the browser choice screen to streamline selecting and setting a new iPhone default browser. That later regulatory update concerns user choice; it does not independently verify Opera’s software features or performance. (European Commission statement, April 23, 2025)

Opera’s reported uptake after the ballot screen appeared
Opera reported a 164% increase in new Opera for iOS users between March 5 and March 7, 2024, around the time the browser ballot screen began appearing after the DMA took effect. The figure is Opera’s company-reported short-window comparison, not an independently measured or controlled estimate that the ballot screen caused the increase. (Opera’s March 2024 report)
For the same March 5–7 comparison, Opera reported increases in new-user inflow of 402% in France, 143% in Spain, 68% in Poland, and 56% in Germany. These are company-reported country figures for that interval, not evidence of a sustained trend.

Opera also cited a survey of 4,000 people—1,000 each in Germany, France, Poland, and Spain—fielded by Pollfish from February 21–24, 2024. Respondents were aged 18–54 and included all genders. Opera’s statement that 91% of Europeans wanted more choice and transparency should be read in light of that disclosed sample: it is a company-commissioned result from those four markets and age range, not a representative measurement of every European resident.
