Install the profile over a stable internet connection before you travel. At your destination, enable the eSIM and select it for mobile data in your phone’s SIM settings. Opera says the plan activates automatically when the eSIM first connects to a network in that destination. Opera’s setup guide also recommends turning off data roaming on your regular SIM to avoid home-carrier charges.
First, check whether your phone and Opera app are eligible
A missing eSIM option or a setup that will not proceed may come down to a requirement rather than a connection fault. Opera’s requirements are the latest Opera for Android, Android 10 or newer, an eSIM-capable handset, and an unlocked device. Android 10 alone does not guarantee eSIM support: handset capability and carrier-lock status are separate checks.
- Update Opera for Android to the latest version.
- Confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked. If you are unsure, Opera advises checking with your mobile operator.
- Use Opera for Android, not Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile; Opera says its eSIM cannot be acquired in those apps.
Opera’s eSIM information describes a data-only service. It gives the phone internet access for apps as well as the browser, but it does not replace your existing phone number or provide that number’s calls and SMS.
Install the profile before you travel
- Open the profile icon in Opera for Android, scroll to eSIM, choose a destination and data amount, then complete checkout. In selected markets, the free offer uses a “Claim now” flow.
- Follow the phone’s on-screen prompt to install the eSIM. The prompt varies by phone model, so use the instructions shown on your handset rather than assuming one universal Android menu path.
- Complete installation while connected to a stable internet connection, preferably before departure. Opera says the eSIM itself only needs to be installed once; for another destination, you can add a plan to that same installed eSIM.
If the download or installation does not finish, verify the eligibility checks above and retry only when you have a stable connection. Opera’s published guide does not provide an error-code-specific recovery procedure.

At your destination, enable the eSIM and select it for data
Installing the profile is not the same as choosing it to carry your mobile data. Once you arrive, open your phone’s SIM settings, turn on the Opera eSIM, and select it as the mobile-data line. Opera says activation happens automatically when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination country.
If there is still no connection, confirm that the destination is supported and that the eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data. Opera says the service uses 5G where local networks support it; otherwise it connects using the next available network quality. A 5G connection is not guaranteed in every location.

Avoid roaming charges on your regular SIM
Turn off data roaming for your regular SIM if you want to avoid charges from your home carrier while travelling. This is a billing precaution for the home line, not a fix for the Opera eSIM itself. Keep the Opera eSIM selected for mobile data if you intend to use its plan.
Check plan coverage, allowance, and timing
Opera’s September 2026 launch announcement describes coverage in 47 destination markets. Coverage for a destination and eligibility for the free offer are different: the offer launched in 11 origin markets—the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland—and provides 3GB for three days in selected offer markets. Confirm availability for your route in Opera before relying on it.

Opera says prices vary by destination, plan size, and local currency; the browser displays the price before payment. Its eSIM is powered by Holiday.com. Because topping up requires internet access, Opera recommends topping up before the data runs out or while connected to stable Wi-Fi. These are launch-era details and may change.

Opera’s available setup guidance does not publish a model-by-model compatibility list or a troubleshooting tree for specific errors. After checking the essentials, use these next steps rather than relying on an undocumented toggle:

- Recheck that your destination is covered and that the plan you bought is for that destination.
- Verify the eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data in the phone’s SIM settings.
- Ask your mobile operator to confirm the handset’s eSIM support and carrier-lock status.
- Contact Opera for service or account-specific assistance if the prerequisites and selection are correct but the service still fails.
When comparing Opera eSIM with another travel eSIM or your home carrier’s roaming plan, check destination coverage, data allowance, when validity begins, validity length, data-only limitations, device requirements, local network capability, top-up access, and the actual price shown at purchase. Opera’s published materials describe its own service but do not provide an independent comparison with competing plans.
