openDCIM is a self-hosted, web-based application for tracking physical data-center assets and related infrastructure. It can document racks, equipment, connections, and capacity, but it is not presented as a function-for-function replacement for commercial DCIM suites. Its suitability depends on the workflows and integrations you need—and whether your team can host, secure, and maintain the application.

What openDCIM is—and what it is not

The project describes openDCIM as a free application released under the GPL v3 license. It is designed to record physical infrastructure across one or more rooms or data centers, including equipment inventories, contact records, device templates, cable connections, and retired equipment. Its stated scope also includes capacity management for space, power, and cooling, fault-tolerance tracking, and cabinet center-of-gravity calculations. The project homepage describes integration with intelligent power strips and UPS devices. openDCIM homepage

That scope makes openDCIM a candidate for teams that need structured records of their physical environment. It is not a hosted service advertised by the project: the stated deployment model requires you to provide and operate the web and database stack.

The project explicitly says it does not aim to replace commercial products feature for feature, but to cover most of the features its developers need. Treat it as an option to evaluate against your own requirements, rather than assuming that its feature list establishes parity with a commercial DCIM platform.

What the documented feature set covers

The project’s feature page describes several areas of functionality. Because that page is old, treat the list as documented project scope, not a guarantee that every item is present or unchanged in the release you plan to run. Verify the relevant workflows in that build before making a decision. openDCIM features

Area Documented capability
Racks and cabinets Clickable cabinet zones, chassis support, and overlays for space, power, temperature, and weight capacity
Power Mapping from devices through power strips and panels to source feeds; automatic transfer switch support is also listed
Network Connection mapping for switches
Operations and reporting Rack requests, hosting-cost reports, fault-tolerance reports, and outage impact simulation
Access User rights

For adoption planning, convert these broad capabilities into checks against your own environment: Can your team model the rack and connection detail it relies on? Does the power path represent the equipment you actually have? Are cooling and capacity records adequate for your operational decisions? If integrations with specific PDUs, UPSs, or transfer switches matter, confirm compatibility with the exact hardware and openDCIM release; the published overview does not establish current compatibility for individual models.

What you need to host and secure it

The homepage’s stated requirements are an SSL-enabled Apache web host, MySQL 5 or higher, PHP 8.0 or higher, user authentication through Apache or LDAP, Linux, and a web-based client. These are the project’s published requirements, but the homepage is old, so confirm them against the release and current setup guidance you intend to use. openDCIM homepage

The repository’s installation file describes the usual Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP setup. It says Windows with PHP on IIS or Apache may work but is untested. The same file calls itself basic guidance and points to the wiki for more updated instructions. The support page, however, says the wiki is poorly maintained. Cross-check setup steps with the repository release and current GitHub Discussions rather than relying on any one page as definitive. Installation instructions · Support

Do not reuse sample credentials from installation material. As with any self-hosted inventory system, plan who will administer the server, apply updates, manage access, and protect the records it contains.

Project continuity and support to evaluate

The repository contains a stewardship announcement from Scott Milliken, identified there as the long-time primary contributor. He says he is looking toward retirement, is seeking contributors to take over, and plans a final release numbered 26.01. These are stated intentions, not confirmation that a successor has taken over or that the planned release has been completed. Check the repository for current release and maintainer information before making openDCIM part of a long-term operational process. openDCIM repository

The project’s support page directs questions to GitHub Discussions. That establishes a named discussion channel, but not a response-time commitment or a particular level of current maintainer coverage. For an operationally important deployment, assess whether your team can handle issues and upgrades if external help is delayed.

How to decide whether openDCIM fits your team

Use a small, concrete evaluation based on your own data center rather than the breadth of a feature list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the records you depend on. List the asset, rack, connection, capacity, contact, and retirement details operators must be able to find and keep accurate.
  2. Test representative workflows. In the release you are considering, verify rack modeling, the overlays and reports you need, connection mapping, and any outage or fault-tolerance process your team expects to use.
  3. Check integrations against actual hardware. Confirm whether your installed power strips, UPSs, and transfer switches work with that release; do not infer support for a specific model from a general project description.
  4. Review deployment and access requirements. Confirm the current stack requirements and determine how SSL, authentication, administrator access, backups, and updates will be handled.
  5. Assess operating capacity and continuity. Identify who will maintain the host and application, keep records current, and respond to problems. Review the repository’s current release activity and support discussions.
  6. Compare alternatives against the same checklist. Include workflow depth, integrations, data handling, documentation, support, and the effort required to operate each option—not just licensing cost or the length of a feature list.

A dated wiki page mentions Bluetooth-enabled barcode scanners as an optional way to assist with data entry. It is not a required component, and that reference does not guarantee compatibility with a particular scanner or current release. openDCIM inventory wiki page
