Despite the “takes on rivals” framing, the announcement did not establish a head-to-head advantage over competitors. The practical choice today is whether your application should manage the agent loop itself through the Responses API, use the application-run Agents SDK, or rely on OpenAI’s managed Agents API.
What OpenAI announced on March 11, 2025
OpenAI introduced the Responses API, built-in web search, file search and computer-use tools, an Agents SDK for single- and multi-agent orchestration, and tracing and observability tools. OpenAI described the Responses API as combining Chat Completions’ simplicity with tool-use capabilities associated with the Assistants API. The launch also highlighted an item-based response design, streaming events, and SDK helpers such as response.output_text. OpenAI’s launch announcement called Responses “our new API primitive for leveraging OpenAI’s built-in tools to build agents.”
At launch, computer use was a research preview for select developers. That describes its availability at the time, not current access; check the live platform documentation for present eligibility, supported models, availability, and prices.
Responses API vs. Agents SDK: what is the difference?
The key difference is how much of the agent runtime your application takes responsibility for. The Responses API is the lower-level route: your code controls the agent loop, tool dispatch, and state. The Agents SDK is an application-run runtime that adds orchestration features such as turn handling, tool execution, guardrails, handoffs, and sessions. The SDK uses the Responses API by default for OpenAI models, so these options can be combined rather than treated as mutually exclusive across an entire product. OpenAI’s Agents guide and SDK documentation describe the current options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Option | Who runs the agent loop? | Best fit | Control and responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responses API | Your application | Direct integration, short workflows, or applications that need to own tool dispatch and state. | Most direct control; your code handles orchestration and state. |
| Agents SDK | Your application, with SDK runtime support | Workflows that benefit from built-in turns, tools, guardrails, handoffs, sessions, or tracing. | More orchestration support than direct Responses integration while the application still runs the SDK. |
| Agents API | OpenAI | Managed agent infrastructure, particularly for longer-running work and saved progress. | OpenAI operates the harness and manages agent infrastructure. |
Choose Responses API for direct control
Use Responses when you want to integrate model calls and tools directly and are prepared to implement the surrounding loop and state management yourself. It can also suit a small workflow that mainly needs a model response. OpenAI’s Agents guide positions this as the direct, lower-level path.
Choose the Agents SDK for application-run orchestration
Use the SDK when your application should run the agent but would benefit from a runtime for handling turns, executing tools, enforcing guardrails, handing work between agents, or managing sessions. Current SDK documentation describes Python and TypeScript tracks, with integrations including hosted tools, function tools, MCP, and tracing. Python SDK documentation and TypeScript SDK documentation provide the implementation details.

Choose Agents API for OpenAI-managed infrastructure
Agents API is distinct from both the SDK and the Responses API. It is the managed option: OpenAI runs the harness and manages agent infrastructure. OpenAI’s current Agents guide associates it with longer-running tasks and saved progress.
Is the Assistants API being discontinued?
Yes. OpenAI’s current Assistants API FAQ says the API is deprecated and will be removed in August 2026, and recommends Responses API for new projects. The FAQ is the relevant date for current migration planning; the March 2025 launch announcement’s earlier mid-2026 target is no longer the date to rely on.

| Benchmark | OpenAI-reported result |
|---|---|
| OSWorld | 38.1% (OpenAI, 2025) |
| WebArena | 58.1% (OpenAI, 2025) |
| WebVoyager | 87% (OpenAI, 2025) |
These are vendor-reported launch figures for a research-preview model, as stated in OpenAI’s announcement. They are not a cross-vendor comparison and do not demonstrate that the Responses API or Agents SDK outperforms rival platforms. The article’s “takes on rivals” framing is therefore strategic, not a proven performance result.
