ChatGPT’s phone number is 1-800-242-8478 (1-800-CHATGPT). OpenAI introduced the experimental phone service on December 18, 2024. Current OpenAI guidance says people calling from U.S. or Canadian numbers in supported countries can use it without an account, with 30 free minutes per month; standard carrier fees may apply.
What is the ChatGPT phone number?
Call 1-800-242-8478, which spells 1-800-CHATGPT. OpenAI introduced the service on December 18, 2024, initially pairing calls from the United States with ChatGPT messaging on WhatsApp. Axios reported the launch details, including a 15-minute calling allowance at the time.
The service is an experimental way to speak with ChatGPT, not a human support line or an emergency number. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can make mistakes. It is intended for people aged 13 and older.
Can you call ChatGPT for free?
OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance states that users in the United States and Canada get 30 minutes of free calling per month. This is the current monthly allowance, not the 15 minutes reported at launch. OpenAI says limits may change based on capacity, and standard carrier fees may apply. Who can call, and is an account required?
You can call from a U.S. or Canadian phone number while in a supported country. OpenAI says you do not need an OpenAI account. Availability can depend on the country and whether the number is supported.
A quiet place can make the conversation easier to follow. OpenAI suggests headphones or earphones to help prevent interruptions, but they are optional.

What happens to calls and transcripts?
OpenAI says it stores calls and transcripts and may review them for a limited period for safety and abuse prevention. Conversations are associated with the phone number used to call. Avoid sharing information you do not want connected to that number or retained for that purpose.
Can you talk to ChatGPT on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp availability has changed since the U.S. phone service launched. OpenAI said ChatGPT would stop being available on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, following a change to WhatsApp’s policies and terms. It advised users to link their accounts to preserve chat history; chats would not transfer automatically, and WhatsApp did not support chat exports. OpenAI’s WhatsApp transition notice contains those details. OpenAI said more than 50 million people had used ChatGPT on WhatsApp; that figure is OpenAI’s own statement, not an independent audit.

On July 13, 2026, OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had returned to WhatsApp in the European Economic Area (EEA). The release notes describe messaging, image uploads, voice notes, image creation and multiple languages. Availability depends on the WhatsApp number’s country code, may roll out gradually, and is subject to usage limits. This return does not mean the service is available on WhatsApp worldwide. See OpenAI’s release notes for the EEA availability update.
