Is Sora available on Android?
No. Sora launched on Android in November 2025, but the Android app and Sora’s web experience are now discontinued. OpenAI’s Help Center gives April 26, 2026, as the discontinuation date and directs users to the sunset page to export content they created.
The API has a separate scheduled end date: OpenAI says it is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026. That date applies to the API, not to continued access to the Android app or web experience. Check OpenAI’s Sora discontinuation guidance for current instructions.
How to export videos you created with Sora
- Go to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset.
- Choose Export and follow the on-page steps.
OpenAI recommends exporting as soon as possible. The company says it will notify users by email if it offers a final export window; do not assume that the export route will remain available indefinitely.

What the Android app offered at launch
Sora 2 was introduced by OpenAI on September 30, 2025, as a video-and-audio generation model. Its accompanying social app let people create and remix videos, browse a customizable feed, and use “characters” to place a verified likeness into scenes. Sora 2 was described as supporting synchronized dialogue and sound effects along with video generation. The initial Sora 2 rollout was invite-based and began in the United States and Canada; that launch detail does not establish the Android app’s own country-by-country availability.
Characters and consent
OpenAI described characters as a way to use a person’s likeness in generated scenes. The setup used a short, one-time video-and-audio recording to verify identity and capture likeness. The company said users could control who used a character and revoke access.

Provenance and safety measures
At launch, OpenAI said Sora outputs carried both a visible watermark and invisible C2PA metadata. It also described stronger protections for teens, prompt and output screening, content moderation, and controls for reporting and removing content. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its own systems and policies.

In a December 12, 2025, engineering retrospective, OpenAI said work on the Android app ran from October 8 to November 5, 2025, a 28-day build by a four-engineer team using Codex. The retrospective reported that the app reached number one in the Play Store on launch day, Android users generated more than one million videos in the first 24 hours, and the crash-free rate was 99.9 percent. These are company-reported figures; the retrospective did not provide an independent audit or methodological details for the metrics.

OpenAI’s account described the launch as giving Android users the ability to turn a short prompt into a video. The retrospective identifies a global launch but does not list the countries where the app was downloadable on launch day, so the initial U.S. and Canada rollout of Sora 2 should not be mistaken for a definitive Android availability list.
