OpenAI announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT on October 5, 2026, alongside expanded conversion-data integrations and new work on incrementality, brand resonance, and brand suitability. Advertisers can use existing measurement tools to track certain outcomes, but the early performance figures OpenAI shared are partner- or brand-specific—not benchmarks or guarantees for future campaigns.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI says the new ChatGPT ad format uses images to present product inspiration, show how a product is used, or illustrate experiences a product or service makes possible. The company frames the format as a way to help people discover brands and understand their offerings. The announcement does not give a complete specification of the visual ads’ availability or rollout timing. OpenAI’s announcement also says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week; that is OpenAI’s stated audience figure, and the announcement does not provide a methodology for it.

How advertisers can measure impact

Connect conversion data

OpenAI says integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp make it easier to send conversion data from existing systems to ChatGPT Ads. Advertisers can create a data source in Ads Manager and send events using the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API (CAPI), or both. Measurement requires a received event that matches the campaign’s configured conversion, falls within the applicable attribution window, and can be connected to an eligible ad click using available signals. OpenAI’s Conversion Measurement documentation identifies the click reference as oppref; preserve it through redirects. If the same conversion is sent through both Pixel and CAPI, use the same event ID so the system can deduplicate it.

Distinguish attribution from incrementality

Attribution associates a conversion with an ad under defined rules and a time window. Incrementality research asks whether advertising caused additional outcomes compared with what would have happened otherwise. OpenAI says it is exploring geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic, and early-stage brand-resonance measurement with Kantar and Cint. Those efforts are at different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable campaign reports. OpenAI’s measurement overview describes this work.

Interpret the early figures in context

OpenAI’s announcement and measurement materials cite the following findings. Each applies to a named brand, partner, or analysis and measures a different outcome:

Reported finding What it measures
15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition than WeightWatchers’ blended paid-search benchmark, reported by DV Rockerbox in 2026 An attributed CPA comparison for WeightWatchers; not a general campaign benchmark.
67% of incremental purchases came from net-new customers, reported by WorkMagic in 2026 WorkMagic’s finding for wellness brand Dose.
93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new, reported by Triple Whale in 2026 Portland Leather visitors from ChatGPT Ads.
52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions occurred within an hour of the matched ad impression, reported by OpenAI in 2026 An early analysis of global campaigns optimized for deeper-funnel outcomes.
2.3 times more incremental orders for Dose than last-click attribution captured, estimated by WorkMagic in 2026 A geo-lift study estimate, not a direct comparison of all campaign results.

The 15.3% figure compares attributed CPA with a paid-search benchmark; the Dose results concern incremental purchases and a geo-lift estimate; the Portland Leather result concerns new visitors. They answer different questions, so none by itself predicts what another advertiser will achieve. OpenAI’s measurement overview provides the stated context for the findings.

What Ads Manager reports—and why totals may differ

OpenAI describes Ads Manager as a beta self-serve platform being gradually opened to more businesses. Its materials describe CPM and CPC buying, campaign management, and reporting. Access, eligible features, and supported countries can change, so advertisers should check current Ads Manager availability. OpenAI’s Ads Manager information describes the platform.

The Ads Manager help page lists impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate (CTR), average cost per click (CPC), average cost per thousand impressions (CPM), and conversions. It says impression, click, and CTR reporting refreshes approximately every 15 minutes, while spend insights may be delayed by 7–8 hours. Static UTM parameters can be added to landing-page URLs for existing analytics tools. These are details from the current help page and may change. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics lists the reporting details.

Ads Manager, an advertiser’s analytics provider, and other ad platforms may show different conversion totals. OpenAI cites differences in attribution methods and windows, timestamp boundaries, consent and storage conditions, deduplication, and campaign configuration. For a useful comparison, align the event definition and attribution window first, then check that signal implementation and campaign settings match. Separate click-attributed and view-through results, and do not treat attribution as proof of causal lift.

Brand suitability, privacy, and user control

OpenAI says its placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising and aim to keep ads away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts. It describes automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring, and says qualifying advertisers can use Negative Phrases to narrow placement requirements. These are descriptions of OpenAI’s safeguards, not published results from an independent audit. The announcement says Integral Ad Science (IAS) and DoubleVerify are conducting brand-suitability evaluation pilots in controlled testing environments without access to private user conversations. The pilots are evaluation work in progress, not completed certifications.

OpenAI’s Help Center says ads are separate from ChatGPT answers and advertisers receive aggregated performance reporting rather than users’ chats. Availability and user controls vary by region and over time. These statements describe OpenAI’s policies; they should not be confused with what third-party measurement providers receive as campaign data. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT Help Center page explains its user-facing description.

How to assess a ChatGPT ad campaign

  1. Set the goal. Decide whether the campaign is intended to generate reach, clicks, or a supported conversion outcome, and choose the corresponding buying basis and optimization options available in Ads Manager.
  2. Define the event and window. Specify the conversion event and attribution window before launch so results can be compared on consistent terms.
  3. Verify event signals. Confirm the Pixel or CAPI is sending the intended event, preserve oppref through redirects, and use a shared event ID if sending the same conversion through both methods.
  4. Choose the right evidence. Use attributed conversions to understand reported credit under the selected rules; use a suitable incrementality design when the question is whether advertising produced additional outcomes.
  5. Set suitability requirements. Review the available placement controls, including Negative Phrases if eligible, and treat independent suitability pilots as ongoing evaluation rather than certification.
  6. Reconcile reports carefully. Compare matching event definitions and windows across Ads Manager and analytics providers, account for reporting delays, and investigate differences in consent, timestamps, deduplication, and campaign configuration.
