For a one-off conversion, start with the application you already use—if it can export the exact format you need and the result checks out. Choose a dedicated open-source converter when you need broader format support, repeatable steps, or batch processing. The right answer depends on the file type, output, workflow, and installed software; “built-in” features vary by operating system, version, and application.
How to choose between built-in and open-source converters
Compare the actual tools available to you rather than assuming every operating system includes the same conversion features. A viewer may open a file without being able to export it to another format. For any candidate tool, check five things:
- Format support: Can it read your precise source format and write the destination format?
- Fidelity: Does the converted file retain the layout, fonts, images, metadata, and other features you need?
- Workflow: Is a graphical interface enough, or do you need repeatable commands or batch processing?
- Dependencies: Does the tool need extra libraries or programs for a format?
- Security: How will files be handled, particularly if input is untrusted or processing is automated?
| Situation | Good starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One common file, converted occasionally | An installed application or operating-system feature | Confirm the specific source and destination formats, export capability, result quality, and steps for your OS version. |
| Office documents or recurring office-to-PDF exports | LibreOffice | Check the result in the application your recipient will use; confirm any export options your workflow requires. |
| Image conversions, repeated transformations, or command-line work | ImageMagick | Check the formats supported by your installed build and whether it has the necessary delegates. |
| Automated or public-facing processing of untrusted files | Evaluate the converter’s security configuration and processing boundaries | Review policy controls and deployment-specific risks; do not assume defaults suit every service. |
When an installed tool is enough
For a simple, occasional conversion, an application already on your computer may be the easiest choice if it can export the required destination format. Confirm the feature for your operating-system release and installed apps; the available Windows help landing page does not establish a universal set of built-in conversion features, and capabilities differ across systems and versions. Microsoft Support: Windows help and learning
Before relying on the output, open it in the destination application or ask the recipient to check it. Successful conversion—or merely being able to open the new file—does not prove that every element survived intact.

When LibreOffice is a practical choice for documents
LibreOffice documents support for a range of formats in Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw, including Microsoft Office and legacy formats. Writer can save to formats such as DOCX, DOC, RTF, plain text, and HTML. That makes it a candidate for office-document conversions, but compatibility with a format does not guarantee that every document feature will look identical after conversion. Choose an output format for the recipient
The LibreOffice Documentation Team recommends OpenDocument when consistent rendering across LibreOffice versions and other programs is the priority. For a document the recipient is not expected to edit, it recommends PDF. The best choice still depends on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

Export PDFs from the command line
LibreOffice help documents command-line PDF export in Windows, Linux, and macOS shell contexts. Its parameters include options such as selecting a page range and encrypting an exported PDF with a password. Check the available options and syntax for your installed version before building them into a workflow. The help page’s example identifies PDF version 1.7 as the default for that example; this should not be treated as a guarantee for every installation. LibreOffice Help: PDF CLI Parameters
When ImageMagick is better suited to images
ImageMagick is a command-line image-processing tool, not a universal converter for every file type. Its documentation demonstrates a basic JPEG-to-PNG conversion with magick rose.jpg rose.png and shows how conversion can be combined with resizing and other operations. Reusable commands and sequential output naming can help with repeatable image workflows; those capabilities do not imply that a conversion is lossless or that any particular speed or quality advantage has been measured. - 1.Remapping - Assign any key to any other key, including ones that aren't on the keyboard, like media volume controls or the "Command/Windows" key on older keyboards like model M's.
- 2.Macros - A single key press can "play back" a series of key presses. For example, you could set F12 to send Control-Alt-Delete or set one key to represent an entire shortcut like Alt-C for "copy" when doing copying and pasting. If there's a certain combination move in gaming, you could set one key to perform the entire combination.
- 3.Function Layers - Changes the behavior of other keys when the function key is held down. Think of this like adding extra "Shift" keys to add more functions to existing keys.
- 4.IfSelect - Press a key once and it permanently changes the function of any number of keys until that same key is pressed again. Think of this like "Num Lock" which completely changes what the number pad does.
- 5.If you want to utilize the special features other than straight conversion to USB such as key remapping, macros, and layers, you will need to make a text configuration file and upload it to the converter which is most easily done in Windows. Once configured, this configuration is stored within the cable and you can use it on any computer without the need for additional drivers or software. Check format support in your installation
ImageMagick’s general format reference explains that support can rely on libraries or external programs. For example, reading PDF files requires Ghostscript; some other formats have their own requirements. Check the format list for your installed build and its dependencies rather than assuming every format named in the project’s documentation is available locally. ImageMagick: Image Formats
Check fidelity before using or sharing a converted file
Convert a copy first, then inspect the output in the program or context where it will be used. For documents, check page breaks, fonts, tables, images, links, and any embedded objects or features important to the recipient. For images, check dimensions, color, transparency, and metadata if those matter to the task. If the output is for someone else, confirm that their application can use it as intended. These checks are practical safeguards, not a claim that one converter has been benchmarked against another.

Account for security in automated conversions
A converter processes file contents, and format support may involve external components. If you accept files from the public or automate handling of untrusted inputs, assess the software, its dependencies, and where processing occurs. ImageMagick documents a web-safe policy that limits reading and writing to formats such as GIF, JPEG, and PNG, and disables filters and indirect reads. It also provides configurable policies for other needs.
The ImageMagick project’s security-policy documentation cautions: “Overly restrictive policies might hinder legitimate image processing tasks, while overly permissive policies can introduce vulnerabilities.” Review and adapt policy rules to the deployment instead of assuming that a default configuration is appropriate for every use.
