Open Networking & Edge Summit North America 2020 was a virtual Linux Foundation event held September 28–30, 2020, co-hosted by LF Networking and LF Edge. Under the theme “Distributed But Always Connected,” it explored how open networking, edge computing, IoT, cloud-native technologies and 5G intersect across enterprise, carrier and cloud environments.

When and how the 2020 summit took place

The final event ran online from September 28 through September 30, 2020. The archived schedule lists times in Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−04:00). The official LF Events archive and schedule identifies the theme as “Distributed But Always Connected.”

An April 9 announcement had described an in-person gathering at JW Marriott LA Live in Los Angeles. That was an earlier plan, not the event’s final format: the event archive and LF Edge event listing establish that the summit was held virtually.

What the summit covered

The program brought together technical and executive audiences from enterprises, telecoms and cloud providers. Its subject areas included open networking, edge and edge cloud, IoT, cloud-native networking, enterprise IT, carrier and cloud operations, and AI/ML-enabled applications for 5G, IoT, edge and enterprise deployments. Use cases spanned manufacturing, retail, oil and gas, transportation and telco edge cloud.

Program tracks included Carriers – Core, Edge & Access; Enterprise Networking & Edge; Cloud Networking & Edge; Business Critical & Innovation; and Sponsored Tutorials. The schedule mixed keynotes and breakouts with technical deep dives, panels, tutorials, case studies, Ask the Expert sessions and technical showcases. LF Networking described the pre-event program as having 80+ sessions across five tracks; that is the organizer’s advance count, not an independently verified tally. Its September 23, 2020 preview also set the program in the context of cloud-native networking, 5G and SDN/NFV work at the time.

Projects and examples in the program

LF Edge highlighted practical open-source topics rather than a particular hardware product. Examples included real-time sensor fusion for loss detection using EdgeX Foundry; industrial IoT data management using Project EVE and Fledge; and low-touch device onboarding and application delivery using Secure Device Onboarding and Open Horizon. Sessions also covered distributed cloud for telco networks and edge, Akraino use cases and project updates.

These sessions were demonstrations and discussions of projects and use cases, not endorsements of specific devices. The LF Edge event listing provides examples of the featured topics.

What the organizer reported about attendance

The Linux Foundation’s post-event report counted 1,778 registrations: 1,322 for the live event and 456 additional registrations for post-event platform access at the time of reporting. The figures below are organizer-reported; they should not be read as independent measurements.

Where to find recordings

The LF Events archive links to session recordings on YouTube. LF Edge’s recap describes the playlist as including keynotes, lightning talks, in-depth tutorials, panel discussions and project and use-case sessions. The original event platform was stated to remain accessible for one year; that period has long passed. Check the archive and its linked recording destinations for what is currently available rather than assuming all platform features or videos remain accessible.
