ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors 8.0 was a free office suite for Windows, Linux, and macOS, released on January 31, 2024. It added desktop PDF form workflows, Moodle connection support, and password encryption for standard PDF files. Its published Windows minimums are modest, but they do not prove that it is faster or lighter in everyday use than Microsoft Office or LibreOffice—and version 8.0 is historical, not the current release.
What ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors 8.0 offered
ONLYOFFICE announced Desktop Editors 8.0 as a free desktop application for Windows, Linux, and macOS. At release, the installer formats listed were DEB, RPM, EXE, and DMG; Snap, Flatpak, and AppImage were described as forthcoming. Those are January 2024 distribution details, not confirmation that a particular 8.0 installer remains available today. ONLYOFFICE’s release announcement covers the launch.
PDF forms and encryption
The release added the ability to create and fill PDF forms using editable DOCXF templates, as well as password encryption for standard PDF files. Password protection for fillable forms was not available in 8.0, so the new encryption feature should not be read as covering every PDF form workflow.
Moodle connection and desktop interface changes
Version 8.0 added Moodle as a cloud connection provider. It also introduced local interface themes on Windows and Linux, plus Windows Start menu shortcuts for creating new files.

Right-to-left support had limits
The broader Docs 8.0 update described bidirectional text support in documents and presentations as partial, while the right-to-left interface was in beta. Those qualifications matter if Arabic, Hebrew, or other right-to-left workflows are central to your choice.
Is ONLYOFFICE 8.0 lightweight?
ONLYOFFICE’s Windows requirements page lists a dual-core 2 GHz processor, at least 2 GB of RAM, and at least 2 GB of free disk space. The vendor cautions that requirements depend on document complexity and that the stated figures apply to the simplest files. ONLYOFFICE Windows Desktop Editors system requirements are minimums, not measurements of typical resource use.

ONLYOFFICE also reported that Docs 8.0 was faster than its own 7.5.1 release in publisher-run tests: creating empty files was “up to 15%” faster, opening normal files “up to 20%” faster, and opening big files “up to 15%” faster. These comparisons are against the previous ONLYOFFICE version, not Microsoft Office or LibreOffice. The 2024 release post does not establish an independent cross-suite benchmark.
For context, Microsoft lists Windows minimums for consumer Office 2024 of a 1.1 GHz or faster two-core processor, 4 GB RAM, and 4 GB of available disk space. These vendor-published figures are not a controlled comparison: CPU criteria are expressed differently, and minimum requirements do not show how quickly either suite opens or edits a real document. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time-purchase suite for one PC or Mac, distinct from Microsoft 365 cloud services. Microsoft’s Office 2024 system requirements provide the listed minimums. LibreOffice also publishes installation prerequisites, but those do not supply a directly comparable resource-use benchmark. LibreOffice system requirements.

Is ONLYOFFICE 8.0 better than LibreOffice or Microsoft Office?
The available requirements and feature announcements cannot settle which suite is better overall. The practical choice depends on your operating system, the files and collaboration workflows you rely on, and which features matter to you. Minimum hardware figures are not performance tests; nor do they establish how faithfully a suite handles your particular documents.
- Check your actual files: Test the DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, and PDF documents you use, including formatting, formulas, comments, and embedded content that matter to your work.
- Match features to your workflow: ONLYOFFICE 8.0’s PDF forms and Moodle connection may be useful if you need those specific capabilities.
- Compare like with like: Microsoft Office 2024 is a one-time purchase, while Microsoft 365 is a separate subscription and service offering; decide which Microsoft product you mean before comparing.
- Verify the release: The official changelog dates Desktop Editors 8.0.0 to January 31, 2024, and lists later versions. Check the current download page and changelog rather than treating 8.0 as the latest release or assuming its present support status. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors changelog.
Is ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors 8.0 still supported?
The changelog establishes that 8.0.0 was released on January 31, 2024, and that later versions followed. That alone does not establish the present support or maintenance status of the 8.0 release. Check ONLYOFFICE’s current download and support information before installing it, particularly if you need current security fixes or compatibility updates.
