Online gaming data security depends on protecting information at every stage: what a game collects, how it is stored and transmitted, which services can access it, and how it is deleted or recovered after an incident. Players can reduce account and device risks; game operators need a broader program covering servers, vendors, privacy, and response.

What online gaming data security covers

A game may handle account credentials, payment details, voice and text chat, location, gameplay telemetry, and moderation records. Each kind of data creates a different reason to collect it and a different risk if it is exposed, altered, or kept longer than necessary.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises organizations to collect only what they need, protect it, and dispose of it securely. Its mobile-app guidance specifically recommends deleting location data when it is no longer relevant. NIST Special Publication 1800-28, published in February 2024, frames data confidentiality as identifying and protecting assets against breaches while considering privacy and security risk.

How players can protect a gaming account and device

Secure account access

  • Use a strong, unique password for each gaming account. If the service offers multifactor authentication, enable it.
  • Use the platform’s official account-recovery process and keep recovery details current. Do not share passwords or one-time sign-in codes with other players or people claiming to be support.
  • Be cautious with links and sign-in pages sent through chat, email, or community channels. Navigate to the game or platform directly when checking an account alert.

Review privacy and sharing choices

  • Check the game’s privacy and account settings for options controlling profile visibility, friend requests, voice or text chat, location sharing, and data used for personalization.
  • Share only the information needed to play. Avoid putting your real name, address, school, or routine location in a public profile or chat.
  • For a child’s account, review communication, discovery, spending, and privacy settings with them; use available parental controls and consent tools.

Protect the device and connection

  • Keep the device operating system, game client, and security updates current, and install games from trusted sources.
  • Use device encryption where available, especially on phones and laptops that store account sessions or game-related files. CISA warns that unencrypted device data can be read, manipulated, stolen, or made inaccessible by someone who gains access.
  • Avoid entering credentials or payment information on untrusted networks or through unofficial game launchers. Use the official service’s secure connection rather than bypassing certificate or security warnings.

How game developers and operators should secure player data

Map and minimize the data

Start with an inventory of player, account, payment, voice and chat, location, telemetry, and moderation data. For each item, document its purpose, owner, access path, and retention period. Remove collection that is not needed for the game’s stated function, and delete information when its purpose ends.

Protect credentials and data flows

  • Never store passwords in plaintext. The FTC says passwords should be protected with an iterated cryptographic hash, and users should have a way to reset forgotten credentials.
  • Use current HTTPS/TLS for sensitive traffic such as logins, matchmaking, APIs, chat, and payment-related communications. Validate certificates correctly.
  • Encrypt sensitive data stored on devices, servers, logs, backups, and removable media; protect encryption keys and limit who can access them.
  • Apply least privilege and strong administrative authentication to game servers, cloud consoles, analytics systems, and support tools.

Assess vendors and embedded software

Game clients and services can rely on software beyond the studio’s own code, including SDKs, analytics and advertising libraries, anti-cheat components, chat services, and payment providers. The FTC recommends checking third-party code for known vulnerabilities and real-world reports. Review what each component can access, what data it shares, how it is updated, and how quickly its supplier addresses security issues.

On January 17, 2025, CISA and the FBI updated their Product Security Bad Practices guidance, urging software manufacturers to avoid security practices that put customers at risk and to prioritize security throughout development. That applies to the game’s own systems as well as the dependencies they use.

Prepare to detect, respond, and recover

Maintain useful security logs, monitoring, named incident-response contacts, breach-notification procedures, and recovery priorities. Encrypt backups, store them securely, and test restoration rather than assuming a backup will work. CISA recommends encryption and secure backups because unencrypted data can be exposed and inaccessible data may be difficult to restore.

How to structure a security program

NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 is a free, voluntary, flexible framework that organizes work into six functions. It can help a studio connect technical controls with ownership and recovery rather than treating security as a one-time checklist.

Function Application to a game service
Govern Assign responsibility, set security and privacy expectations, and oversee risk and vendor decisions.
Identify Inventory player data, systems, suppliers, access paths, and business-critical services.
Protect Minimize collection, control access, secure credentials, and encrypt data in transit and at rest.
Detect Monitor systems and review logs for suspicious access or changes.
Respond Coordinate containment, communications, and required breach notifications.
Recover Restore services and data using tested, protected backups and recovery priorities.

What changes when players are children or teens

Children’s data, profiling, advertising, and parental consent merit deliberate controls rather than being treated as ordinary account settings. Review age-appropriate defaults, how age is handled, what information is collected from minors, whether it supports profiling or advertising, and how parental consent is obtained when required.

In 2024, the FTC published a staff report based on responses from nine major social-media and video-streaming companies, including Amazon, which owns Twitch. The report described extensive data collection and inadequate safeguards for children and teens. In 2025, FTC materials described a COPPA-related action involving Genshin Impact: the agency alleged violations and announced a $20 million settlement that included loot-box restrictions for users under 16 without parental consent. These examples concern particular companies and cases; they are not a measurement of security across the gaming industry.

How to judge whether a security approach is adequate

A consumer account-hardening checklist, an internal studio program, and a managed security service address different parts of the lifecycle. Compare them by what they actually cover, not by a general promise of being “secure.”

  • Data minimization: Does the approach reduce collection and define deletion when a purpose ends?
  • Coverage: Does it address accounts, player devices, game servers, cloud consoles, and support systems—or only one layer?
  • Encryption and keys: Does it protect data in transit and at rest, and specify who can access encryption keys?
  • Supply chain: Are SDKs, anti-cheat software, ad libraries, chat services, and analytics vendors reviewed and kept updated?
  • Children’s privacy: Are age-appropriate defaults, consent handling, and limits on profiling or advertising addressed?
  • Detection and response: Are suspicious activity, incident ownership, notification, and recovery procedures covered?
  • Backups and operations: Are backups protected and restoration tested, and can the organization sustain the operational workload?
  • Ongoing maintenance: Is there evidence of regular reviews, vulnerability handling, and updates?

No gaming-specific breach-rate statistic is established by the cited guidance and reports, so a general cybersecurity statistic should not be treated as a measure of risk for games. The practical test is whether the controls match the data and systems involved and are maintained throughout their lifecycle.
