If you already have reliable phone access and want a larger screen for reading, entertainment, drawing, or multitasking, a OnePlus Pad can be the better next purchase.
What each device is for
A phone and a tablet solve different problems, so there is no universal winner. A phone is the practical first device when you need to be reachable and connected away from Wi-Fi. A tablet is an additional screen for work and leisure when those essential phone needs are already covered.
Choose a OnePlus phone for everyday mobile access
As one model-specific example, OnePlus lists cellular bands, dual nano-SIM support, eSIM subject to local carrier compatibility, NFC, and multiple cameras on the US OnePlus 13 specifications page. It lists wide, telephoto, and ultra-wide rear cameras. These are manufacturer specifications for that regional model, not a guarantee that every OnePlus phone has the same capabilities. Check the exact phone, market, and carrier before buying.
Choose a OnePlus Pad for a larger personal screen
The US OnePlus Pad 3 product page lists a 13.2-inch 3.4K display with a 144 Hz refresh rate and a 12,140 mAh battery. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent test results. The larger screen is the clearest reason to choose the Pad for reading, watching media, handwriting, drawing, or keeping multiple apps visible.

Can a OnePlus Pad replace a phone?
Do not buy a Pad expecting it to take over your phone’s everyday role. The Pad 3 product information describes connectivity features with OnePlus phones, but does not establish that a Pad is a universal substitute for a phone’s cellular service, calling, messaging, camera convenience, or payment functions. If you need those functions and lack a dependable phone, prioritize the phone.
For travel or work away from home, check whether the exact tablet model and regional configuration support the connectivity you need. The Pad’s phone-connectivity features should be treated as cross-device features, not assumed cellular independence.

When should you buy the Pad first?
A tablet-first purchase makes sense if you already have a working phone and your unmet need is screen space. Consider the Pad 3 if you will use it regularly for tasks that benefit from a larger display rather than expecting it to replace essential phone access.
- Reading and media: A 13.2-inch display offers substantially more room than a phone for longer reading sessions and video.
- Multitasking: OnePlus says multitasking with up to five apps is currently exclusive to the Pad 3 and Pad 2 running OxygenOS 16. Feature availability depends on model and software; it is not a capability to assume across all OnePlus tablets or phones.
- Typing or drawing: OnePlus lists the Smart Keyboard and Stylo 2 as Pad 3 accessories. They are optional: consider the keyboard for regular typing and the stylus for handwriting or drawing, and verify compatibility for your exact model and region.
Do you need a OnePlus phone to use a OnePlus Pad?
OnePlus documents cross-device connectivity between the Pad 3 and OnePlus phones, but that does not mean a OnePlus phone is a prerequisite for every tablet use. Whether a particular feature works depends on the devices and software involved. If buying around a specific connection feature, check OnePlus’s current compatibility details for both exact models rather than assuming the feature works with any phone or Pad.

OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 information identifies the Pad 3 and Pad 2 as the models with up-to-five-app multitasking at the time of that page. Its rollout timing may vary by device, country, and carrier. Software features and availability can change, so confirm current support where you live.

- Confirm your phone situation. If your current phone is unreliable or you lack dependable service, resolve that need first.
- Match the purchase to the job. Pick the phone for mobile access and everyday phone functions; pick the Pad for a larger screen and tablet-centered work or entertainment.
- Check regional specifications. Verify cellular bands, SIM or eSIM support, and carrier compatibility for the exact phone. Confirm the precise Pad configuration and any connectivity features you plan to use.
- Verify software and accessory support. Check that the multitasking or cross-device feature you want is supported on your model and that the Keyboard or Stylo is compatible.
- Check current local listings. Prices, stock, configurations, and accessory availability vary. The official product pages provide specifications, but do not establish today’s street price or availability.
Bottom line: buy for the gap in your setup
Buy a OnePlus phone first if you still need dependable everyday mobile access. Buy a OnePlus Pad first only when that need is already met and the larger screen addresses what your current setup lacks. They are complementary devices, not interchangeable first purchases.
