On a typical Windows 11 installation, a personal OneDrive folder is located at C:\Users\<UserName>\OneDrive. That is a common location, not a fixed rule: you can choose another folder during setup or move OneDrive to another local drive. The path shown in the setup window is the best guide to its actual location.
This guide explains how to find the folder, choose a location, move an existing OneDrive folder safely, and troubleshoot common sync problems.
Where is the OneDrive folder in Windows 11?
A standard personal OneDrive folder is commonly located at:
C:\Users\<UserName>\OneDrive
For example, if your Windows account name is Alex, the folder may be:

The name shown in File Explorer depends on the account:
| Account | Typical File Explorer name |
|---|---|
| Personal Microsoft account | OneDrive or OneDrive – Personal |
| Work or school account | OneDrive – [CompanyName] |
OneDrive does not have to stay on the C: drive. It can be configured on another local drive, such as D:. A mapped network drive cannot be used as the OneDrive sync location.
Find the OneDrive folder from File Explorer
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Look in the navigation pane for OneDrive, OneDrive – Personal, or OneDrive – [CompanyName].
- Select that entry to open the synced folder.
If the navigation entry is not obvious, enter C:\Users\<UserName> in File Explorer’s address bar, replacing <UserName> with your Windows account name. Then open the applicable OneDrive folder if it is there.
You can also check which account is connected through OneDrive settings:

- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area near the clock. Select the upward arrow first if the icon is hidden.
- Select Help and Settings, then Settings.
- Check the account and sync settings to identify the connected account.
The folder in File Explorer is the working local folder. It is not necessarily the same as the root of your online OneDrive at onedrive.live.com.
Choose the OneDrive folder during first setup
If OneDrive has not yet been configured on the PC, choose its location before synchronization begins:
- Open Start, type OneDrive, and select the OneDrive app.
- Sign in with your personal Microsoft account or work/school account.
- On the This is your OneDrive folder screen, review the displayed path.
- Select Change location to choose a different folder, or select Next to accept the displayed location.
- On All your files, ready and on-demand, select Next.
Do not assume the default is always C:\Users\<UserName>\OneDrive. The path shown in the setup wizard is authoritative.

Move an existing OneDrive folder from C: to another drive
Do not simply drag an active OneDrive folder to D: while it is syncing. Microsoft’s supported method is to unlink the PC, move the folder, and then link OneDrive to the moved folder.

- Select Help and Settings, then Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC, then Unlink account.
- In File Explorer, move the existing OneDrive folder to the desired local drive, such as D:\OneDrive.
- Start OneDrive again from Start by typing OneDrive and selecting the app.
- Select Get started and sign in with the same account.
- Continue until the screen displaying the OneDrive folder location appears.
- Select Change location, choose the folder you moved, and select OK.
- When OneDrive warns that the destination already contains files, select Use this location.
- Complete setup. If you previously synchronized only selected folders, repeat that folder-selection choice after relinking.
Unlinking does not delete your OneDrive files in the cloud. It disconnects the PC from synchronization. Locally available files remain in the local folder, and changes made while the account is unlinked synchronize after it is linked again.
What the OneDrive status icons mean
Seeing a filename in the OneDrive folder does not necessarily mean the complete file is stored on the computer. Files On-Demand uses placeholders to reduce local disk usage.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Available when online | The file is a placeholder. It downloads when opened and requires an internet connection. |
| Available on this device | The file is downloaded and remains locally available. |
| Always keep on this device | The file or folder is kept downloaded on the PC. |
To make a file or folder available offline, right-click it in File Explorer and select Always keep on this device. To remove the local copy while retaining the cloud copy, select Free up space.
Deleting a file from the local OneDrive folder is not a local-only operation. Deletions, edits, and new files in the synced folder are synchronized with OneDrive and can affect the cloud copy and other connected devices.

The path or filename is not supported
OneDrive does not allow these characters in file or folder names:
” * : < > ? / \ |
Leading and trailing spaces are not allowed. These names are also blocked:
.lock, CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0–COM9, LPT0–LPT9, _vti_, desktop.ini
Names beginning with ~$ are blocked as well. For folder backup, Microsoft says the complete Windows path, including the filename, must be fewer than 260 characters. OneDrive and SharePoint limitations also set a maximum of 255 characters for an individual path segment and a combined OneDrive-root-plus-relative-path limit of 520 characters.
An Outlook PST file is inside OneDrive
Outlook data files should not normally be stored in the synced OneDrive folder. A path such as C:\Users\<UserName>\OneDrive\Documents\Outlook Files can produce Processing changes or A file is in use messages because Outlook keeps the .pst file open. Move the PST outside OneDrive, then update its location in Outlook.
The local path uses an unsupported drive type
OneDrive cannot sync from a mapped network drive and does not support synchronization through symbolic links or junction points. Use a normal folder on a locally attached drive instead.

OneDrive is running with elevated privileges
Running OneDrive as an administrator can prevent OneDrive commands from appearing in File Explorer’s context menu. Start the normal OneDrive app rather than an elevated instance.
Reset OneDrive when the folder is stuck
Resetting OneDrive disconnects sync connections and causes a full resynchronization. It does not delete files or cloud data. You may need to select previously excluded folders again.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter wsreset.exe and select OK. A blank Command Prompt window may appear and close before Microsoft Store opens.
- Open Run again and enter %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset.
If Windows cannot find that file, try C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset. If that also fails, try C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset.

Quick answer: Is OneDrive always in C:\Users?
No. C:\Users\<UserName>\OneDrive is a common personal-account location, but the folder can be placed on another local drive during setup or moved later using the unlink, move, and relink procedure. Check File Explorer or the setup window to identify its actual location.
