OmniCluster Technologies built the SlotServer 1000, a self-contained x86-compatible server on a half-length PCI 2.1 card that used a National Semiconductor Geode processor. Contemporary coverage documents that product connection, but does not establish that National Semiconductor and OmniCluster formed a formal alliance. Nor was the SlotServer a conventional blade server fitted into a blade chassis.

Did National Semiconductor and OmniCluster formally partner?

The available contemporaneous reports establish that OmniCluster’s SlotServer 1000 used a National Semiconductor Geode processor; they do not establish a broader corporate partnership or joint venture. Golem.de reported the processor in its 2 October 2001 coverage of the product, while LWN’s conference roundup described OmniCluster as launching the SlotServer 1000 at ISPCON. Neither report, as available here, announces a formal alliance.

That distinction matters: a product incorporating another company’s processor is evidence of a technology connection, not by itself proof that the companies “joined forces.” The title’s alliance language therefore overstates what the documented reports show.

What was the SlotServer 1000?

Golem.de described the SlotServer 1000 as an autonomous, x86-compatible server implemented as a half-length PCI 2.1 plug-in card. It drew power from the host computer but operated independently, with networking, storage, graphics, audio and USB interfaces. Its processor was a National Semiconductor Geode, and the report specified 32–256 MB of SO-DIMM memory.

TP-Link 2.5GB PCIe Network Card (TX201) – PCIe to 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Card
  • 2.5 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the 2.5G Base-T Technology, TX201 delivers high-speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps, which is 2.5x faster than typical Gigabit adapters. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls
  • Versatile Compatibility – The Ethernet Network Adapter is backwards compatible with multiple data rates(2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps Base-T connectivity). The 2.5G Ethernet port automatically negotiates between higher and lower speed connection.
  • QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
  • Wake on LAN – Remotely power on or off your computer with WOL, helps to manage your devices more easily
  • Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases

In other words, this was a server computer packaged as an expansion card—not merely an accelerator that borrowed the host’s processing resources. Its use of the host for power did not make it a conventional server blade or a card that required a blade enclosure.

Was it a server blade?

Not in the usual chassis-based sense. A traditional server blade is designed to slot into a purpose-built blade enclosure, which typically supplies shared infrastructure such as power, cooling and networking. The SlotServer 1000 was reported as a PCI card installed in a host computer. Calling it a “server blade” can obscure this physical and operational difference.

Feature SlotServer 1000 Conventional blade architecture
Physical form Half-length PCI 2.1 plug-in card (Golem.de, 2001) Server module designed for a blade enclosure
Power and infrastructure Used power from the host computer; reported as operating independently Uses the blade enclosure’s shared infrastructure
Processor National Semiconductor Geode (Golem.de, 2001) Varies by product and generation
Memory 32–256 MB SO-DIMM (Golem.de, 2001) Varies by product and generation
Current availability Not established by the cited reports Depends on the specific product

The comparison describes architecture, not equivalent performance: a 2001 PCI server card and a blade server are different product categories, and the cited reports do not provide a basis for benchmarking them against each other.

When did OmniCluster launch it, and what did it cost?

LWN’s contemporaneous conference roundup says OmniCluster Technologies launched the SlotServer 1000 at ISPCON. Golem.de reported a price of approximately US$500 per board, dependent on memory configuration, in 2001. That is a historical reported price, not a current market value or a present-day offer.

Can you still buy a SlotServer 1000?

Current availability is not established by the cited reporting. The 2001 price does not show that the card remains on sale, and no current listing is documented here. Anyone seeking one would need to verify a specific seller’s listing, the card’s condition and whether a compatible host system is available; the historical reports do not establish present-day compatibility or support.

The patent record lists Omnicluster Technologies, Inc. in connection with a modular small-network architecture. It supplies corporate and technical context, but the listing alone does not establish a National Semiconductor–OmniCluster alliance.
