For a beginner who wants to find a model, download it, and start chatting without using a terminal, LM Studio is likely the easier place to start. Its documented workflow puts model discovery, loading, and chat in one desktop app. Ollama is a natural fit if you are comfortable with terminal commands or want to connect a local model to an app or toolchain. That is a practical judgment based on their documented workflows—not the result of a published head-to-head usability test.
How do their first-run workflows compare?
| Task | LM Studio | Ollama |
|---|---|---|
| Find a model | Use the Discover tab to browse curated models or search for one. LM Studio’s getting-started guide documents this flow. | Browse the searchable Ollama model library. |
| Download and start chatting | Download a model, open the model loader in Chat, select the model, and start a conversation. You can adjust load parameters if needed. | Ollama’s Windows app runs in the background; its documentation also describes using the ollama command in Command Prompt, PowerShell, or another terminal. |
| Use it from another app | Offers API options, as well as a headless service mode. | Offers a local API and app integrations. |
| Ease-of-use evidence | A visual, app-centered sequence is documented. | Documentation emphasizes the command line and API alongside the background app and model library. |
LM Studio’s documented sequence is: install the app, choose a model in Discover, load it in Chat, then chat. Loading a model allocates memory for its weights and other parameters; downloading a model does not mean it is already loaded and ready to run. See the LM Studio setup guide.
Ollama is not simply a command-line-only tool. Its Windows documentation describes a native app that runs in the background, with the ollama command available from a terminal and an API at http://localhost:11434. Ollama also presents model browsing and integrations in its documentation.
Which one is easier for your needs?
Choose LM Studio for a GUI-first start
If you want to browse, download, load, and chat through visible desktop controls, LM Studio has the more straightforward documented path. It is the more likely choice for someone who does not want to learn terminal commands just to try a local model. That recommendation assumes your computer meets LM Studio’s current platform requirements.

Choose Ollama if you prefer the CLI or want integrations
If you already use a terminal, Ollama’s command-based workflow may feel simple rather than intimidating. Its local API and integrations also suit people connecting a model runner to another application. Ollama documents APIs and integrations in its documentation.
For development, compare the service setup and client
Both products go beyond desktop chat. LM Studio documents llmster, a standalone daemon for headless operation, plus desktop headless mode and just-in-time model loading for REST endpoints. See LM Studio’s headless-service documentation. Ollama documents APIs and integrations. For an app or service, compare the API your client supports, how each runner starts, and how you want models loaded; the easiest choice depends on that setup.
Will Ollama or LM Studio work on your computer?
Check operating-system support, processor requirements, memory, graphics support, and the needs of the model you want before choosing by interface. Product requirements are compatibility guidance, not a promise that every model will run well.

LM Studio requirements and recommendations
- macOS: The current requirements page lists Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, or M4 and macOS 14 or newer. It recommends 16 GB or more of RAM; an 8 GB Mac may work with smaller models and a modest context.
- Windows: It supports x64 and ARM. The x64 version requires AVX2; the page recommends at least 16 GB of RAM and 4 GB of dedicated VRAM.
- Linux: It supports x64 and ARM64 and is distributed as an AppImage. The cited page specifies Ubuntu 20.04 or newer and says versions newer than 22 are not well tested.
These details come from LM Studio’s system requirements; check the current page against your exact device.
Ollama’s Windows requirements
Ollama’s Windows documentation lists Windows 10 22H2 or newer (Home or Pro). For GPU acceleration, it specifies NVIDIA driver 551.61 or newer, or AMD ROCm v7/HIP7-capable drivers or Vulkan-capable Radeon drivers. The page notes that some Radeon RX 6000 systems may not expose ROCm v7 on current Windows drivers, with Vulkan as a fallback. These driver details can change, so check Ollama’s current Windows requirements for your hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much storage and memory do local models need?
Disk space and runtime memory are separate constraints. You need room on disk for downloaded model files, and the model also needs memory while it is running. LM Studio says loading allocates memory for model weights and other parameters; a model’s file size, context size, and runtime use all affect what will run comfortably.

For Windows, Ollama says the binary installation needs at least 4 GB of space. That is only for the installation: model downloads need additional storage and can range from tens to hundreds of GB, according to its Windows documentation. Check available disk space before downloading, particularly if you plan to keep several models.
Is one faster or better at generating answers?
The documentation cited here does not establish a blanket winner for speed or answer quality. Results depend on the particular model, its quantization, the software backend, and your hardware. Do not treat a smoother first-run experience as proof that the same model will generate faster or produce better answers.
