Colored edges around text on an OLED monitor usually come from a mismatch between the panel’s subpixel layout and the way text is rendered. On Windows, compare ClearType tuned for that display with ClearType turned off, then check several apps: the better setting depends on the panel and the text you are viewing.
Why OLED text can look fringed
A monitor’s pixels contain subpixels that combine to produce color. Windows ClearType can use the arrangement of those subpixels to sharpen text. But some OLED panels arrange subpixels differently from the conventional red-green-blue (RGB) stripes assumed by many text-rendering techniques.
RTINGS describes WOLED layouts such as RWBG and RGWB, as well as a triangular RGB layout used by QD-OLED. Those arrangements can make colored edges around letters more noticeable. The effect varies by panel, program, and viewer; not everyone notices it during ordinary use. RTINGS’ text-clarity testing explains the relationship between subpixel layout and text appearance.
How to compare ClearType settings in Windows
- Set the monitor to its native resolution. Keep Windows text size and display scaling comfortable while you assess the result; there is no universal scaling setting that eliminates fringing.
- On the OLED display you want to evaluate, open Windows Search, type Adjust ClearType text, and launch the tuner.
- Follow the on-screen samples, choosing the text that looks clearest on that monitor.
- Compare the tuned result with ClearType turned off. Search Windows for Adjust ClearType text and clear the option to turn it off, then assess the same text again.
- Repeat the comparison in more than one application. ClearType does not affect every program, and it cannot change lettering that is already part of an image.
For black text on white, or white text on black, RTINGS reports that turning ClearType off on WOLED can eliminate fringing by using the white subpixel. The trade-off is that text may appear less bold or clear. Treat this as an option to compare rather than a universal fix; the result is personal and may differ for other colors or panels.

What else can reduce the visible effect?
Consider pixel density
Higher pixel density can make OLED fringing less visible, according to RTINGS, but it does not guarantee that the effect will disappear. Density depends on both screen size and resolution, so compare displays at the size and viewing distance you intend to use.
Compare specific models and layouts
When choosing a monitor, look for information about its exact subpixel arrangement and assess text clarity under realistic conditions. “OLED” alone does not predict how comfortable text will look. A specific example is RTINGS’ review of the 39-inch Dell Alienware AW3926QW: it identifies the display as WOLED with an RGB subpixel layout and reports sharp office text without fringing. That finding applies to this model, not OLED monitors generally. Read the Dell Alienware AW3926QW review.

When the setting does not change the text
- The text is inside an image: ClearType cannot alter letters that have already been rendered into image pixels.
- The app renders text differently: ClearType is not applied in every program, so a system setting may improve one app without changing another.
- The result looks worse after tuning: Re-run the tuner while viewing the affected monitor and compare the samples with ClearType off. Keep whichever result is more comfortable for the text you read.
