Best choice: reuse an old router as a wired access point if it supports AP mode and you can run Ethernet to it. Choose a mesh node when the exact model is supported by your mesh system and coordinated management is important. A wireless repeater can avoid the cable, but it is a separate mode with model-specific compatibility—not the same thing as joining a mesh.

How the three setups differ

Option Connection back to the network What to check Main trade-off
Old router in Access Point (AP) mode Ethernet from the existing network The router must offer AP mode; follow its model-specific instructions. Reuses existing hardware and provides a wired link, but does not automatically join a coordinated mesh system. ASUS explains its operating modes.
Old router in Repeater mode Wireless connection to the existing Wi-Fi network The router must offer repeater mode and work with the existing network. Avoids running Ethernet, but compatibility and feature behavior depend on the models. ASUS describes Repeater mode as connecting wirelessly to an existing wireless network to extend coverage. ASUS operating-mode guidance.
Compatible mesh node Wired or wireless backhaul, as supported by the system Confirm that the exact node is supported by the exact mesh system. Provides the mesh system’s management and features when compatible; systems do not necessarily accept devices from other brands. D-Link describes its system-specific compatibility.
Purpose-built range extender Wireless repeating or wired AP mode, depending on model Check the extender’s modes and how they interact with your router. Designed to address a coverage gap, but it is not automatically equivalent to a mesh node. TP-Link compares extender, powerline, and mesh approaches.

There is no universal speed winner established by the cited product guidance. It describes modes, topology, and compatibility—not a controlled performance comparison. The right choice depends on whether you can provide Ethernet, whether the devices support the needed mode, and whether you want mesh-system management.

When an old router makes sense as an access point

Use AP mode when Ethernet can reach the location where you need better coverage and the old router supports that mode. In this arrangement, Ethernet connects the old router to the existing network; the old router supplies Wi-Fi at the new location. It remains an access point, not a mesh node simply because it broadcasts a familiar network name.

Use the manual for the exact router model to configure AP mode, addressing, and cabling. The mode and topology vary by manufacturer, so a universal sequence of menu steps would be unreliable. Choose an Ethernet cable length that reaches the placement you need, and check the port capabilities of both devices if link speed matters.

When repeater mode is the practical option

If you cannot run Ethernet, an old router may be usable as a wireless repeater—but only if its firmware supports repeater mode and it can connect to your existing Wi-Fi. ASUS distinguishes this from AP mode: AP mode uses an Ethernet connection to the existing router, while repeater mode uses a wireless link. Check the old router’s manual and the main router’s compatibility before configuring it.

Do not treat every wireless extender as a mesh node. A repeater extends a network through a wireless connection; mesh membership and coordinated behavior depend on support from the particular mesh system.

When to choose a mesh node

Choose a node supported by your mesh system when you want the system’s coordinated management and features. Compatibility is model- and system-specific: a matching Wi-Fi generation or network name is not enough to establish support. For example, D-Link describes expanding its mesh system with compatible D-Link mesh equipment, while Google warns that some third-party bridges and mesh devices may not work fully with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi.

Backhaul rules also vary. Google documents Ethernet backhaul for supported Nest Wifi and Google Wifi units. TP-Link says its Deco system does not support repeater mode and requires the main Deco to connect physically to a modem, router, or internet cable. Its support guidance states: “Deco does not support Repeater mode, so the main Deco must always be wired to a modem, router, or Internet cable to get Internet access.” Read TP-Link’s Deco guidance for use with an existing router and Google’s Ethernet backhaul instructions.

Check the network layout before adding mesh equipment

If a mesh system will sit behind an existing router, confirm whether the system should use Router mode or Access Point mode and how its main unit must connect. TP-Link documents both Router and AP modes for Deco and cautions against certain direct-wiring arrangements in Router mode. Google warns that leaving NAT active on a third-party router can create a separate subnet in some wired layouts. These are product-specific topology considerations, not universal rules for every mesh system.

Third-party bridges can also affect mesh functions. In its guidance for Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, Google lists possible problems with device information, guest-network behavior, port forwarding, IPv6, QoS, WPA3 interoperability, and roaming through some third-party bridges. These cautions apply to Google’s documented setup; they do not establish that every mesh system has the same limitations. Google lists its third-party extender and bridge considerations.

Verify your exact models before choosing

  1. Identify the old router’s make and model. Check its manual or settings for AP mode and, if you need a wireless uplink, repeater mode.
  2. Identify the mesh system and proposed node. Check the system maker’s compatibility information for those exact models; do not infer compatibility from the brand or Wi-Fi generation alone.
  3. Decide whether Ethernet can reach the intended location. If it can, compare a supported wired AP with a supported wired mesh backhaul. If it cannot, verify that the proposed repeater or mesh system supports wireless backhaul.
  4. Check the topology and operating mode. If adding mesh behind an existing router, follow the mesh maker’s guidance for Router or AP mode and the required connection from the main mesh unit.

Google Wifi illustrates why checking the model matters: Google says, “Google Wifi can’t be used as an extender or repeater for your current router.” That is a limit of this product, not evidence that all mesh hardware lacks repeater functionality. Google explains what Google Wifi can do.
