An old Google Pixel can serve as a second, scheduled destination for your self-hosted data without replacing the Raspberry Pi that runs your services. In the setup described by CCStartup Blog in 2026, the Pi remains the source of truth and sends copies to the phone with rsync over SSH. That can reduce the risk of losing everything when one device fails, and the phone’s battery may keep its copy available through a short outage. It does not protect against losing the whole home, and Android’s background-process and charging behavior require attention.

How does an old Pixel work as a backup server?

The Pixel is a destination for backups, not the machine that owns or serves the primary data. The Raspberry Pi continues to run the self-hosted services and holds the authoritative files; a scheduled job on the Pi sends copies over the local network to storage on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the arrangement described by CCStartup Blog, the phone runs Termux, an Android terminal environment capable of running native ARM binaries. The Pi initiates the transfer using rsync over SSH. A cron job on the Pi schedules the work, so the phone does not have to wake up and start the backup itself.

  1. Keep the Pi as the source of truth. Services and their working data remain on the existing server.
  2. Prepare the phone as a reachable destination. Termux provides the phone-side environment for the SSH and rsync workflow.
  3. Have the Pi push a scheduled copy. The cron job runs rsync over SSH to copy selected data to the Pixel.
  4. Keep the copy intact and recoverable. For applications with databases or related metadata, define what must be captured together rather than copying only the obvious media or document files.

This design is useful precisely because the phone is expendable in a way the primary server is not: if the Pixel fails, the original data remains on the Pi and the secondary copy can be recreated on another spare device. CCStartup Blog estimates repeating its setup on another spare phone took about 20 minutes; that is the author’s estimate for their own arrangement, not a general setup-time guarantee.

What does this protect against—and what does it leave exposed?

A second copy on another device helps with a single-device failure, such as the Pi becoming unusable, but it is still a local backup if both devices stay in the same home. Separate the threats you want to survive before deciding whether this is enough.

  • One device fails: the Pixel copy may preserve data if the Pi’s storage or hardware fails, assuming the relevant files were copied and the backup is usable.
  • Power is interrupted briefly: the Pixel’s own battery can keep the phone and its stored copy powered for a time. It does not power the Pi, so it is not a UPS for the server or for an in-progress transfer.
  • The home is lost or inaccessible: a fire, theft, flood, or other site-wide event can take both devices. A copy stored elsewhere, including a suitable cloud backup, addresses a different risk.

A local second copy and an off-site copy are not competing answers to the same problem. The Pixel can add resilience without a new cloud-storage bill when the hardware is already available, while an off-site copy is the relevant protection when the concern is loss of the location itself.

How does the Pixel compare with a second Raspberry Pi or cloud storage?

The Pixel is most compelling when the backup task is simple, scheduled, and the phone is already owned. A second Pi is a more conventional server destination; cloud storage offers geographic separation if configured for the data and recovery needs involved.

Option Upfront cost Power resilience Maintenance and capability Geographic protection
Old Pixel Attractive when already owned; no additional device purchase is needed in that case. Its battery may bridge a short outage for the phone and its stored copy, but not the Pi. Android process limits, battery optimization, heat, and charging behavior need management. Best suited here to a scheduled copy, not the Pi’s full workload. None if kept in the same home as the Pi.
Second Raspberry Pi Requires a second device if one is not already available. No built-in battery advantage is described for the Pi. A conventional Linux-server approach, but the cited account does not establish a performance or cost comparison for a second Pi. None if kept in the same home as the original.
Cloud storage May involve a recurring plan or other storage cost; the amount depends on the service and configuration. Not dependent on the home’s power in the same way as a local device. Requires a backup method and a plan for restoring the data; provider-specific limits and terms matter. Can provide separation from a home disaster if the copy is stored remotely.

CCStartup Blog reported an idle draw of approximately 2.85 W for its Raspberry Pi 4 and under 2 W for its phone when the screen was not kept awake. Those are author-reported figures for that setup, not independent measurements or guaranteed consumption for another Pi, Pixel, workload, or charging state. The same account reported two months without a failure at the time it was written; that observation is not a long-term reliability guarantee.

What Android issues can interrupt a scheduled backup?

Android may restrict background work, and a phone configured for occasional interactive use is not automatically a dependable always-on server. Treat background execution, temperature, and charging as operational requirements rather than assuming the cron job alone makes the transfer reliable.

Battery optimization and background work

The account says Termux and Termux:Boot need battery-optimization exemptions so Android does not stop overnight work. Check the Android settings for the installed versions and explicitly allow the components the setup depends on to run in the background. Menu names and behavior can vary by Android version and device; the available data does not establish one universal settings path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Immich’s own mobile-backup documentation also warns that strict Android battery optimization can interfere with background work. That concerns the Immich app’s mobile uploads, a separate workflow from a Pi-initiated rsync transfer, but it reinforces that Android’s background restrictions need to be considered for whichever component is expected to run unattended.

Phantom processes and version-specific behavior

CCStartup Blog describes a cap of 32 phantom processes introduced in Android 12 and discusses version-specific controls or ADB workarounds. Treat that as the blog’s report about Android 12 and its implementation, not as a timeless rule for every Android build or a setting to change blindly. Confirm the phone’s Android version and use guidance appropriate to that version before applying any workaround.

Screen, heat, and charging

Keeping the display on wastes power. The author reports using a screen-off wake lock, removing the case, providing ventilation, and managing charging with a smart plug. These are implementation choices from that account, not a guarantee that a particular charging schedule or thermal setup suits every Pixel. Avoid trapping heat around a phone that remains connected and active, and check that the device’s charging behavior is appropriate for its placement and workload.

What should an Immich backup include?

If the self-hosted data is an Immich library, copying only the photo and video files is incomplete. Immich’s backup-and-restore documentation says a backup must include both the database and asset files, and that Immich does not arrange filesystem backups for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documentation identifies the library, upload, and profile paths as containing critical original content. It recommends stopping the Immich server during a backup when possible. If the server cannot be stopped, it recommends backing up the database first and the filesystem second, reducing the chance that a restored database refers to files that are missing from the copy.

Immich’s mobile-backup feature is not a substitute for this server backup. Its documentation says uploads can run when the app opens or resumes and periodically in the background; it supports album selection and checksum-based deduplication, defaults to Wi-Fi, and offers an Android charging-only option. Those settings govern uploads from the phone to Immich, whereas the Pixel-as-destination design sends server data from the Pi to the phone. Decide which direction you need and verify that the actual server-side database and assets are included.

Does Google Photos make an old Pixel a complete backup?

No. Google Photos eligibility is device- and quality-specific, and a Google Photos copy is not the same thing as a complete backup of a self-hosted server or an Immich instance.

Google’s current Photos Help page says Pixel 5 and earlier receive unlimited storage for photos and videos backed up from the device at no charge. It also states: “Photos and videos backed up in Original quality use up your Google Account storage.” Google’s quality guidance says Storage saver compresses photos above 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p, and that Storage saver uploads count toward account storage under current rules.

Those distinctions matter: do not assume that any old Pixel, any upload quality, or any Google Photos copy is unlimited and unchanged. Check the device-specific eligibility and current quality rules for the exact phone and account. Even eligible photo uploads would not automatically include a self-hosted application’s database, configuration, or other files.

How should you decide whether this setup is enough?

Use the Pixel when the goal is a low-cost second local copy for a modest, scheduled workload and you are willing to keep Android’s restrictions and charging behavior under control. Choose a different or additional destination when your needs include heavier always-on services, easier conventional server administration, or protection from a loss affecting the whole home.

  • Choose the Pixel as a secondary node if you already have a spare phone, the data transfer is manageable, and the primary Pi remains the source of truth.
  • Consider another server if you need a more expandable destination or intend to run services beyond a straightforward backup job. The cited account explicitly expects the Pixel to struggle with heavier always-on services.
  • Add an off-site copy if surviving fire, theft, or another site-wide loss matters. A second device beside the Pi cannot meet that need.
  • For application data, define recovery before copying. Identify all required files and databases, preserve a coherent set, and make sure you know how to restore it.

The practical strength of the arrangement is its modest role: it adds another place for the data to exist, using hardware that may otherwise sit unused. It should be treated as one layer of resilience, not proof that every backup is complete or restorable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I restore a backup directly from the Pixel if my Pi stops working?

Potentially, if the copy contains the data your services need and you can access it from replacement hardware. A phone holding files is not automatically a ready-to-run replacement server; preserve any required application data and document the restore process separately.

Will a scheduled rsync copy keep deleted files or older versions?

The described setup establishes a scheduled rsync transfer but does not specify whether it retains historical versions or mirrors deletions. Decide whether you need version history, and verify the chosen transfer behavior before relying on the copy to recover from accidental deletion.

Can I run my self-hosted services on the Pixel instead of the Raspberry Pi?

The described design uses the phone as a backup destination, not as a replacement host. Its author expected the Pixel to struggle with heavier always-on services, and the available account does not establish that it can take over a particular Pi workload.

Does the Pixel battery keep the backup transfer running if the house loses power?

It can keep the phone powered temporarily, but it does not supply power to the Pi that initiates the transfer. A power cut can therefore stop the source machine even while the phone remains on.
