Start by identifying exactly what fails: the game may never open, crash after starting, show a black game window, or leave the entire Windows display blank. Those symptoms point to different fixes. On Windows 10 or 11, check for an update for the exact game and edition first, then choose a troubleshooting step that matches the error instead of applying compatibility tweaks at random.
What should I check before changing settings?
Write down the exact game title, edition or release, Windows version, how you installed it, and the full error message. “Won’t launch” can mean a launcher closes, a process briefly appears, a game crashes after its opening screen, or Windows itself loses its picture. Recording which one happens helps keep the diagnosis focused.
Check the game publisher’s support page or update notes for that specific edition before trying a broad workaround. A patch for one release may not apply to another release of the same title. Microsoft also provides a Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older applications, but compatibility options are not a universal repair: operating-system architecture, security changes, and changed software requirements can prevent an old program from running.

- Keep the exact error text, including a named file or code. A missing library calls for a different response than a display-mode failure.
- Note whether the failure occurs before a game window appears, only when changing display modes, or outside the game as well.
Also distinguish the game’s release from its name alone. A retail disc, a publisher’s updated edition, and a storefront release can differ in their installer, bundled files, and support instructions. If you find an update or workaround, confirm that it applies to the edition actually installed. Avoid starting with a generic “old games” fix before checking that detail.

What kind of failure am I seeing?
Use the visible symptom to choose a troubleshooting branch. A game-only black screen is not the same problem as a blank Windows display, and a game from the DOS era is not equivalent to an ordinary Windows application.

Think of the comparison in four parts: symptom, distribution, software generation, and evidence. “Black screen” is not enough detail by itself: determine whether it is the game window or all of Windows. “Old disc” is also not enough: establish whether the drive can read it, whether setup can execute, and whether the game later fails a protection check. A compatibility dropdown cannot make unsupported code architecture run, restore a removed copy-protection driver, or install a missing game dependency. Treat it as one diagnostic option—not proof that every older title can be made compatible.
Use the result as evidence rather than cycling through every option. If the game still exits in the same way, return to the original setting and look for a more specific clue: an error naming a DLL, a failure that occurs only when switching to fullscreen, or a setup program that never completes. A changed symptom is useful too; record what changed and reverse the setting if it introduced a new failure.
If the game is installed through Steam

What should I do if an error names a missing DLL or DirectX file?
Use the component named in the error to identify the dependency. A newer DirectX version already present in Windows does not guarantee that every optional library used by an older game is installed.
For example, Microsoft identifies d3dx9_35.dll as a legacy component that may be missing even when a newer DirectX version is installed. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime supplies optional older side-by-side libraries, including D3DX, XAudio, XInput, and related components. Microsoft’s download documentation, dated 2024, says: “Note that this package does not modify the DirectX Runtime installed on your Windows OS in any way.” It adds legacy components; it is not a downgrade of Windows’ core DirectX runtime.
- Read the full error and confirm the exact filename it names.
- Check the named dependency against the relevant official Microsoft download information. Use Microsoft’s package rather than downloading a loose DLL from an unfamiliar website.
- Try launching the game again after installing a matching dependency.
This route is for a missing legacy DirectX component. It does not establish that DirectX is the cause of a crash with no such error, or that the runtime package repairs unrelated startup failures.
Do not infer from a filename alone that every game needs the same package. The useful clue is the component explicitly named by the error; match that clue to the official dependency information. A newer DirectX version and an optional older side-by-side library are not interchangeable facts. Installing the legacy runtime does not replace the Windows runtime, and it should not be presented as a general-purpose crash repair.
How do I fix an old game that opens to a black screen?
If Windows remains visible and usable while the game window is black, start with the game’s own display modes. Compare windowed, borderless-windowed, and fullscreen behavior, changing one option at a time.
Compare display modes without stacking changes
- If the game provides a windowed mode, try it and see whether the picture appears.
- If the game offers borderless-windowed mode, compare it with fullscreen. Intel’s guidance distinguishes fullscreen-exclusive, windowed, and borderless-windowed modes because they can behave differently when switching focus.
- Test Alt+Tab or leaving fullscreen only after noting which mode the game is using. If the black flash happens only during a mode switch, record that detail separately from a game that is black from launch.
- When a game’s publisher or manual gives title-specific display instructions, follow those instructions for that edition instead of treating another game’s workaround as universal.
Intel’s article about older games addresses Windows 10 and Intel HD/UHD graphics; it is not a guarantee for every graphics processor or every Windows 11 setup. Its guidance says to leave “Disable Fullscreen Optimizations” unchecked when checking that feature, then try borderless mode if a particular game continues to have trouble. That is a conditional check, not blanket advice to disable fullscreen optimizations.
A manual for The Seven Years War, for example, discusses windowed mode, multi-monitor output, and DirectPlay. These are title-specific examples. They do not show that another older game requires DirectPlay or should use the same settings.

When testing, note whether the game is black immediately on launch or only after changing focus, exiting fullscreen, or using a second monitor. Those are different observations. If windowed mode works but fullscreen does not, preserve that result and use the mode that works while checking the game’s own instructions. Do not assume a fullscreen tweak will solve a black screen that appears before the game has drawn anything.

If the display stays blank beyond the game window, use Windows’ blank-screen troubleshooting rather than assuming the game alone is at fault. Microsoft’s guidance includes checking monitor connections, resetting the graphics driver, and checking the selected output mode.
- Check that the monitor connection is secure and that the display is on the intended input.
- Press
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + Bto reset the graphics driver. Windows may respond with a beep or a brief screen flicker. - Press
Windows + Pto open the display-mode choices, then check whether the output is directed to the intended screen. - If Windows remains unusable, follow Microsoft’s fuller blank-screen procedure rather than repeating game-specific display changes.
The distinction matters even if the blank display began while starting a game. If Windows remains visible after switching away, continue with the game-only display branch. If the desktop and other applications are also inaccessible, treat it as a Windows display problem first. The keyboard shortcuts above are checks from Microsoft’s guidance, not a guarantee that every blank display has the same cause.
Can a 32-bit game, 16-bit installer, or DOS game run on 64-bit Windows?
These cases have different compatibility limits. Many 32-bit Windows programs can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but that does not mean every old installer or DOS program can run in the same way.
32-bit Windows programs
Microsoft documents WOW64 as the compatibility layer that allows many 32-bit Windows applications to run on 64-bit Windows. If a 32-bit game itself fails, diagnose its specific error, dependencies, and display behavior; its age alone does not establish that its architecture is the barrier.

16-bit installers and DOS programs
Microsoft states: “WOW64 cannot handle 16-bit applications; this includes old installers and all MS-DOS programs.” Changing a compatibility-mode dropdown does not remove that limit. A game may therefore be blocked before its actual game files can be installed, or may need a DOS-specific approach rather than ordinary Windows compatibility settings.
Pay attention to which component is failing. If setup will not run, the barrier may be the installer rather than the game executable. If the game is a DOS-era program, treating it as a standard Windows application will not resolve the distinction Microsoft documents. A compatibility setting can be worth testing for an appropriate Windows program, but it does not turn 16-bit code into supported 32-bit code.

DOS-era games
Treat a DOS-era title as a separate case. GOG provides a DOSBox-specific help result about launching and graphics-mode issues, but the available information does not establish one universal DOSBox setting or prove that a particular title will work. Use instructions for the exact game and edition; do not assume an ordinary Windows compatibility option will solve a DOS launch problem.
Why might an original game disc fail even when I own it?
First determine whether the computer can read the disc. If it cannot, a USB external CD/DVD drive may provide the missing optical-drive hardware. That only addresses access to the physical media; it does not repair an incompatible installer or copy-protection driver.
