Reuse the old Android phone if it loads your Home Assistant dashboard smoothly and the screen is comfortable to read and tap from where you’ll use it. Choose a cheap tablet if you need a larger display or the phone struggles with compatibility, responsiveness, or readability. Home Assistant supports Android phones and tablets as dashboard displays, but it does not certify every older phone or budget tablet—and there is no universal winner without trying your own dashboard on the actual device.

How to choose between an old phone and a cheap tablet

Compare the specific devices you have in mind against the dashboard and installation you plan to use. A tablet’s larger screen can help on a shared wall panel; an old phone may be enough for occasional checks or a smaller space. Those are practical decision rules, not results from comparative device tests.

What to check Old Android phone Cheap Android tablet
Screen comfort Keep it if dashboard text is legible and controls are easy to tap from the intended position. Consider it if the phone’s screen is too small; check the candidate tablet and layout rather than assuming every tablet will be more comfortable.
Browser compatibility Test whether its browser or Android WebView can load the current Home Assistant frontend. Check the actual browser and software version; the tablet form factor alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Responsiveness Load the dashboard you will use, including its actual cards and camera views. Run the same check. Home Assistant notes that low-performance processors and limited memory can affect budget Android devices.
Fixed-panel behavior The official Companion app can launch into Home Assistant and keep the screen on. The same documented Android Companion app options apply; verify they work on the particular device.
Mounting and power Confirm a mount fits and plan a suitable cable and power arrangement. Check the same details, including device dimensions, orientation, connector, and charging specifications.

Test the dashboard before mounting the device

Compatibility and speed are separate questions. Home Assistant describes its frontend as a mobile-first experience and documents browser compatibility builds, but its frontend documentation was last updated May 27, 2020; it is not a current guarantee for a particular device. The documentation also cautions that a device can run modern technology without being fast, especially where processors and memory are limited. See the Home Assistant Frontend documentation for context.

  1. Open the intended dashboard. Sign in on the candidate phone or tablet using the browser or Android WebView you expect to use.
  2. Exercise the real layout. Check the cards, controls, and camera views you intend to leave on screen. Look for slow loading, awkward scrolling, or controls that are hard to tap.
  3. Check viewing comfort in place. Hold or position the device where it will be used. Confirm text remains readable and controls are reachable at the planned distance and orientation.
  4. Inspect the used device before committing. Check its battery condition and confirm the planned charging arrangement is suitable. The documentation does not establish the safety or condition of an individual device.
  5. Verify installation details. Match any mount to the device’s dimensions and orientation, and check its connector and charging requirements before choosing a cable or adapter.

If the phone passes these checks, there is no need to buy a tablet solely because it is a dashboard. If it fails on screen comfort or performance, compare an actual tablet candidate rather than relying on price or screen size alone.

Set up an Android device as a dedicated Home Assistant display

A separate kiosk browser is not automatically required. Home Assistant’s Android Companion app can act as the device’s home app, open Home Assistant after restart, and keep the screen on. Follow the Android Home App (launcher) documentation for the current settings and chooser labels.

  1. Enable the launcher in the Companion app. Open its settings and enable the Android home-app launcher option.
  2. Select it as the home app. Use Android’s home-app chooser to select Home Assistant. The documented behavior is that Home Assistant opens after a restart and pressing Home returns to it; the app drawer is no longer available in the usual way.
  3. Keep the display awake if needed. In Companion app settings, enable Keep screen on to prevent the app’s display from turning off.
  4. Choose a dashboard for the device. Use a focused dashboard with only the controls needed on the panel. Home Assistant recommends configuring the selected dashboard for the kiosk user.
  5. Use a separate Home Assistant user when devices need different defaults. Home Assistant explains that dashboard defaults are profile-specific, so one device’s selection can otherwise affect another device using the same profile. See Multiple dashboards.

When a separate kiosk browser is worth considering

Home Assistant’s integration for Fully Kiosk Browser is an optional route if you specifically need its kiosk controls or device information. The integration documents status, battery, RAM, storage, screen, brightness, motion detection, screensaver, and kiosk controls. Its remote administration feature requires the paid Fully Plus license; the free trial displays a watermark. See the Fully Kiosk Browser integration documentation. For a basic dashboard display, start with the official Companion app options instead of treating Fully Kiosk as mandatory.

Which one should you use?

  • Choose the old phone when it loads your real dashboard smoothly, the screen is comfortable for its intended use, and its battery and charging setup are suitable.
  • Choose a cheap tablet when you need a larger shared display or the phone fails the compatibility, responsiveness, or readability checks.
  • Do not choose by price or form factor alone. Home Assistant’s documentation does not name a universally suitable phone or tablet, and no controlled comparison establishes a best device for every dashboard.
