oksh is a portable implementation of OpenBSD’s ksh(1), based on the Public Domain Korn Shell (pdksh). It is a separate, unofficial project—not an official OpenBSD release—and its maintainers aim to make the shell build across a wide range of operating systems and C compilers.
What is oksh?
The oksh project describes its purpose as “Because all operating systems deserve a good shell.” The project is based on pdksh and ports OpenBSD’s Korn shell to other platforms. Its README explicitly says it is “Not an official OpenBSD project.”
That distinction matters: oksh is its own project, even when a particular release matches the shell in an OpenBSD release. It should not be confused with ksh93, nor should the project’s broad compatibility list be read as a guarantee of identical behavior or support on every system.
How does oksh relate to OpenBSD ksh?
The oksh README identifies version 7.9 as matching the ksh(1) included with OpenBSD 7.9, which the README dates to May 19, 2026. A mirror of the repository’s history records the oksh 7.9 release commit on June 10, 2026. This is a specific version relationship, not a claim that every future OpenBSD change automatically appears in oksh. See the upstream README and repository mirror history.

Does oksh run on Linux, macOS, or other systems?
The project reports oksh as known to run on the following systems. These are maintainer-reported compatibility claims, not an independent test matrix or a promise that every platform has the same level of testing:
- OpenBSD, FreeBSD, DragonFly BSD, NetBSD, HardenedBSD, and SoloBSD
- macOS and Linux with glibc or musl
- Cygwin, Android through Termux, MSYS2, WSL, and WSL2
- AIX, IBM i PASE, Solaris, Illumos, UnixWare 7, and HP-UX with gcc
- midipix, Haiku, SerenityOS, and QNX
The project says Irix is believed to work but still needs testing. If your system is not listed, the project invites contributions for additional platform combinations; treat a build on an unlisted system as something to verify locally rather than an established compatibility result.

Compiler coverage
The README lists clang, gcc, pcc, cparser, xlc, Sun Studio, lacc, Tiny C Compiler, CompCert, Nils Weller’s C compiler, chibicc, kefir, and antcc among compilers known to build oksh. It also lists cproc with a small tweak, vbcc on OpenBSD/i386, and IBM XL C/C++ Advanced Edition 6.0 for Mac OS X. “Known to build” describes the project’s reported experience; it does not establish current continuous-integration coverage for every compiler and operating-system pairing.
How do you install oksh?
Check your operating system’s package repository first. Upstream says oksh is included in some package systems, and package listings also exist for Fedora, pkgsrc, and FreeBSD ports. Availability and version depend on the platform and release branch; a package listing does not mean every architecture or release has a package.

For example, Fedora Packages lists 7.9-2.fc45 for Rawhide and Fedora 45, and 7.9-1.fc44 and 7.9-1.fc43 for Fedora 44 and Fedora 43. Those are Fedora-specific package versions, not universal oksh version numbers. Check the relevant listing for your distribution before installing. The project also mentions unofficial Ubuntu PPA and Debian packages.
If a suitable package is unavailable, build from the upstream source using the project’s instructions. Package installation is generally the simpler route; a source build is useful when you need to control the build or your platform lacks a package.

How do you build oksh from source?
The project says a C99 compiler is the easiest way to ensure a successful build. The normal in-tree build runs the configure script, then make, followed by installation. Configure creates a POSIX Makefile for an in-tree build.
- Obtain and enter the source tree. Use the source release or repository instructions linked from the oksh project page.
- Configure the build. Run
./configurefrom the source directory. If you do not want ncurses support for screen-clearing routines, run./configure --disable-curses. - Compile. Run
makewith a C99-capable compiler available. - Install. Follow the project’s installation instructions for the resulting build and your operating system.
For out-of-tree builds, the README says the process uses the VPATH make extension, which it reports as working with BSD make and GNU make. In-tree builds produce a fully POSIX Makefile.

Cross-compiling
For a cross-build, the project documents setting CC, CFLAGS, and LDFLAGS, then running ./configure --no-thanks. This skips configure checks and writes a generic Makefile and pconfig.h with nearly no options enabled; you may need to edit those files for the target. Adding --no-link limits the process to compiling object files for transfer and later linking on the target. These options describe the upstream build procedure, not a tested recipe for every target system.
What license does oksh use?
The project says its main Korn shell files are public domain, while portability files use BSD or ISC licenses. Fedora’s listing likewise identifies a combination of public-domain, ISC, and BSD-3-Clause licensing. Because licensing is file-specific, consult the repository’s LEGAL file and the headers of the particular files you intend to use or redistribute rather than treating the whole project as covered by one blanket license.
