OKF Agent Memory is an open-source tool that stores a project’s structured knowledge as human-readable Markdown inside the Git repository, then gives coding agents access to that knowledge through a command-line interface and an embedded stdio MCP server. Because the knowledge is a set of versioned files rather than a chat transcript, it can be read in a later session after the conversation that produced it has ended. It is a persistence design for project knowledge, not a guarantee that an agent will recall every detail or retrieve the right entry without configuration.
What OKF Agent Memory is
OKF Agent Memory is a project from the OKF Memory organization, which describes it as deterministic, Git-native project memory for coding agents. The repository README describes it as a Go implementation based on Open Knowledge Format (OKF) v0.2. Its core pieces are three: a knowledge bundle of Markdown files stored in your repository, a command-line interface for working with that bundle, and an embedded stdio MCP server that agent environments can connect to.
The name can suggest a hardware or cloud service. It is neither. It is software that lives alongside your code, and its data is the same kind of text your repository already tracks.
Why a conversation is not a memory
A coding session accumulates context: the architecture you explained, the migration you ruled out, the naming convention the team settled on. When the session ends or the context window resets, most of that disappears. The next session starts from the files and whatever the agent can discover again.

The project’s convention document, OKF Agent Memory Convention v0.1 (status v0.1 Final), starts from the opposite assumption. It states: “An agent MUST assume that a future agent may have no access to the current conversation.” The consequence is that durable knowledge has to be written down deliberately, in a form a later agent can find, rather than left inside a transcript.
How the workflow is meant to run
The knowledge bundle sits in the repository, so it is versioned with the code it describes. The project’s tools can search the bundle, show an entry, create and update entries, relate entries to one another, and validate the whole set. Because the bundle is ordinary Git content, a teammate can review a change to a knowledge file in the same pull request flow they use for source code.
The convention recommends reviewing the knowledge after substantial work, so that what was learned in a session is captured as an entry rather than lost. That review step is part of the design. The tool does not decide on its own which facts from a session are worth keeping.

Setup, step by step
The project’s getting-started guide covers three installation routes and a bootstrap step. Exact package names, flags and file contents change between releases, so use the current guide for your operating system, release and agent before running anything.
1. Install the binary
- Homebrew on macOS or Linux.
- Precompiled release binaries from the project’s releases.
- Build from source with Go 1.22 or newer.
2. Bootstrap the repository
Run the bootstrap step in an existing repository or a new one. According to the getting-started guide, it creates:
- a
knowledge/bundle, the Markdown corpus itself; - agent skill materials that tell an agent how to use the bundle;
- an
AGENTS.mdfile with instructions for agents working in the repository; - Makefile shortcuts for common tasks.
Review these files before committing them, because they set the instructions your agents will follow.
3. Validate the bundle
The guide demonstrates strict validation of the knowledge bundle. Run it after every batch of edits, and treat a failure as a reason to fix the entry before the next session relies on it.
4. Connect your agent
The guide shows configuration examples for agent environments, using either the embedded stdio MCP server or direct CLI commands. The table below summarises the two routes.

Performance and token claims
The project’s organization materials and repository README report that retrieval takes below 300 microseconds, and the README also gives a token-reduction range. These are figures the project publishes about its own software. The materials do not include the hardware, corpus size or test method behind them, and I have not independently verified them. The publication date for the latency figure is also not stated in the material I could check, so do not treat it as a dated measurement. If performance matters to your decision, run a benchmark on a repository like yours.
License and sponsorship
The repository README identifies OKF Agent Memory as MIT licensed and invites users to consider sponsoring development. Confirm the license in the repository itself before you add the project to a production dependency review, since licenses can change. How to compare it with other memory approaches
There is no neutral head-to-head comparison of OKF Agent Memory with other approaches, so judge alternatives on the same criteria:
- Where state lives: files in your repository versus a hosted or external store.
- Inspectability: whether you can read, diff and revert memory in Git.
- Integration: CLI and MCP access here, versus platform-specific hooks elsewhere.
- Setup and upkeep: who writes and reviews entries, and how often.
- Data flow: what leaves your machine, if anything, and to which service.
- Supported agents: whether your agent is covered by a current configuration guide.
- Independently measured retrieval quality and latency: not established for this project.
Practical limits to plan around
- Installation requirements, such as the Go version for source builds, are version-sensitive. Follow the guide that matches your release.
- The memory is only as useful as the entries written into it. An empty or stale bundle gives an agent nothing to find.
- Agent configuration is per environment. A bundle that validates cleanly still needs the MCP server or CLI wired into the agent you use.
- Knowledge files are shared content. Anything an agent records in them becomes visible to everyone with repository access, so keep secrets out of entries.
The Bottom Line
OKF Agent Memory is a practical choice if you want project knowledge stored as reviewable Markdown in your repository and you are willing to maintain it as part of normal development. It is a weaker fit if you need automatic capture of everything a session produces, or if you need performance figures that someone other than the project has measured.
