For a coding tutorial stream intended to run around the clock, set OBS to CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing before going live; these settings help meet its encoder guidance, but they cannot guarantee nonstop uptime.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live

In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, and configure the streaming output. Labels may vary slightly by OBS version and encoder.

Setting Recommended choice Why it matters
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) Keeps the stream at a steady target bitrate, as YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 YouTube accepts these for RTMP/RTMPS. If using H.265 or AV1, consult YouTube’s bitrate table because its recommended figures differ from H.264.
Frames per second 30 or 60 fps, as appropriate YouTube lists rates up to 60 fps. Choose 60 only if the extra smoothness for cursor movement or demonstrations is useful and your setup can sustain it.
Resolution 1080p or 720p, based on readability and connection capacity Code text must remain legible at the viewer’s display size; a lower resolution can be preferable to an unstable stream.

For YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS endpoint, prefer RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts stream data on the way to and through Google’s servers. In OBS, use the platform’s YouTube integration or select YouTube as the service and use the server/stream key details provided by YouTube. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Choose bitrate for the resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended and minimum ingest bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can reliably deliver them.

Output YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate YouTube minimum H.264 bitrate
1080p, 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps

Set the bitrate in OBS under Settings > Output > Streaming. Test your upload speed and leave headroom rather than setting OBS at the full measured result: other network use and fluctuations can interrupt delivery. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended rate, choose a lower output or bitrate and test it under realistic conditions. The recommended rate is not a target to force regardless of network capacity.

Make code readable without overloading the setup

Resolution and frame rate are trade-offs, not quality badges. For a mostly static code editor, 30 fps is often a sensible starting point; rapid scrolling, cursor movement, or animated demos may make 60 fps worthwhile. Compare the actual editor text at the size viewers are likely to watch. A 720p feed that remains stable and readable can serve the tutorial better than a higher-resolution feed that drops frames.

In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate in Settings > Video. Choose a base canvas that matches your capture layout, then set the output resolution to the size you intend to send. Select a frame rate consistent with the tutorial’s motion and your computer’s capacity. The available platform guidance does not establish whether software encoding or a particular hardware encoder is best for your computer; choose an encoder it can sustain while capturing the editor and any demonstrations.

Configure the YouTube broadcast and test it

  1. Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream key or connect the account through OBS. Use the key assigned to that broadcast or a persistent key only if that is how you intend to manage recurring streams. Do not publish the key.
  2. Enter the output settings in OBS. Under Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or configure the supplied RTMPS server and stream key. Under Settings > Output, apply CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then set a bitrate appropriate to the codec, output size, and frame rate.
  3. Check the video and audio sources. Confirm the code editor is legible, the correct screen or window is captured, and microphone or system audio is routed as intended. Avoid exposing private messages, credentials, or other sensitive information in a desktop capture.
  4. Run a representative test. Before the real broadcast, test with audio and screen movement similar to the planned tutorial. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. Watch stream health while live. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and read its messages. If health worsens, check the available upload capacity, OBS dropped frames, encoder load, and whether a lower bitrate or output setting is needed.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer output formats, as the OBS Project also notes. That helps viewers receive different playback options, but it does not keep your computer, network, or encoder running if they fail.

What OBS settings can—and cannot—do for a 24/7 stream

OBS can send a correctly configured feed while the computer and connection remain operational. The settings above reduce avoidable encoder and ingest mismatches; they do not create a continuous-uptime guarantee. A nonstop schedule also depends on the computer staying powered, the encoder continuing to run, and the internet connection remaining available. The technical guidance cited here does not establish an uptime guarantee or specify hardware suitable for every 24/7 coding stream.

For a self-hosted setup, plan for power and internet interruptions, software or operating-system restarts, and unattended failures. An Ethernet connection may be a useful setup option, but it is not a requirement established by YouTube’s guidance and does not guarantee that outages will stop.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

Symptom Likely checks Practical response
YouTube reports an unstable or poor stream Available upload capacity, current OBS bitrate, competing network traffic Run an upload speed test, reduce bitrate or output resolution if needed, and test again with a margin for fluctuations.
Stream key or connection is rejected Service selection, RTMPS/server details, key copied from the intended YouTube broadcast Recheck the server and key in YouTube Studio and OBS. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio rather than continuing to use it.
Code looks blurry or hard to read Output resolution, scaling, editor zoom, bitrate, viewer display size Increase editor font size and inspect the stream at its intended viewing size. Raise resolution only if your encoder and connection can sustain it.
Motion stutters or frames are dropped Encoder load, output frame rate, bitrate stability, network or computer capacity Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Try 30 fps, a lower output resolution, or an encoder setting the computer can sustain, then repeat the representative test.
Audio is missing or incorrect OBS audio source selection, mute state, meter activity, monitoring/routing Check source meters and perform a private or unlisted test where appropriate before the public broadcast.

Keep tutorial content and channel policies in view

Technical compliance does not make content permissible or monetizable by itself. Use code, music, demonstrations, and other material you have the rights to use, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast. A stream that repeats material is not automatically eligible for monetization; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current monetization policies rather than assuming that continuous playback is sufficient.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded coding tutorial loop rather than a live camera or interactive lesson, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasting. See StreamNeo or estimate upload time before moving a large recording library. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
