Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Linux, add it to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, set YouTube as the stream destination, and use output settings your connection can sustain. A looping source does not keep a broadcast online by itself: OBS, the computer, the network, and YouTube’s ingest connection must all keep working. Test the full setup before relying on a long stream.
Install OBS and choose how to play the video
Install OBS Studio using the route supported for your Linux distribution. OBS Project documentation lists Flatpak and Ubuntu builds and recommends Flatpak for non-Ubuntu distributions: OBS Studio on Linux.
Loop one video file
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a source, then browse to the local video file.
- Enable Loop and confirm. OBS supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
The file restarts when playback reaches its end. If the source is hidden or removed, or OBS stops sending, the loop setting cannot keep the YouTube broadcast alive.
Loop a playlist
For a sequence of clips, add a VLC Video source instead and add the files to its playlist. VLC must be installed for this source type to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Check both settings to get the intended order or shuffle behavior. See the OBS media sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream key; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube – RTMPS if available, and connect or enter the stream key as prompted. If configuring the server manually, use the RTMPS endpoint and application path supplied for your YouTube stream.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube’s live preview and status before making the broadcast public or relying on it.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Its guidance specifies an RTMPS protocol URL, a valid endpoint and application path, and port 443. Do not substitute an endpoint or stream key from an unrelated stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion protocol documentation.
Set encoder output to match the source and connection
Open Settings > Output in OBS, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and configure the streaming encoder. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to a sensible match for the prerecorded file and the upload connection. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution source just to select a larger output.

Core YouTube encoder settings
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for live video. Choose an option your OBS encoder and hardware support reliably.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz stereo sampling.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Keep the output at or below the source frame rate unless there is a specific reason to change it.
For H.264, YouTube’s bitrate recommendations include the following values (publication year not stated):
| Output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your Linux system or internet connection can sustain the stream. Leave headroom: the upload connection must carry the configured stream continuously, not just reach that speed briefly. If OBS reports dropped frames or the connection cannot hold the target bitrate, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. YouTube’s full guidance is at YouTube Live encoder settings and its bitrate recommendations.

Test before leaving a stream running
- Use the actual video or playlist, target OBS settings, and the internet connection intended for the broadcast.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise non-public test stream and confirm that YouTube receives video and audio.
- Watch long enough to verify that the clip restarts, the playlist behaves as intended, and OBS reports no persistent connection or rendering problems.
- Check the YouTube live preview and OBS statistics for dropped frames or other signs that the setup cannot sustain the chosen output.
- Only then begin the intended public broadcast. OBS recommends testing settings and stream performance before a first live stream: OBS streaming guide.
Plan for broadcasts longer than 12 hours
A media source can keep looping while OBS sends video, but a very long YouTube stream is not a dependable way to preserve a complete replay. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Rewind (DVR) may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
If a replay matters, end and restart the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, and make a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends local recording for this purpose, but does not prescribe a particular drive capacity or model. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and its DVR guidance.

Check rights and monetization before looping
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to transmit the video and its music live, and for any resulting archive. A clip that is permitted for personal playback is not automatically cleared for a public live stream or saved VOD. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and confirm your permissions for both uses.
Technical ability to repeat a video does not mean the stream will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common loop and connection problems
- The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, use VLC Video and check Loop Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS, and check that VLC and OBS have matching architectures; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the selected YouTube RTMPS service, the endpoint and application path if entered manually, port 443 availability, and the stream key. Generate or copy the correct key in YouTube Studio if needed.
- OBS shows dropped frames: The connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. Test a lower bitrate or output resolution/frame rate, then repeat the full test.
- The stream ends or the archive is incomplete: OBS looping does not prevent power, network, software, or YouTube ingest interruptions. For a recording that matters, keep a local recording and schedule shorter broadcasts rather than depending on a stream beyond 12 hours.
