For a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream in OBS, choose a hardware encoder supported by your computer, set the streaming output to CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and match the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then test the actual feed and monitor YouTube’s stream health; these settings do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Set up OBS for YouTube’s live encoder requirements
- Choose the streaming encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the Streaming output. Select a hardware encoder available in your OBS build and system. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox options; availability depends on hardware and operating system. OBS generally advises choosing NVENC or AMF when you have a corresponding NVIDIA or AMD GPU rather than defaulting to Intel QSV. OBS hardware encoding documentation lists compatibility considerations.
- Set rate control to CBR. For the live streaming encoder, choose constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; do not carry recording-oriented rate-control advice over to the live output.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds, and OBS’s NVENC examples also use two seconds. In the encoder controls, set the interval to 2 seconds.
- Choose a codec and bitrate for the output resolution and frame rate. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingestion. The following are examples from YouTube Help’s SDR recommendations; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that your encoder or network can sustain the stream.
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication year (accessed 2026). Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current table and other resolutions or frame rates. Use a codec only if both the installed OBS version and the system’s hardware expose it.
- Check picture and audio format. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance calls for progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, AAC or MP3 audio, and 128 Kbps stereo audio; it lists up to 60 fps. Set the OBS output to match your intended stream format.
- Configure YouTube ingest. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key for the live stream. Enter these in OBS’s stream configuration so the encoder feed reaches the intended broadcast. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it, and reset it through YouTube if it is exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps for the current Live Control Room workflow.
Keep live settings separate from recording settings
OBS’s advanced recording guide uses recording examples such as constant-QP (CQP) for NVENC. Those settings address local recording, not YouTube’s live ingestion requirement for CBR. Configure the Streaming output independently; recording presets are not universal prescriptions for a live stream. OBS says its additional NVENC controls were introduced in version 31.0, and the available options vary by codec and use case. Treat those advanced controls as optional rather than prerequisites for a stable continuous feed. See the OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide and OBS Advanced NVENC Options.
Make sure the connection can sustain the stream
Use an upload connection with enough capacity for the selected bitrate and leave room for variation. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; for example, a feed set to 10 Mbps calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that guideline. The figure is YouTube Help guidance, not a measured guarantee. Account for other devices and applications using the connection, and for any primary and backup feeds. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test using audio and on-screen motion similar to the real playlist; a static test image may not reveal the same encoding or network issues.
- Preview the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it as a continuous broadcast.
- Monitor stream health and messages during the test and operation. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for an unstable connection or interruptions in power, hardware, or software.
Troubleshoot common settings problems
- OBS does not show the encoder you expect: hardware encoder options depend on the GPU, operating system, drivers, and OBS build. Confirm that the hardware and installed OBS version support the codec, and choose another available supported encoder if needed.
- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient bitrate: check that the streaming output is CBR, compare its bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec and output, and verify available upload capacity with headroom. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- The stream does not meet keyframe guidance: set the streaming keyframe interval to two seconds and verify that you changed the live output, not only recording settings.
- The broadcast is not receiving the OBS feed: confirm that the stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube live stream, then check Live Control Room for stream status and messages. If the key may have been exposed, reset it.
- The test looks fine but the 24/7 run later drops: a successful short test does not establish continuous reliability. Check YouTube stream-health messages, OBS status, network interruptions, shared upload use, and whether the computer or encoder remains available.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and connection running around the clock is not practical, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos or a playlist: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the StreamNeo free day.
