What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, OBS’s streaming dropped frames counter points to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server—not to a slow disk. First check which OBS statistic is rising. Rendering or encoding lag calls for a different diagnosis, while disk activity is worth investigating only if the evidence points to a local media source or storage contention.
First clarify what “YouTube video loop” means
The phrase can describe different setups, and they need different fixes:
- A local video file looping in OBS: OBS plays the file through a Media Source or a VLC Video source. This can involve disk reads.
- A YouTube page captured in OBS: OBS captures a browser, window, or display; the page’s playback and capture add different variables.
- Watching YouTube while troubleshooting: buffering in a browser is a viewer playback issue, not automatically an OBS stream problem.
- Sending an OBS production to YouTube Live: OBS’s streaming dropped-frame statistic concerns the connection from OBS to the remote ingest server.
OBS documents looping for local Media Sources and playlist looping for VLC Video sources. That confirms the feature, but does not mean looping itself causes dropped frames. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Identify the OBS statistic before changing anything
- Open OBS’s View > Stats window, start or reproduce the problem, and note exactly which counter changes. Check the current OBS log as well if you need to correlate the event with a source or output warning.
- If Dropped Frames (Network) rises, investigate the connection and stream bitrate first. OBS defines streaming dropped frames as a connection problem: the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Follow the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- If Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag rises, investigate system load, scene complexity, GPU/rendering capacity, encoder workload, output resolution, and frame rate. These are separate from network dropped frames; use the OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.
- If no OBS counter rises but a YouTube video buffers for you in a browser or app, troubleshoot viewer playback separately using YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
Do not use a YouTube viewer playback recommendation as a bitrate target for an OBS live stream. For example, a recommendation aimed at HD playback on a TV does not establish what bitrate OBS needs or whether a computer’s drive is limiting it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When disk read speed is a plausible lead
A local looping file makes disk activity relevant, but disk speed is not the default explanation for OBS’s network dropped-frame counter. Consider storage only when the source is local and observations suggest a playback or system-performance stall—for example, the issue coincides with heavy competing disk activity or the local source itself stutters.
An OBS Studio issue report describes one specific test in which other disk use coincided with increased Media Source CPU use. It is a case to investigate, not proof that a slow drive is causing your problem or that replacing it with an SSD will fix it: OBS Studio issue #2925.

Test a local looping source without guessing
- Confirm the source type. In the relevant scene, determine whether the video is a local Media Source, a VLC playlist, or a captured YouTube page. Note where a local file is stored.
- Reproduce the same loop and watch the counters. Keep the scene and output settings consistent, then record whether network dropped frames, rendering lag, encoding lag, or none of them increases.
- Check for contention. Observe disk activity and note whether other disk-heavy work is running while the problem occurs. Avoid treating high activity alone as proof; compare it with the timing of the source stall and OBS counter.
- Compare under controlled conditions. Stop background disk-heavy tasks and repeat the same playback. If practical, test the same file from another drive while keeping the OBS scene and stream settings unchanged.
- Act on the result. If only network dropped frames rise, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting path. If rendering or encoding lag rises, reduce the relevant system or scene workload. Consider a storage change only if a controlled comparison supports a drive or source-path bottleneck.
Before buying storage, check what drive interface and capacity your computer supports. The information available here does not establish a suitable drive for an unknown computer, and an SSD is not a universal fix for streaming drops.
Choose the diagnostic path that matches the symptom
| What changes or happens | Most relevant path | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS streaming dropped-frame count rises | Network/ingest | Connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate; use OBS’s connection guide. |
| OBS rendering or encoding lag rises | System performance | GPU and rendering load, scene complexity, encoder workload, output resolution, and frame rate; use OBS’s performance guide. |
| A local file stutters and disk-heavy activity overlaps | Local media and storage interaction | Media Source or VLC setup, disk activity, competing processes, and a controlled comparison using the same file. |
| YouTube playback buffers, but that is not reflected in OBS’s counters | Viewer playback | Connection, playback quality, app or browser, and device using YouTube’s playback guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS-on-your-computer setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
