Choose Wordle if you enjoy using letter-by-letter feedback to find one five-letter word in six tries or fewer. Choose Connections if you prefer spotting a shared theme among words and testing possible groups. Neither is objectively harder or more rewarding for everyone; the better fit depends on how you like to solve.
How do Wordle and Connections differ?
| Puzzle | What you do | What the rules make you focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Wordle | Guess a five-letter word in up to six tries. | Use feedback from your guesses to narrow the possible word. |
| Connections | Find themes linking words and group words by those themes. | Look for semantic associations, form category ideas, and test whether words belong together. |
The New York Times Games App Store listing describes Wordle as a five-letter word-guessing game with six tries. The NYT Help Center describes Connections as a word game about finding themes between words. The thinking-style differences follow from those rules; they are not evidence that either puzzle improves a particular cognitive skill.
Which puzzle suits your style?
Choose Wordle if you like a clear target
Wordle gives you one objective: identify the hidden word. Each guess provides information to work with, so it may suit you if you enjoy narrowing possibilities, making a plan from feedback, and keeping track of a limited number of attempts.
Choose Connections if you like interpreting clues
Connections is a better fit if you enjoy noticing relationships that are not always obvious at first glance. You form possible categories, decide which words fit, and test those groupings. Its categories have different levels of difficulty, and the game’s stats interface includes a mistake histogram, according to the NYT Help Center.

How much does a wrong answer matter?
Wordle’s rules set a ceiling of six guesses. Connections also makes mistakes visible in its statistics, but the help material cited here does not establish the current exact mistake limit. If a strict, clearly stated attempt count is important to you, Wordle’s six-guess rule is the more definite constraint.
