Both are daily New York Times games listed as playable without a Games subscription, but they reward different ways of thinking and offer different options for extra play.
How are Connections and Wordle different?

NYT describes Connections as a game that challenges players to “find themes between words.” Its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary, while arranging the board so that words may suggest more than one possible connection.
What kind of thinking does each game reward?
Connections: group words, then test the pattern
Connections asks you to spot relationships across a whole board rather than work toward one hidden answer. A useful approach is to identify a possible group, then check whether all four words fit the same theme and whether another word could be a stronger match. The deliberately tempting overlaps make it important to verify a category before committing.
Wordle: narrow down one answer
Wordle focuses on one five-letter answer and limits you to six chances. Its central challenge is using each guess to narrow the possibilities while staying within that fixed allowance.

Which is harder, Connections or Wordle?
Neither game is objectively harder based on the NYT descriptions. Connections emphasizes finding categories and resisting plausible false groupings; Wordle emphasizes narrowing down a hidden word within a fixed number of guesses. Which feels tougher depends on whether you prefer spotting relationships among many words or solving toward one answer.
Can you play both games for free?
Yes. NYT lists both Connections and Wordle among its daily games available without a qualifying Games subscription. Connections is free to play on NYT platforms and does not require registration or sign-in; signing in lets you retain progress across devices. Its daily puzzle becomes available at midnight in your timezone.

The NYT Help Center says Connections is available on the NYT Games website, The Athletic site, and the NYT News and Games apps. Availability can depend on the platform you use.

The clearest extra for Connections players is archive access. All Access and Games subscribers can play archived Connections puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023. Archived games count toward some completed-puzzle and win-rate-related statistics, but they do not count toward streaks. The reviewed sources do not establish a comparable Wordle archive entitlement.
