The department also reported 118 false positives and 12 knives across 2,749 scans at 20 stations, according to the Associated Press. Those results raise questions about the pilot, but they do not by themselves establish the system’s overall accuracy or whether it made the subway safer.
What did the subway scanner pilot find?
NYPD’s reported results covered 2,749 scans across 20 subway stations during a 30-day pilot. The department reported zero firearm detections, 118 false positives, and 12 knives. The Associated Press calculated that the false positives amounted to 4.29% of scans. Associated Press, October 24, 2024
“Zero guns detected” describes what the system reportedly flagged during this sample. It does not show that no scanned riders carried firearms: the public summary does not provide independent ground truth about what weapons were present, including weapons the system may have missed.
Why the results do not prove the scanners failed—or worked
The reported counts are a limited operational snapshot, not a full accuracy study. Without a reliable account of which scanned riders actually carried weapons, it is not possible to calculate how many firearms the system missed or its sensitivity. The figures also do not establish a firearm prevalence rate among riders.

False positives indicate scans that prompted an alert without the reported detection corresponding to a weapon. The 118 alerts matter to the practical experience of screening, but the summary does not explain how they were investigated or resolved. It also omits scan duration, staffing, rider refusals, and whether the knives found were legal or prohibited.
For the same reasons, the reported results cannot show whether screening reduced violence or improved rider safety, or establish the pilot’s net security benefit, labor cost, or effect on subway operations. A meaningful comparison with another screening method would need consistent information about test conditions, weapons detected and missed, false alarms, throughput, refusals, staffing, cost, privacy rules, and safety outcomes. What the city said about the pilot and rider scans
In March 2024, the city announced a 90-day waiting period to identify vendors and pilot technology intended to prevent firearms and other weapons from entering the transit system. Evolv equipment was demonstrated at that announcement; the demonstration should not be mistaken for the later pilot or for a permanent systemwide deployment. New York City Mayor’s Office, March 2024

What the Evolv scrutiny does—and does not—show
The Associated Press’s October 2024 account also noted federal regulatory scrutiny and investor litigation allegations involving Evolv. Those are separate matters and should not be treated as proof of how the NYC pilot performed.
