It is designed to let a product combine Wi-Fi networking with Bluetooth functions and Thread or Zigbee mesh networking; the 802.15.4 and Wi-Fi capabilities can also support products that connect Matter devices using either transport. It is a component for product designers, not a standalone consumer hub or a guarantee that a finished product is Matter-certified.
What the NXP IW612 is
NXP announced the IW612 on January 4, 2022, describing it as a secure tri-radio device for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and 802.15.4. NXP’s current product page describes a dual-band 2.4/5 GHz, 1×1 Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and 802.15.4 single-chip solution. The current data sheet clarifies the Bluetooth-version distinction: the device supports Bluetooth 5.2 features and is Bluetooth 5.4 certified.
That distinction matters when comparing documentation or a board listing. “Bluetooth 5.2” reflects the 2022 launch description; newer product documentation lists Bluetooth 5.4 certification while retaining support for 5.2 features. Check the documentation for the specific module or finished product rather than assuming every listing describes the same software, certification status or feature set.
What simultaneous radio operation means
The IW612 is built to coordinate three radio systems in one product. NXP’s 2022 launch release says it enables simultaneous transmit and receive. The 2025 data sheet specifically documents simultaneous receive with Bluetooth and 802.15.4 while Wi-Fi is active. These capabilities are intended to help a design keep Wi-Fi connectivity available while using Bluetooth or a low-power mesh radio, without automatically requiring three separate radio chips.

Simultaneous operation does not mean every radio can transmit and receive without restriction in every configuration. Actual behavior depends on radio coexistence, antenna and board design, host software, power and thermal limits, and the product’s selected modes. For a design that depends on a particular three-radio workload, confirm that workload against the relevant data sheet, software package and reference design.
How the radios map to Matter, Thread and Zigbee
Matter is an application-layer standard, not a fourth radio. Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi or Thread, while Bluetooth LE is commonly used for commissioning and can also support Bluetooth functions such as audio. The IW612’s Wi-Fi subsystem supports Matter over Wi-Fi; its 802.15.4 subsystem supports Thread and Zigbee, including mesh functions. This combination can serve in a product intended to connect Matter-over-Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Thread devices and expose those networks to an IP host.

NXP’s January 4, 2022 announcement said, “Additionally, the IW612 enables communication between Matter devices regardless of whether the devices use Wi-Fi or Thread.” That describes the chip’s intended role in a larger design. It does not mean that the IW612 alone is a Matter controller, border router or certified consumer device: those functions require the appropriate host, software and finished-product implementation.
Radio capabilities and host connections
| Subsystem | Documented capabilities | Host connection |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Dual-band 2.4/5 GHz, 1×1 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), channels up to 80 MHz, WPA2/WPA3, and integrated RF components. The 2025 NXP data sheet specifies a peak data rate up to 480 Mbps and transmit power up to +21 dBm. | SDIO 3.0 |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.2 features; the current data sheet lists Bluetooth 5.4 certification, LE 2 Mbps, long range, advertising extensions, and LE Audio/isochronous channels. The 2025 data sheet specifies transmit power up to +19 dBm for Bluetooth LE/BDR. | UART |
| 802.15.4 | Thread, Zigbee and Dual PAN mesh functions. It shares RF resources with Bluetooth and supports simultaneous receive with Bluetooth. | SPI |
The peak Wi-Fi rate and transmit-power values above are maxima stated in NXP’s 2025 data sheet, not guaranteed application throughput or a measurement of a particular module. Real results depend on implementation and operating conditions. The interfaces also shape the host architecture: the design has separate documented connections for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 802.15.4 rather than a single host link for all three.

Security and RF integration
NXP describes security features including secure boot, secure firmware update, key generation and lifecycle management, and hardware encryption. Those features can support a product’s security architecture, but they do not by themselves certify the finished product or ensure that its firmware, key handling and update process are secure. The integrator remains responsible for implementing and validating the complete system.
The chip incorporates RF front-end functions, including power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers and switches, according to NXP. Integration can reduce external component count and board complexity, but it does not remove antenna, RF-layout, coexistence or regulatory-design work. A product still needs an appropriate antenna arrangement and finished-device approvals for its intended markets.

Where an IW612-based design may fit
NXP lists the IW612 for smart speakers and displays, streaming and OTT devices, televisions, gateways, hubs and bridges, security systems, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, smart outlets, appliances, industrial automation and smart lighting. These are application categories for a connectivity building block, not evidence that a specific retail product contains the chip or supports every listed function.
The clearest fit is a product that benefits from Wi-Fi IP connectivity, Bluetooth functionality or commissioning, and a Thread or Zigbee mesh radio in one design. Potential examples include a smart-home hub connecting Matter-over-Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Thread devices, or an entertainment device that needs Wi-Fi alongside Bluetooth. The required software roles and radio behavior must still be validated for the particular product.

How to evaluate an IW612 design or module
NXP’s current product page names AzureWave AW-PU600 and AW-XH320 as partner modules. Module availability, exact configuration, included firmware, certification status and sales channel can change, so verify the model and documentation with the module supplier before choosing it. A module is not interchangeable with bare-chip documentation in every design decision.
Before selecting the chip or a module, check these design requirements:
- Concurrency: Confirm whether the product needs all three radio systems active at once, and validate its exact transmit/receive pattern against the documented coexistence behavior.
- Wi-Fi: Check required band, channel width, throughput and latency, along with WPA3 and other security requirements.
- Bluetooth: Match the needed audio, commissioning, LE range, data-rate and advertising features to the documented support and certification.
- Mesh and Matter roles: Establish whether the product needs Thread, Zigbee, Matter-over-Wi-Fi, Matter-over-Thread, a controller, a border router, or some combination.
- Host architecture: Plan for SDIO 3.0 for Wi-Fi, UART for Bluetooth and SPI for 802.15.4, and check that the host processor and software stack support the intended design.
- RF and power: Review antenna placement, RF layout, coexistence, power modes, thermal limits and the impact of the integrated front end in the finished board.
- Product readiness: Verify software and reference-board support, module identity, regulatory approvals and any finished-product security or Matter certification needed for the target market.
NXP called the IW612 the “industry’s first” secure tri-radio device in its January 4, 2022 launch release; that is NXP’s attributed launch claim, not an independent market comparison. The practical decision is whether its radio mix, host interfaces and supported design path meet the product’s requirements.
