NVIDIA raised the US price of the SHIELD TV Pro to $299 on October 2, 2026, up from a reported launch price of $199.99 in 2019. That is about $100 more, or roughly 50% in nominal dollars. NVIDIA says component costs, including memory, have risen substantially across the industry. The increase is striking for seven-year-old hardware, but the available evidence does not show how much memory contributes to the device’s cost—or prove that NVIDIA’s AI business caused this specific increase.

What changed in the SHIELD TV Pro price?

Ars Technica reported the new US price as $299, effective October 2, 2026, and NVIDIA’s US product page lists the device at $299. Ars gives the previous price as $199.99; NVIDIA’s October 2019 launch announcement listed the Pro at $199. On the $199.99 comparison, the increase is about $100, or approximately 50%. This is a nominal list-price comparison, not an inflation-adjusted one. Ars Technica’s report and NVIDIA’s US product page provide the current price context.

Why does NVIDIA say the price went up?

An NVIDIA spokesperson told Ars Technica: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry,” Ars Technica, October 2, 2026.

That is the company’s explanation, not a published cost breakdown. The report does not show the SHIELD’s bill of materials, the share of its cost attributable to memory, or how much of the increase reflects costs rather than other pricing decisions. Consumers can reasonably ask for more detail, but the public information does not let them calculate a memory-driven share of the $100 increase.

Did NVIDIA’s AI business cause the increase?

The irony is understandable: NVIDIA is a major player in AI computing, while the company cites industry-wide component costs that include memory to explain a higher price for a consumer device. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement also presented AI as part of its computing work and highlighted AI-powered upscaling on the SHIELD. Those facts make the tension a fair subject for criticism. NVIDIA’s launch announcement

But irony is not proof of causation. Neither the Ars report nor NVIDIA’s announcement quantifies NVIDIA’s contribution to memory-market prices or establishes that demand from its AI business caused the SHIELD Pro’s component costs to rise. It is fair to criticize the company for asking customers to pay 50% more for an old product while giving only a broad cost explanation; it would go beyond the evidence to say NVIDIA itself caused this particular price increase.

What does $299 buy?

The SHIELD TV Pro has a feature set that remains more specialized than a basic streaming stick. NVIDIA’s specification page lists a Tegra X1+ processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, a 256-core GPU, Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, and AI upscaling to 4K at up to 60 frames per second. It also lists Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b, two USB 3.0 ports, Android 11 with Android TV, and GeForce NOW support. NVIDIA says users can expand storage with USB flash drives or hard drives. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. NVIDIA SHIELD TV specifications

The practical value depends on which of those features you will use. USB storage expansion and Plex Media Server functions may matter to someone managing local media or a home server; they are less persuasive for someone who only wants mainstream streaming apps. The hardware is seven years old, so buyers should weigh the listed features against the price rather than assume age alone makes it unsuitable—or that its specifications justify the new price for everyone.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro worth $299?

At $299, it is difficult to recommend as a default streaming device. The case is strongest for a buyer who specifically wants the Pro’s combination of USB expansion, Plex Media Server capability, Gigabit Ethernet, supported HDR formats, or GeForce NOW. If your needs are ordinary app-based streaming, paying more for functions you will not use is hard to justify. Check the current street price and confirm that the apps and formats you rely on are supported before buying.

There are alternatives to investigate, including the Google TV Streamer and Walmart Onn 4K Pro, both identified by Android Authority. This information does not establish their current prices or feature-by-feature equivalence with the SHIELD. Compare the exact features that matter to you: supported video and audio formats, software and app support, storage expansion, media-server use, and gaming. A lower price is useful only if the alternative meets your requirements.

What happened to the cheaper SHIELD model?

October reports say NVIDIA ended production of the base SHIELD model, making it a less dependable current option than before. In July, NVIDIA had said the base device was largely out of stock because of demand and that it had no update on future availability; that earlier statement did not announce discontinuation. Android Authority’s October report and its July report distinguish the later production news from the earlier stock update.
