The RTX 3050 can still make sense for modest 1080p gaming, but “RTX 3050” refers to two significantly different desktop cards. The 8GB version is the stronger gaming choice; the 6GB model trades performance for much lower power use and needs no supplemental GPU power connector. Neither is a safe buy on its name alone: check the exact model, benchmarks for the games you play, and its price against newer alternatives.

What does the RTX 3050 name cover?

NVIDIA’s desktop specifications distinguish an 8GB model from a 6GB model. The difference is not just memory capacity: the 6GB card also has fewer CUDA cores, a narrower memory interface, lower clock speed, and lower graphics-card power. Board-partner versions can vary, so verify the exact card rather than relying on a retailer title or a generic RTX 3050 review.

Reference specification RTX 3050 8GB RTX 3050 6GB
CUDA cores 2,560 2,304
Memory 8GB GDDR6 6GB GDDR6
Memory interface 128-bit 96-bit
Graphics-card power 130W 70W
NVIDIA recommended system power 550W 300W
Supplemental power connector One 8-pin connector None

These are NVIDIA reference figures, not a promise that every manufacturer’s card has the same clock speeds, dimensions, power limit, or connector. NVIDIA’s recommended system power is likewise a reference recommendation; check the requirements for the specific board and your PC. NVIDIA’s RTX 3050 specifications list the configurations and reference requirements.

How well does the RTX 3050 perform in games?

Expect a 1080p card, not a high-settings 1440p guarantee

The RTX 3050 was positioned primarily for 1080p gaming. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 review, the 8GB card averaged 44 fps at 1440p ultra across that review’s seven-game suite and stayed above 30 fps in each game tested. That is a dated, specific test result—not a prediction for current releases, every 1440p game, or the 6GB model. Newer, more demanding games may call for lower settings, upscaling, or a more powerful GPU.

msi Gaming RTX 3050 LP 6G OC Graphics Card (NVIDIA RTX 3050, 96-Bit, Boost Clock: 1492 MHz, 6GB GDDR6 14 Gbps, HDMI/DP, Ampere Architecture)
  • Chipset: GeForce RTX 3050
  • Boost Clock / Memory: 1492 MHz / 14 Gbps
  • Video Memory: 6GB GDDR6
  • Memory Interface: 96-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.1a x 2

The practical fit is straightforward: consider it for a budget 1080p PC if you are willing to tune settings, especially in newer games. For 1440p, demanding titles, or consistently high frame rates, look for benchmarks of the exact card in the games and settings you care about before buying.

The 8GB model is notably faster than the 6GB model

Tom’s Hardware reported TechPowerUp testing in 2024 that put the RTX 3050 8GB, on average, 28% ahead of the 6GB version at 1080p and 30% ahead at 1440p. Those averages describe that benchmark set; the gap in an individual game can differ. They do show why a review or listing that says only “RTX 3050” is not enough to judge performance.

Are ray tracing and DLSS useful on this card?

NVIDIA lists RT cores and DLSS support for the RTX 3050. Those are supported features, not a guarantee of smooth ray-traced gameplay. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 budget-GPU comparison, demanding ray tracing was a poor fit for the budget 8GB cards in the games tested. Treat ray tracing as something to evaluate title by title: check performance with it enabled, whether DLSS is available and helpful in that game, and whether the resulting image and frame rate suit you.

Should you buy, keep, or replace an RTX 3050?

Buying one

Buy only after identifying the exact 8GB or 6GB card and comparing its local price with alternatives such as the Radeon RX 6600, Intel Arc A750, and newer cards available where you live. Tom’s Hardware tested the RTX 3050 alongside the RX 6600 and Arc A750 in a 2025 comparison, but there is no universal winner independent of game, settings, price, power needs, and software requirements. Current stock and street prices are not established here, so use current local listings rather than historical review prices.

  • Compare the specific card’s game benchmarks, resolution, settings, average frame rate, and low-frame-rate results.
  • Check the exact board model’s power connector, dimensions, video outputs, and the clearance in your case.
  • Compare total value at the actual local price, including memory capacity, power requirements, warranty, and return policy.
  • For an Arc card, include its software and system requirements in the comparison; do not assume performance or compatibility is identical across PCs.

Keeping one you already own

If your RTX 3050 runs the games you play at acceptable settings and frame rates, there is no need to replace it just because it is an older generation. Adjust resolution, graphics quality, and ray tracing on a game-by-game basis. Upgrade when it no longer meets a concrete need—such as a target resolution, frame rate, or feature level—not simply because a newer model exists.

Upgrading

Compare an upgrade against your actual RTX 3050 variant and the games you play. A Tom’s Hardware search result from 2026 reports the RTX 5060 averaging roughly twice the RTX 3050’s 1080p performance in its own test suite, but the underlying article and methodology were not available for verification here. Treat that as a lead, not a reliable universal multiplier; consult the full benchmark methods and results before using it to choose an upgrade.

Will an RTX 3050 fit your PC?

Start with the exact board-partner model. Reference-card power and connector figures help frame the difference between variants, but add-in cards may differ in dimensions and requirements.

  1. Identify the configuration: confirm whether the listing is the 8GB or 6GB desktop card.
  2. Check the card’s stated power and connector: the NVIDIA reference 8GB model is rated at 130W and uses one 8-pin connector; the reference 6GB model is rated at 70W and has no supplemental connector.
  3. Check your PSU: NVIDIA recommends a 550W system for its 8GB reference card and 300W for its 6GB reference card. Confirm the exact board’s manufacturer requirements and make sure your PSU has the necessary connector; capacity alone does not confirm connector compatibility.
  4. Check physical fit: compare the card’s listed length, height, and slot thickness with your case and nearby components.
  5. Confirm the rest of the build: check display outputs against your monitor, and review the retailer’s warranty and return policy.

Verdict: how does the old-gen hold up?

The RTX 3050 remains a modest 1080p option, not a blanket recommendation for modern gaming. The 8GB model is the stronger gaming card; the 6GB version’s clearest advantage is its low 70W reference power and connector-free design. Whether either one is worthwhile depends on the exact board and a competitive local price. Compare real game results and system compatibility before buying, and keep an existing card if it still delivers the experience you want.
