Its integrated module delivers up to 248 INT8 TOPS, while the chassis adds high-speed networking, expansion, and system-management hardware. For a new long-lived design, however, account for NVIDIA’s software roadmap: IGX-SW 1.1.3 is the final general update in the 1.x branch, and NVIDIA strongly encourages new designs to use IGX Thor.
What is the NVIDIA IGX Orin Developer Kit?
IGX Orin is an industrial-grade edge-AI platform built around NVIDIA’s IGX Orin module. NVIDIA positions it for industrial and medical environments where developers may need local AI compute, high-bandwidth sensor processing, security features, and functional-safety capabilities. The Developer Kit packages the platform as a chassis-based development and test system rather than just a module.
Those platform capabilities do not certify an application or finished product. The kit is not, by itself, evidence that a medical device is cleared for clinical use or that a machine-control system is safe for a particular application. Those outcomes depend on the complete system, its design, validation, and applicable regulatory requirements. NVIDIA’s IGX platform information describes the intended markets and platform features.
What hardware and connections does the kit include?
The core compute comes from the IGX Orin module. NVIDIA’s product brief lists a 12-core Arm Cortex-A78AE CPU, an Ampere GPU with 2,048 CUDA cores and 64 Tensor Cores, two NVDLA 2.0 engines, and 64 GB of LPDDR5 memory. NVIDIA lists up to 248 INT8 TOPS for the module; this is the module’s stated figure, not a system total including an optional discrete GPU. The product brief is dated 2024-12-11 and labels its information preliminary and subject to change, so check the current product documentation when finalizing a design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The chassis broadens the kit’s usefulness for sensor-rich systems. NVIDIA’s materials list ConnectX-7 with two 100GbE QSFP28 ports, two RJ45 Ethernet ports, USB-A and USB-C, HDMI input, DisplayPort output, audio jacks, PCIe expansion, storage, a power supply, an NVIDIA BMC module, and a safety MCU. The kit is also described as having a chassis-mounted PCIe Gen5 slot for an optional discrete GPU.
Optional discrete GPUs
NVIDIA documents configurations with an optional RTX A6000 or RTX 6000 Ada. These are configuration choices, not standard inclusions in every Developer Kit. Because a discrete GPU changes the system configuration and performance picture, confirm the supported hardware combination and software stack with NVIDIA or the relevant distributor before specifying one. NVIDIA’s IGX product page and product brief and documentation provide platform details.

How much AI performance does IGX Orin provide?
For the IGX Orin module alone, NVIDIA specifies up to 248 INT8 TOPS. The module’s GPU has 2,048 CUDA cores and 64 Tensor Cores, alongside two NVDLA 2.0 engines. Treat these as manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results: real application performance depends on the model, precision, software, data movement, and workload.
Do not compare the module’s 248 INT8 TOPS directly with a higher figure for an IGX system configured with an optional RTX GPU. Such a system-level figure includes additional compute hardware and represents a different configuration. Evaluate the workload against the exact system you expect to buy and deploy.

What is the current software and lifecycle status?
NVIDIA’s IGX Download Center lists IGX-SW 1.1.3 as a production release dated 2026-08-18. NVIDIA says it addresses known security issues and is the last general software update in the IGX-SW 1.x branch. The same page strongly encourages new designs to use the IGX Thor family. This is a significant consideration for teams starting a new program; it does not, on its own, mean existing Orin systems stop working or that all support ends. Check the IGX Download Center for the current release information.
NVIDIA’s IGX product information states that the product family has a 10-year lifecycle and that the IGX Orin lineup will be offered until 2033. These are NVIDIA’s published lifecycle and availability statements, not guarantees of local inventory, availability of every configuration, or support terms from a particular distributor. See NVIDIA’s IGX developer page for current platform information.

Is IGX Orin the right fit for your project?
The kit is most relevant when a team needs a development platform with substantial integrated AI compute, high-speed networking, and industrial or medical edge-AI positioning. Assess the platform against the system you actually need to build rather than relying on a feature label alone.
- Compute: Determine whether the module’s stated performance meets the workload, or whether an optional GPU is needed. Account for the exact configuration and software support.
- Data movement: Map sensor throughput and network requirements to the kit’s ports and expansion options, including the two 100GbE QSFP28 connections.
- Safety, security, and compliance: Identify the requirements for the complete device or machine. Platform features do not replace application-level validation or regulatory approval.
- Software horizon: Weigh the final general IGX-SW 1.x update and NVIDIA’s recommendation of Thor for new designs against the needs of an existing Orin project.
- Deployment stage: Decide whether you need a development and test system or a production-ready embedded system supplied through an OEM.
IGX Thor is the closest comparison within NVIDIA’s product family, and NVIDIA currently highlights it for next-generation industrial, medical, and robotic workloads. The available product information does not establish a universal performance or value winner between Thor and Orin. Compare the workload, configuration, software, availability, and price for your specific project.

Where can you buy the Developer Kit?
NVIDIA directs buyers to official distributors for Developer Kits and to OEM partners for production systems. Its purchase information lists the IGX Orin Developer Kit as part number 940-23840-0001-000 for the US, Canada, China, Japan, and Taiwan. Distributor coverage and stock can vary by region, so confirm the local SKU and availability through NVIDIA’s IGX purchase information. NVIDIA’s cited channels include Arrow, PNY, Edom, Leadtek, Syntech, Macnica, and Ryoyo.
The development-to-production route is not simply to transfer the Developer Kit unchanged into a finished product. NVIDIA’s user guide directs customers to complete development and testing, then engage an OEM for product development; the OEM provides an IGX Orin Board Kit for production work. Consult the IGX Orin User Guide for that process.
