NotebookLM can turn your course materials into quizzes, flashcards, study guides, mind maps, and source-cited answers. But the claim that it “outperforms apps people pay $15 a month for” is not established: no competing apps, tasks, or test results are identified. Whether NotebookLM costs nothing—and which tools you can use—depends on your account and plan.
What NotebookLM can do with your study materials
NotebookLM, referred to as Gemini Notebook in Google’s newer materials, is designed to work with sources in a notebook. Add course material, then use the available study tools to explore and review it.
Generate study aids from uploaded sources
Google says NotebookLM can create quizzes and flashcards based exclusively on uploaded sources, along with study guides containing key terms and sample quiz or essay questions. Its chat can provide answers grounded in those sources, with inline citations that link back to relevant passages. That makes it easier to check where an answer came from; it does not, by itself, establish that the answer is correct or that the tools improve learning outcomes. Google for Education describes these features.
Explore relationships and other formats
Mind Maps can show relationships among a notebook’s sources and notes; users can zoom in and open concepts for summaries. Google also describes Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, and Guided Learning. Its student study announcement also covers source discovery and improved understanding of images and graphs in PDFs.

What is free, and what limits apply?
Google says consumer Google Account holders can use Gemini Notebook, and qualifying educational institutions can provide it free through an education tier. However, the published education limits should not be assumed to apply to every personal account or to every feature available during a rollout.
For the qualifying free education tier, Google lists the following limits:

Newer study tools are rolling out in stages
In an announcement dated September 15, 2026, Google said Gemini Notebook was adding several capabilities: real-time spoken conversations grounded in notebook sources, a mobile audio recorder for lectures and thoughts, interactive learning overviews combining summaries with study outputs, additional quiz formats, and short video overviews in more than 80 languages. Google described some of these features as rolling out in the near future or in stages, so availability may vary by account and timing. See Google’s September 15, 2026 update for its rollout information.

Does NotebookLM outperform apps that cost $15 a month?
There is not enough evidence to say. The headline’s comparison does not identify the paid apps, the study tasks, or what “outperform” means. Google’s product descriptions explain features, but they are not independent head-to-head tests. The reviewed material also does not establish a learning-outcome advantage for NotebookLM.
Similarity in features is not proof of superiority. A fair comparison would use the same study material and assess the same tasks in each named app:

- How well answers stay grounded in sources, and whether citations lead to relevant passages.
- Whether generated quizzes and flashcards are useful and editable.
- Support for active recall and ongoing review, rather than generating materials once.
- Availability across web and mobile, account eligibility, and usage limits.
- The actual price for the user’s region and billing term.
Without that comparison, students can assess whether NotebookLM’s documented source-based workflow meets their needs, but cannot conclude that it beats an unspecified paid app.

Google lists Google AI Pro for Education at $15 per user per month with a one-year commitment, or $24 per user per month when billed monthly. Those are prices for Google’s education add-on, not evidence that a competing consumer study app costs $15 or that NotebookLM outperforms it. See Google’s education pricing and plan details.

How to decide whether NotebookLM is enough
Start with your own course materials and the features available on your account. If source-cited chat, generated quizzes and flashcards, or study guides address your study needs, try that workflow before paying for another tool. If you need features or review workflows that NotebookLM does not provide on your plan, compare named alternatives using the same materials and criteria above, and verify each app’s current price and limits.
