Nordstrom does not publish one universal return deadline for ordinary purchases: it says returns are handled case by case, so acceptance is not guaranteed. For eligible U.S. purchases, you can start a free mail return online or bring the item to a Nordstrom store. Check the exceptions first—especially for fine jewelry, gift cards, car seats, boutique purchases, and Nordstrom Rack items.
What is Nordstrom’s return policy?
Nordstrom says it handles ordinary returns “on a case-by-case basis with the ultimate goal of making our customers happy.” Its current general policy does not specify a single deadline for all ordinary Nordstrom purchases. That is not a promise that an item can be returned at any time: Nordstrom decides whether to accept a return.

These general instructions apply to eligible Nordstrom purchases in the U.S. Some products, sellers, and purchase channels follow different rules. See Nordstrom’s current Returns & Exchanges policy before sending an item.
How to return a Nordstrom purchase
Return by mail in the U.S.
- Start the return from your Nordstrom account or order information online. If you do not have an account or cannot find the order details, use the alternate return-start instructions in Nordstrom’s FAQ.
- Choose the prepaid label or QR-code option provided for your return. Nordstrom no longer includes return labels in order packages. Print the label yourself, or show the QR code at an eligible USPS or FedEx location to have the label printed.
- Pack the correct item and attach the return label. Nordstrom warns that a misrouted item or one that does not meet its return criteria may not be returned or refunded.
- Allow 8–12 business days for mail-return processing. Nordstrom says the refund is expected 3–5 business days after processing; your financial institution may affect when the credit appears.
Return at a Nordstrom store
Bring the item to a Nordstrom store and ask for assistance at any register. Nordstrom’s FAQ advises bringing the receipt and the original form of payment. The policy gives an expectation of 3–5 business days for an in-store refund, though the time for a credit to post can depend on your financial institution.

Exchange an item
Nordstrom’s FAQ directs customers who want a replacement to order the item online or contact customer care for help. It does not promise a direct exchange transaction at a store counter.
How refunds work
- With a sales receipt: Nordstrom says it refunds to the original form of payment.
- With a gift receipt: The credit may go to the original tender or to a Nordstrom gift card. A gift return is credited on a gift card, according to Nordstrom’s FAQ.
- If you paid with a gift card: The credited amount is returned on a digital gift card.
- Without a record of sale: If Nordstrom chooses to refund the item, it may ask for identification and issue the current price on a Nordstrom gift card.
Nordstrom’s stated timelines are estimates rather than a guarantee of when a bank or card issuer will post the credit.

Exceptions that can change how or whether you can return an item
Items with special restrictions
- Gift cards: Cannot be returned.
- Fine jewelry: Cannot be returned by mail. Take it to a Nordstrom store with a Fine Jewelry department and bring your order confirmation and/or the card used for the purchase.
- Car seats and bases: Accepted for return only in their original, unopened boxes.
- Watchfinder & Co. pre-owned items bought from Nordstrom: Final sale; Nordstrom says they are not eligible for refunds or exchanges, overriding its general policy.
- Casper Bed: Contact Nordstrom for inquiries and assistance.
- Balsam Hill: Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of purchase or before December 25, whichever comes first. Nordstrom instructs customers to call for a label and says these products are not accepted in stores or through the ordinary mail-return methods. Confirm the shipping instructions with customer care before sending one.
Purchases made through a particular store, seller, or region
- Boutiques: Return the purchase to the store where you bought it.
- Nordstrom Rack: Eligible Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com merchandise may be returned at a Nordstrom Rack location, but fine jewelry and designer items are excluded. Boutique purchases must go to the original boutique, and Canadian purchases cannot be returned at U.S. locations. Nordstrom Rack purchases follow Rack’s own policy; do not assume Nordstrom’s general terms or deadline apply.
- International Nordstrom.com orders: These use a different process. Orders handled through Borderfree or ESW do not qualify for free returns or merchandise exchanges. Follow the instructions for your country and order.
- Third-party seller orders: Seller purchases can have their own return-by dates and condition requirements. Check the order history for the applicable instructions rather than relying on Nordstrom’s general policy.
