Noise-isolating headphones reduce sound with a physical barrier or seal; noise-canceling headphones add electronics—usually active noise cancellation (ANC)—to reduce some ambient sound. Most consumer ANC headphones use both methods. ANC is most useful against steady, low-frequency noise such as an engine or air-conditioning hum, but it will not make every sound disappear.
How noise isolation and noise cancellation work
Noise isolation is physical
Noise isolation—also called passive noise reduction—comes from the headphone’s construction. Closed ear cups and padding cover the ears, while in-ear headphones use tips that seal the ear canal. That barrier reduces sound reaching the listener without microphones or electronic processing. How well it works depends in part on how the headphones fit and seal.
Active noise cancellation is electronic
ANC headphones use microphones to sample surrounding sound, then electronics generate an opposing signal that reduces some of that sound. ANC does not replace the physical seal: consumer ANC headphones also rely on passive isolation, so fit contributes to the overall result. Bose describes the two approaches as complementary in its noise-canceling technology explainer; Sennheiser Hearing’s August 31, 2026 guide to noise cancellation also discusses fit and performance.
What kinds of noise does ANC reduce best?
ANC is generally more effective against steady, low-frequency sounds, such as the drone of an engine or air-conditioning. Voices, sharper sounds, and abrupt noises are harder to cancel, and some sound will remain. Performance varies by headphone model and fit; ANC should be understood as reducing noise, not erasing it.

For voices and other less predictable sounds, the physical seal still matters. A poor-fitting ear tip or ear cup can weaken passive isolation and may affect ANC performance. When choosing headphones, consider the fit and comfort you can sustain for the intended listening period, as well as the noise you want to reduce. If you use in-ear headphones, check that any replacement or alternative-size tips are compatible with your specific model.
Which type should you choose?

Do ANC headphones protect your hearing?
Do not treat ordinary ANC headphones or earbuds as hearing protection. NIOSH’s January 31, 2024, Provide Hearing Protection guidance says ANC “should not be considered hearing protection unless labeled with an NRR.” For hazardous noise, use protection suited to the exposure; NIOSH identifies earplugs, earmuffs, and canal caps as hearing-protector types.

NIOSH’s Understand Noise Exposure guidance sets an occupational recommended exposure limit of 85 dBA over an eight-hour shift. That is an occupational limit, not a universal safe listening threshold for headphone use. CDC’s hearing-loss prevention guidance recommends turning volume down, taking breaks from noise, avoiding loud situations where possible, and using adequate hearing protection when loud noise cannot be avoided.
