To stop unknown calls without missing every legitimate caller, start with your phone’s built-in screening or spam controls, then check your phone provider’s options. On iPhone, you can ask unsaved callers why they are calling or silence them; Google’s Phone app can identify and filter suspected spam. Review voicemail and filtered-call history, because these tools can also catch calls you want. A displayed name or number is not proof of who is calling.

What “No Caller ID” and “Unknown Caller” mean

These labels mean your phone is not showing usable caller identification. They do not prove the call is a scam. An unknown caller might be a legitimate person whose number is not in your contacts, or a caller whose identity is hidden. That is different from caller ID spoofing, in which a caller alters the name or number shown on your screen.

Spoofing can make a call appear to come from a local number, a familiar company, or a government agency. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers use these techniques, including local-looking “neighbor” numbers. Treat caller ID as a clue, not verification. FTC: How to Block Unwanted Calls

How to screen or silence unknown calls on iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Phone.
  2. Choose how calls from unsaved numbers should be handled. Depending on your software and region, options can include Never, Ask Reason for Calling, and Silence.
  3. Choose Ask Reason for Calling to have the caller provide information before your phone rings, or choose Silence to send the call to voicemail and keep it in call history.

Apple also documents an Unknown Callers list and a Spam control for calls a carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud. You can block a specific number from the Phone app. Check your call history and voicemail for calls you did not expect. If your menus look different, search within Phone settings; names and paths vary across software versions. Apple iPhone User Guide: Screen and block calls

Carrier services and landline blockers

Ask your mobile carrier or home-phone provider what call labeling, blocking, and screening features are available for your line. Depending on the service, calls may be labeled, stopped before ringing, screened, or sent to voicemail. Some services may be free and others may cost extra; availability depends on the provider and plan. Find out how to review filtered calls and restore a legitimate caller, since blocking can affect wanted calls too. FTC: How to Block Unwanted Calls

CPR V5000 Call Blocker for Landline Phones - You Can Manually Block All Calls with the Big Red Button - Pre-Programmed with 5,000 Known Nuisance Numbers - Caller ID is Required
  • COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
  • IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
  • Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
  • Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

If you have a traditional landline that does not use internet calling, a separate call-blocking device is another possible option. Depending on the device, it may use known scam-number lists, a list you manage, an approved-number list, voicemail routing, or a prompt for callers. Capabilities differ, and this is not a general recommendation for mobile or VoIP service. The FTC does not endorse a particular model. FTC: How to Block Unwanted Calls

How to handle a spoofed or repeat caller

  • Verify claims independently. If a caller claims to represent an organization, hang up and call a number from its official website, bill, or card—not a number supplied by the caller or displayed on screen.
  • Do not engage with suspected illegal robocalls. The FTC advises hanging up, not calling back, and not pressing a key in response to a prompt.
  • Report suspected illegal robocalls. You can report them to the FTC using its consumer guidance page.
  • Use the Do Not Call Registry with realistic expectations. It may reduce sales calls from legitimate companies that follow the law, but it does not stop scammers.

What caller ID authentication can—and cannot—do

STIR/SHAKEN is an industry caller-ID authentication framework. In a 2020 order, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) described provider obligations to implement it on IP network portions by June 30, 2021. The order also describes blocking as stopping calls before they ring, routing them to voicemail, or applying screening or interactive treatment. Authentication measures do not guarantee that every spoofed call is blocked or verify a caller’s identity to the person receiving the call. FCC 2020 order

Choose a filtering approach that fits your calls

Before enabling aggressive filtering or paying for a service, compare these practical points:

  • Compatibility: Does it work with your phone type, operating system, and region?
  • What it does: Does it label, screen, silence, block, or route calls to voicemail?
  • Recovery: Can you review false positives, retrieve voicemail, and unblock a caller?
  • Important callers: Can family, schools, medical offices, and other essential contacts reach you reliably?
  • Privacy: What caller information is shared, and with whom?
  • Cost: Is there a recurring service charge or a one-time device cost?
