NMDC is an iron-ore-led Navratna miner, but it is not directly comparable with every large public-sector mining company: MOIL is focused on manganese, NALCO is aluminium-linked, and Coal India mines coal and is classified as a Maharatna. Compare them by commodity exposure, operating results, dividend status and company-specific risks—not by the Navratna label alone or by per-share dividend amounts without a common share-price date.

Which companies make a useful comparison with NMDC?

NMDC’s FY 2024-25 annual report identifies it as a Navratna. The Ministry of Coal’s FY 2024-25 report identifies Coal India as a state-owned coal-mining enterprise and a Maharatna. Those classifications are not interchangeable, and the available government sources do not establish a current classification for every company discussed here. NALCO and MOIL are included as commodity and business-model comparators, not on an unverified claim that they share NMDC’s status.

The more useful question is what each company mines or processes, what results it reports for a clearly named financial year, and what its dividend announcement actually means. The figures below come from different reporting periods and measures, so they are reference points rather than a like-for-like performance ranking.

How do NMDC and the other miners differ?

Company Main exposure Reported operating or financial reference Dividend information in the cited material Classification established here
NMDC Primarily iron ore; also reports a 1.2 MTPA pellet plant at Donimalai and diamond mining at Panna. FY 2024-25: iron-ore production of 44.07 million tonnes, revenue of ₹23,668 crore and profit before tax of ₹9,296 crore. FY 2025-26: the company homepage reports production of 53.16 MT, sales of 50.24 MT, turnover of ₹31,554 crore and PBT of ₹10,155 crore. The company’s dividend index lists FY25 interim and final materials and FY26 interim material; a complete per-share timeline is not established by the cited figures. Navratna, as identified in NMDC’s FY 2024-25 annual report.
MOIL Manganese ore, with additional processed products including electrolytic manganese dioxide and ferro-manganese. FY 2024-25 manganese-ore production: 18.03 lakh tonnes, a record reported by the company. FY 2024-25 total dividend of ₹5.63 per share: ₹4.02 interim paid and ₹1.61 final recommended. Not stated in the cited FY25 annual report.
NALCO Integrated aluminium-linked business and mining exposure; it is not a direct iron-ore peer. FY 2025-26 company homepage: revenue from operations of ₹17,843 crore and net profit of ₹5,816 crore. FY 2024-25 final dividend of ₹2.50 per share recommended, subject to shareholder approval. Not stated in the cited FY25 annual report or homepage.
Coal India Coal mining; a useful large public-sector mining comparator, but a different commodity. Not stated in the cited Ministry of Coal FY 2024-25 report section used here. Not stated in the cited Ministry of Coal FY 2024-25 report section used here. Maharatna, as identified in the Ministry of Coal’s FY 2024-25 report.

NMDC figures for FY 2024-25 are from its FY 2024-25 annual report. Its FY 2025-26 production, sales, turnover and PBT are figures reported on the official homepage; they should not be treated as audited annual-report figures on that basis alone. MOIL’s production and dividend details are in its FY 2024-25 annual report. NALCO’s dividend recommendation is in its FY 2024-25 annual report; the FY 2025-26 figures are on its official homepage. Coal India’s classification and business description are in the Ministry of Coal FY 2024-25 report.

What NMDC’s production figures say—and do not say

NMDC’s reported iron-ore production rose from 44.07 million tonnes in FY 2024-25 to 53.16 MT in FY 2025-26, according to its annual report and homepage summary respectively. The homepage also reports FY26 sales of 50.24 MT, alongside turnover of ₹31,554 crore and PBT of ₹10,155 crore. Production and sales are different measures; turnover and PBT are financial measures. They should not be treated as substitutes for one another or as evidence of a per-tonne margin without more comparable data.

NMDC’s FY25 management discussion set a production target of 55.4 MT for FY26 and a longer-term target of 100 MT by 2030. Those were management goals, not achieved results. The homepage’s subsequent FY26 production figure of 53.16 MT is below the stated 55.4 MT target; the cited summary does not explain the variance. The same annual report describes three mechanized iron-ore mine complexes—Kirandul and Bacheli in Chhattisgarh and Donimalai in Karnataka—along with a 1.2 MTPA pellet plant at Donimalai and diamond mining at Panna. This gives NMDC some activity beyond raw iron ore, but the business remains principally iron-ore-led.

For investors, production growth alone does not answer whether expansion is translating into financial returns. Compare production with sales, revenue, profit, capital spending and project progress in the relevant filings. NMDC’s FY25 revenue and PBT are annual-report figures; its FY26 homepage summary is useful as a company-reported update, but it is not a replacement for the filed FY26 annual report.

Why the commodity mix matters

NMDC: iron ore

NMDC is the closest match for someone seeking an iron-ore-led miner among these examples. Its earnings and operations should be assessed in the context of iron-ore production and sales, mine operations, processing and the logistics needed to move output to customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MOIL: manganese and processed products

MOIL offers a narrower manganese exposure. Its FY25 annual report covers manganese ore as well as electrolytic manganese dioxide and ferro-manganese, so ore output is not a complete description of its product mix. Its reported 18.03 lakh tonnes is manganese-ore production, not a directly comparable measure of NMDC’s iron-ore output: the commodities, units and markets differ.

NALCO: aluminium-linked operations

NALCO is a broader aluminium-linked and mining comparator rather than an iron-ore peer. Its FY26 homepage figures—revenue from operations of ₹17,843 crore and net profit of ₹5,816 crore—use different financial measures from NMDC’s reported turnover and PBT. Do not rank those figures as if they were the same accounting line items.

Coal India: coal

Coal India is useful for a broad comparison of large public-sector mining businesses, but coal is a different commodity from iron ore. Its Maharatna classification also makes it a category mismatch if the comparison is read literally as a list only of Navratna companies.

How should you compare their dividends?

Keep the financial year and announcement status attached to every payout. MOIL’s FY 2024-25 report gives a total dividend of ₹5.63 per share, comprising an interim dividend of ₹4.02 that was paid and a final dividend of ₹1.61 that was recommended. NALCO’s FY 2024-25 report extract records a recommended final dividend of ₹2.50 per share, subject to shareholder approval. A recommendation is not the same as a payment already made.

NMDC’s investor index lists FY25 interim and final dividend materials, and FY26 interim material, but the cited information does not provide a complete per-share timeline. Check the relevant company filings for the declaration, approval and payment status before using an exact amount. The index is available on NMDC’s dividend documents page.

These per-share amounts do not establish which stock has the highest dividend yield. Yield requires a share price measured on a stated date and a comparable basis; dividend policy and face value can also differ. A one-year payout is not a promise of future dividends. Without a common-date price set and consistent payout data, a yield league table would be misleading.

What risks should an investor examine?

Commodity and business-model exposure

These companies are exposed to different commodities and product chains. An investor comparing them should identify what drives each business rather than assume that a rise or fall in one mineral market affects every company in the same way. The figures presented here are not a comparable measure of commodity-price sensitivity.

Production, projects and capital requirements

NMDC’s FY25 report sets out large expansion ambitions. Assess whether subsequent filings show progress in production, sales and project delivery, and consider the associated capital needs. Keep management targets separate from achieved throughput when evaluating execution.

Operating, permissions, logistics and environmental matters

Mining outcomes can depend on mine operations, permissions, logistics and environmental management. NMDC’s policy page publishes Enterprise Risk Management and Tailings Management policies. Their existence demonstrates that formal policy documents are available; it does not quantify exposure or prove how effectively a risk is controlled. Review current company disclosures rather than treating a policy list as a risk score.

Comparable, quantified risk disclosures for all four companies are not established by the figures above. For company-specific assessment, read the latest annual report and filings for operating, project, environmental and financial risks rather than assigning a ranking based on incomplete or mismatched data. NMDC’s policy documents are listed at its policies and documents page.

A practical way to decide which comparison fits

  1. Choose the exposure first. Decide whether you want iron ore, manganese, aluminium-linked operations or coal. These businesses are not interchangeable just because they are public-sector miners.
  2. Use matched reporting periods. Compare production with production and sales with sales for the same financial year. Keep company homepage summaries distinct from audited annual-report figures.
  3. Compare like financial measures. Revenue from operations, turnover, net profit and PBT are not equivalent metrics. Use the same line items and accounting period where filings allow.
  4. Read dividends by status. Separate interim amounts paid from final amounts recommended or approved, and use a common-date share price if calculating yield.
  5. Match risks to the company. Review current disclosures on projects, operations, permissions, logistics, environmental management and capital needs; do not infer a risk ranking from policy documents or targets alone.

There is no defensible single “best” stock comparison from these data alone. A useful decision depends on the commodity exposure sought, comparable filed results, dividend status, valuation on a defined date and the investor’s tolerance for company-specific risks.
