If you want to play the announced The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time release, buy a Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo lists the game as exclusive to that console, with a U.S. release date of November 5, 2026. If you already own an original Switch, you can still play compatible Switch games on Switch 2, including the original Tears of the Kingdom; its Switch 2 Edition adds features unavailable on the older console.
Do you need Switch 2 for the next Zelda?
For the announced Ocarina of Time, yes. Nintendo’s U.S. product listing gives a November 5, 2026 release date and identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo’s announcement also describes it as exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo’s product listing describes overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and updated controls; these are Nintendo’s descriptions, not independent test results. The listing estimates a 27 GB download and one-player, single-system play. Nintendo’s announcement

If you put a Switch 2 Edition game card into an original Switch, the older console plays the Switch version, not the Switch 2 Edition features. The Switch 2 Edition also does not include the Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC: that DLC is a separate purchase and requires the full game. Nintendo’s edition details and FAQ
Can you carry your Zelda saves to Switch 2?
Nintendo says save data from the Switch versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom can be carried over to their Switch 2 Editions. Nintendo’s FAQ also says those editions support cloud save data on Switch 2.
